description

A first Lesson for Year 8 students in Religious Studies teaching them about Islamic State and giving them feedback on assessments. The lesson is designed to introduce them to new vocabulary, help them to know and understand what is happening in the news and develop some maturity using empathy. The message is bleak and probably the most striking thing that really works is the faces of the young Yazidi children aboard an american helicopter with soldiers shooting at the terrorists on the ground. Even the most recalcitrant 'naughty' boys paid full attention and realised the significance of what they were being taught! One word of warning - this lesson needs to be framed with a message that Islam is not to blame and it is the hijacking of religious themes that, once again, is what is at route of the evil occurring in our time ...
