opportunities and cultural relations. The British Council creates international
opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and builds trust between themworldwide.
We have been working with all types of schools through our various school programmes
for more than a decade. The British Council International School Award (ISA) is oneof our flagship school programmes whereby more than !"## schools across the country
have been successful. These schools range from the $rivate to Central and %tate
government sectors.
The British Council &nternational %chool ward (&%) is a benchmarking scheme that
accredits schools as having an outstanding level of support for*+ ,urturing global citi-enship in young people
+ nriching teaching and learning
&% is content free and gives a lot of fle/ibility to schools to introduce and embed
international dimension in their curriculum and gives conte/t to practice new skills in
&CT and pedagogy in a safe and structured manner.

Re.istration /rocess
To apply for &% the school needs to complete the &% registration form and the audit
template. The documents must be submitted to the local British Council office alongwith the registration fee through che7ue or demand draft drawn in favour of @British
CouncilA and payable at :elhi.

A//ointin. an ISA Coordinator
The &nternational %chool ward re7uires that every school applying for the ward has an
&% Coordinator who in most cases is one of the staff members. The success of the
school often hinges on the capability and commitment of the Coordinator to efficiently plan and effectively monitor the activities keep records and disseminate information.
4ollowing is the role specification for an &% Coordinator*

Role o$ an ISA coordinator
The International Di%ension Co,ordinator should /ro%ote International
Awareness throu.hout the school# the wider school co%%unit4 and the local

This can be achieved by*
• rranging international activities within the school.
• &nviting visitors from other countries into school.
• &nitiating C;U,&CT&;, links with other schools in the UK and abroad.• 8eporting to staff and governors as appropriate.
• $roviding articles about recent international work for the school maga-ine.
• &nforming the local media of international events taking place in the school.
The role o$ the International Coordinator6
• To have overall responsibility for successfully applying for the &nternational %chool
ward.
• To be responsible for conducting an annual audit outlining the schools action plan for
developing an &nternational :imension.• To contribute towards a school policy statement on the &nternational :imension.
• To develop an &nternational dimension throughout the school by helping colleagues
develop cross+curricular proGects within each year group.
• To help the school celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage and ethnic diversity
within the school through the assemblies international days>weeks etc.
• To plan for the &nternational :imension by liaising with all staff.
• To regularly evaluate the impact of international activities.
• To develop and maintain resources to promote the &nternational :imension.
• To develop monitor and support global school links and e/changes.

Assess%ent o$ the action /lan
There are two cycles for the assessment of the ction $lan H pril to arch and
%eptember to ugust. The completed ction $lan must be submitted to the British
Council latest by ! 4ebruary for pril to arch cycle or by ! ugust for %eptember tougust cycle. panel of at least two assessors will assess the ction $lan. &n case of a
conflict of opinion a third assessor may be asked to review the plan.
There can be three results of the assessment process*
!. The ction $lan is approved.
0. The ction $lan re7uires to be reviewed and modified as per recommendations provided.". The ction $lan is reGected and needs to be redrafted after attending another ction $lan
Workshop or a face+to+face meeting. Two repeated reGections will result in cancellation of
the registration.
$lease note that ?#+6# per cent of the ction $lans receive recommendations to review
and modify. The assessors place a lot of emphasis on ction $lan assessment to ensure
that the planned activity meets the learning outcomes and the $ortfolio is successful.
Su//ort $or schools that a//l4 $or ISA
&% is a new learning e/perience and it is normal for schools to re7uire assistance and
guidance along the way. British Council offers ongoing advice and support to schools
through face+to+face interactions and online platform.

The British Council %chools ;nline website offers support to schools not only for &%
but also for all other school proGects. 4ollowing key features of the website are especially
useful for schools working towards the &%*

Besides these schools may seek appointment with a British Council staff to clarify
doubts and view $ortfolios. Iou can also get assistance from a British Council %choolmbassador (BC%) an e/perienced school teacher or $rincipal who has volunteered to
assist new &% aspirants. The BC%s receive training and input from the British Council
and are well+e7uipped to give high 7uality advice. &f you have any difficulty incontacting the BC%s do get in touch with your local British Council office or write to
us at connecting.classroomsDin.britishcouncil.org and we will find a BC% to help you.
Javing gone through the grind we now see the &% as a kaleidoscopic programme thatfacilitates understanding of international educational and cultural practices and fosters
camaraderie between nations. The e/perience of this incredible Gourney has already
prompted us to go beyond our known level of innovation and e/perimentation in the fieldof education and groom our teachers and students into global mentors and pupils.

The key to a successful $ortfolio is a good ction $lan (section " in the application form)
and that is why it is necessary to invest time and thought in ction $lanning. Upon
registration the British Council will invite you to a ction $lanning Workshop whereyou will receive inputs on how to plan your school activities to re7uired standards.

The ction $lanning Workshop includes the following sessions*
• n understanding of the &% process.
• 4amiliarisation with the application form especially ction $lan template and guidance
notes.
• Understanding the &% assessment criteria and standards.
• mbedding a global dimension in the curriculum.
• 4amiliarisation with online resources and support available.
The ction $lanning Workshop is designed to be participatory and interactive and is
delivered by either British Council staff or British Council appointed facilitators.Usually an &% Coordinator of an accredited school is invited to share first+hand
e/perience and clarify doubts.
0ho should attend
The $rincipal and the &% Coordinator should attend the workshop. &f it is not possible
for the $rincipal to attend a senior member of staff or the Coordination Committee
member should accompany the &% Coordinator to develop a clear and sharedunderstanding of the re7uirements which may have to be cascaded to others within the
school.

ll evidence must be presented on 5 sheets of paper and fitted into a single ring binder file. The sections should be clearly demarcated using section dividers. The ring binder
file should not be stuffed with material and must be able to withstand repeated handling
without falling apart. &f this happens an important section may get lost in the process and
the pages may be too mi/ed up for the assessors to be able to assess effectively.
