Is Society Charting an Unsustainable

Course With Technology?

A presentation by The Eagles (Team #3)

Alec’s Goals

•Personal life: To live a fun, healthy life

and be a good person

•Social Life: Have a great group of friends

and family

•Material Life: Own a house and live the

American Dream.

•Work/Occupation: Work for PennDOT or

have my own Civil Engineering firm.

•Recreational: Be able to enjoy the

outdoors

Technology and Pollution

•Industrial technology causes massive amounts of

pollution

•It affects over 100 million people; comparable to

malaria and HIV

•The U.S. alone produces 30% of the worlds waste,

and uses 25% of the Earth’s resources.

•14 BILLION pounds of garbage (Mostly plastic) is

dumped into the ocean every year.

•Approximately 46% of the lakes in America cannot

support life due to pollution.

•Due to pollution, and this evidence, eventually

Human life will also be unsupportable by the Earthhttp://www.dosomething.org/tipsandtools/11-facts-about-pollution

•Personal: Pollution can cause sickness, making an

enjoyable life difficult.

•Social: Much like personal life, pollution can affect

your social life with sickness and even death.

•Material: Due to companies trying to reduce their

emissions, as well as improved technology, your

material life will become more expensive.

•Work: As a civil engineer, pollution could cause new

obstacles to overcome when designing things such as

problems arising from soil pollution.

•Recreational: Since almost 46% of the lakes in the U.S.

are uninhabitable by fish, I could not enjoy fishing

there.

How pollution will affect our goals

Russ’s Goals

● Personal/State of mind: To live a successful life

and be a good person

● Social Life: Continue to stay close with family and

friends

● Materials: To have a big home

● Work/Occupation: To have a job through

engineering and to hopefully enjoy it

● Recreation/avocation: staying active, vacationing

● Political: Don’t care much about politics

Overpopulation

•Population of more than 7 billion people here on earth

o1967: 3 billion people

● Average of 135 million people born per year compared to a 55

million death rate per year

● Due to overpopulation, resources and energy are rapidly used

creating scarcity

● Technological advances saving more and more human’s lives

● Natural resources are being used up

● Climate changing due to our growth

○ Pollution

produced yearly.

- Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil producer, has been laying

about its outputs capacity for at least the last decade.

Technology and Health

Is it really helping?

Technology and Health

A few facts

Hearing loss- although preventable, does happen when earbuds or headphones

are played too loud

Obesity- Increased amount of watching TV and playing on the computer has

been connected to an increase in weight gain

Cancer- Courts ruled in Italy that a man developed a brain tumor because of his

constant phone use while working

Michaela’s Goals

What I find important:

State of mind: Stay positive and optimistic

Social Life: Try to develop a bigger circle of friends

Material life: Own an HEV

Work: In a world wide company

Recreation: Be able to play every instrument/ compose music

Political Life: Vote every year

Based on our findings and

research, we feel that

technology IS reaching an

unsustainable level.
