OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm — Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading — I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel — The people said: “Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?” (Mark 6:1-6). Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018
I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. — 2 Corinthians 12:9
(Marcos 6:1-6). Every summer people go on vacation to take a break from life. Some people go far and crazy places while others stay local or even have a staycation. Sometimes we even need a vacation from our vacation depending on what we do. We do this to take a step back and recharge in life. We also need to do this with our faith. We don’t take a vacation from our faith but rather go on a retreat recharge, and recenter. As we continue to fundraise for our City of Saints conference, I look forward to this weekend with our teens to recharge, reenter, and rejuvenate ourselves, but we are still a ways from our goal. We thank you all for your continued support and we ask that you continue supporting us and help us fundraise so that this weekend can become a reality for our teens. Jesse Romero popular Catholic Radio host, Apologist and full-time bilingual Catholic Lay Evangelist is nationally
acclaimed for his dynamic, upbeat Christ centered preaching. A Retired Veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, he was a three time World Police boxing champion and a two time U. S. A. Kickboxing champion. During his years as a Deputy Sheriff, Jesse experienced the dark side of society every day; yet he also saw the evidence of God’s work in some of the most unexpected places. Jesse has the ability to make the sometimes-complex teachings of our Faith understandable with his straight talk approach. His messages are down-to-earth, orthodox and delivered with energy and conviction that our Catholic Faith is something to be worn visibly and proudly, not kept hidden away. Seeking Union with God O Seekers, remember, all distances are traversed by those who yearn to be near the Source of their being! Mysticism is all about Experience, the Experience of Union with God. It means to “Open one’s mind, and to enter into the Mystery which is God. The creation tradition understands Mysticism primarily as our entering the fullness of the mystery of our existence, the gift and blessing of creation itself. The mysterious universe we enter includes the universe of our minds and imaginations, memories and bodies as well as the mysteries of the cosmos itself. but given the wounds of the human condition, to enter these mysteries as fully as possible some letting go is needed, some returning to a space of emptiness and openness and primal ability to wonder. Thomas Merton believed that Mysticism is simply Union with God, and that the path to this Union is opened primarily by Grace and Prayer. We will use Contemplative Dialogue for our sharing, and always have a set time for Contemplation; helping us to become more mindful and prayerful.
We will meet at San Buenaventura Mission on two Saturdays per month starting July 28th at 10am. Please call Anne Vanoni 805 672-0920
