ISLANDER 6-17-65

WARTIME ON SANIBFby ethel sn>

Life on Sanibel Island dur-ing the war years was verydifferent from the free un-restricted ways of living inpeace years. There were notso many of us and there wasa group of soldiers quarteredin the large beach houses westof Casa Ybel, At night therewas a patrol of two men whowalked the beach from the lighthouse to the bridge every twohours. Charlotta Matthews atIsland Inn set aside a sectionin one of the large refriger-ators in the. Inn kitchen forthe men on the patrol and itw a s filled with sandwiches, cookies, milk and cold drinks, and all sorts of goodies forhungry soldiers. The Inn wasnever locked and they gratefullycame in at all hours and helpedthemselves. We all contributedhut the Inn supplied the most.

We residents had to go toa r m y headquarters in F o r tMyers and be photographed, finger printed, and identified.Fj)ouglas Clapp and I went to -gether for the ordeal. We bothlooked like we belonged to theRouge's Gallery by the time"/ c got photogr aph ed. Everybeach cottage had to cover everywindow facing the Gulf withblack so that not a glimmer oflight showed up. There werekerosene lamps in those daysso it was not so difficult toshut out the light.

We had some kind of a partyfor the boys one afternoon eachweek at the Community House. The younger girls danced, the

music was from the Victrola. We played cards, and all sortsof games. There were someserious conversations. Life onSanibel was quite a change forthose young men that were usedto being at home or in a city.Of c o u r s e the refreshmentsw e r e always enthusiasticallyreceived and they were variedand ample.

Charlotta Matthews was thehead of our war effort on theIsland and she reported everyIncident to the lighthouse orBailey's S to re . Both of theseplaces had direct contacts onthe mainland. There were manyinteresting incidents but themost exciting of all happenedto me.

One evening when it was justgetting dark I had driven home, had put the car in the garage andtook the cocker, Dolly Varden, down to the beach to see thelast rosy glow from the sunset. It was almost dark and Iwas looking west at the lastfaint l igh t . Suddenly andwithout any sound, I saw an oilbarge blow up. Tugs were con-stantly towing strings of oilbarges in the waters off San-ibel. Several times we had seenperiscopes of German sub-marines come to the surfaceoff shore. Close in too. Butnothing had ever happened. Butthis time it had happened in abig way! Almost stunned I couldhardly think! But at once Irealized that I should report toCharlotte and she would get in

touch with the Army post. SoI got my car out and drovequickly to the Inn and toldCharlotta that I had s^en a

German submarine blow up anoil tanker on the horizon beyond. It was dark by that time andthere was nothing apparent nowin that direction. Since my carwas there, at the Rocks, andthe m o t o r going, Charlottaasked me to go and report.Douglas Clapp went with me andI never got to the lighthouseas quickly as that trip. I shoutedto the soldier who came rushingdown the lighthouse stairs. Hehad a telescope and went backup and we drove home.

We found out when we gotback that right after we hadgone the whole barge burst intofire and floated past the Inn.It was still a terrific fire whenit reached the lighthouse. Wenever heard anything about it,but of course to blow up anddestroy the oil barges was atall times an objective of theGermans.

So living on an Island out-post during the war was ex-citing and there was never adull monent!

RIP VAN WINKLEby carol nix

Recently the members of thefifth and sixth grade class inthe Sanibel Elementary Schoolgave a play to the first, second, third and fourth grades.

It was a version of RipVan Winkle after his slumber, written by Becky Miller. JanetWooster starred as Rip VanWinkle and Carol Nix was hiswife Sip Van Winkle, JeanneWooster was Bessy VanWinkle, Kitty Gesser was SusanVan Winkle and Roger Carlinstarred as Junior Van Winkle.Bonnie Brown was the Queenand Donna Wiles the King,Jeanne Wooster was also WitchHazel the J4th, Joan Millerwas the witch's stolen daughter.Minx. Becky Miller played therole of Granny, the witch'smother and was also narrator. The Winkle family was quite asight to behold with patches, rips, holes, and soot coveringtheir clothes. Rip Van Winkleand Junior were supposed tobe very stupid.

The play turned out to bequite a comedy and everybodyenjoyed it thoroughly.

ON BUILDINGBIGGER BIRD BATHS

Noted the new and largerbird bath in front of PriscillaMurphy's office and learnedthat it was not a terrific in-flux of additional featheredfriends but the size of theregular visitors who may beobserved about five o'clockevery evening cavorting there,A mother hawk and her youngone come regularly to bathe. We are sure it is a motherhawk because the young onesits and watches her and everso often screams "Ma." Themother hawk was so violentwith her ablutions that sheknocked over the original bathand broke it so the new oneIs set four inches in the groundand Is cemented together towithstand her onslaughts. Birdlovers might like to stop byand invade her privacy—doesn't seem to perturb herin the least.

The line tightened slowlyas the big fish started to moveaway from the ship, I suddenlynoticed Gerald was trying toget a turn of the line aroundhis arm, I knew what that wouldmean. I made a mad dash overto Mm hollering excitedly forhim to let go of the line, burwe were both too late, for bynow the fish must have feltthe sting of the shatp hook,

and with his over sized tail slap-ped the water in an enormous-.plash that completely coveredus both with a shower of spray. The line parted as if it werea 10 pound thread, Geraldtumbled backward taking mealong in his fall, that landedus in the dishpan full of dirtydishes that he had neglected;o wash after supper. The noisewas devastating as the dishesflew in an directions and be-

fore the echo had died away,Bill came running upon deck, clad only in his shorts. "Whatin tarnation are you two damfools up to?" He angrily asked."I thought we had struck amine or something."

After picking ourselves upfrom the deck amongst thebroken dishes, we explainedabout the monster that hadcaused the accident. "Well justdon't stand there and look stu-pid, get a heavier line and achain,, we will tie it to the winchand I will show you how to getthe son-of-a-gun."

In a flash Gerald was backwith another line and a freshbait. The line at ready, weall watched intensely as the"Thing" moved in again."Heave hot let er go" hol-lered Bill at the top of hisvoices as he swung the stoutmanila rope with the chain overhis head, sending it over theshadow.

Excitement mounted againas we watched the dark shadowcome gliding in to the bait.As before, it hesitated whileinspecting the bait, then madeanother turn around the"Ranger," Once again he movedtoward the lure,, .for a splitsecond he stood over the four-five pound of Grouper.. .thenhe grabbed it.;.The issuingshower that followed his de-parture left the three of uss t a n d i n g open-mouthed andsoaking wet. With a two footof one inch manila danglingi'rom the rigging, the mast ofthe "Ranger" shook like somegiant hand had bent it to thewater and then let go again.

Gerald and I wanted t.o tryit again with still heavier rope, but Rill said "No UKO, it won'tbe back," ile was right, al-though we looked for him forquite sometime, he never didreappear.

"Bill, what kind of a monsterdo you think it was?" I asked,"Oh that! That was a smallHammerhead^ We used themfor bait when we fished forBIG fish in Haiti," he saidas he went back to his in-terrupted sleep.
