Reduction in white board bus services affects commutersSir, MTC nowadays is operating more deluxe buses on all routes. The

number of white board buses has been reduced drastically. The faresof the deluxe buses are much higher compared to the white board(ordinary fare) MTC buses. When first introduced, deluxe buses offeredbenefits like ‘limited stoppage service’ or ‘point to point service’ withlower transit time for a higher fare. But nowadays, as the white boardservice has been reduced, the deluxe service is operated like whiteboard service by halting at all stops, albeit at a much higher fare. So,in a way, MTC has increased the basic fare through an unfair practice.Daily wage workers and other poor commuters are badly affected bythe higher fares. If MTC has a case to hike the fare to maintain itseconomic viability, it or the govt. can do it straightaway. Even then,a reasonable ratio of services of white, green and deluxe types mustbe adopted so that commuters belonging to poor and middle classsections are not affected. K. Muthiah, C-18, R. K. Road blocks in trial run for pedestrian plazaSir, In November last year, the first trial run of the ‘Pondy Bazaar

Pedestrian Plaza’ was carried out without informing residents, shop-pers and shopkeepers. Now a second trial is to be held on Saturday, Feb.11. When the trial was first conducted, most shops downed shuttersas a mark of protest against the proposed plaza as they felt it wouldaffect their business. Though a number of residents participated andthe Corporation later announced the trial as successful, there are anumber of issues that should have been studied before the next trialwas conducted. Since no vehicles are allowed to enter Pondy Bazaarduring the trial, there are difficulties like access to banks, post-office,PDS shops and water supply through tankers to residences and shopsin Pondy Bazaar and its side roads. The surrounding roads like SrinivasaRoad, Sivagnanam Road, Raja Street, Muthukrishnan Street,Thanikachalam Road and Dr. Nair Road get choked by parking ofvehicles putting the local residents to lots of hardship. Appeal for speed breaker on Natesan StreetSir, We are regular readers of Mambalam Times. After civic issues

are reported in your paper, the authorities concerned take quick actionto resolve the same. In this regard, there is a problem in NatesanStreet, T. Nagar which is off South Usman Road. Vehicles are beingdriven through the street at high speed ever since the road was re-laidwith a concrete surface. The vehicles do not stop or give way forpedestrians waiting to cross the road. Recently, a pedestrian crossingthe road was knocked down by a speeding 2-wheeler and sufferedbleeding injuries. Speed breakers are a must on the street to slow downvehicles. I appeal to Chennai Corporation officials to immediatelyinstall speed breakers at the junctions of Natesan Street with GuildStreet and South Usman Road to slow down vehicles. M. A. MTC crew not wearing name badgesSir, MTC has made it compulsory to produce identity proof for buying

and using the Rs. 50 1-day all-route ticket. But noticed that the buscrew do not wear their name badges though it is mandatory as per MTCrules. I met and submitted a letter in this regard to a high official of MTCon Jan. 4. On Jan. 11, I received a letter signed by the Joint ManagingDirector, MTC that instructions have been given to drivers andconductors through official circulars to always wear name badgeswhile on duty.
