Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR
PHOSALONE DUSTING POWDERS
o. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institutionon 30 June 1977, after the draft finalized by the Pest Control SectionalCommittee had been approved by the Agricultural and Food ProductsDivision Council and the Chemical Division Council.
0.2 Phosalone dusting powder formulations are used in the control ofinsect pests and mites of agricultural crops.
0.3 Phosalone dusting powder formulations are generally manufacturedto contain 4 percent ( "./m) of phosalone.
0.4 In the preparation of this standard, due consideration has been givento the provisions of the Insecticides Act, 1968 and the Rules framedthereunder. However, this standard is subject to the restrictions imposedunder these, wherever applicable.
0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement ofthis standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS: 2-1960·. The number of significant placesretained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of thespecified value in this standard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of sampling and test for phosalone dusting powders.
2. REQ,UIREMENTS
2.1 Deac:rlptloll - The material shall be in the form of a powder. Itshall be free ftowing and devoid of lumps. Phosalone, technical used inits manufacture shall have been uniformly mixed in suitable fillers, suchas talc or pyrophyillite. The material, when dusted from a hand rotaryduster, shall issue freely without clogging or bridging.
*Ru1es for rounding off numerical values ( "m"d).
3
IS : 8489 • 1977
2.1.1 Phosalonc, technical employed in the manufacture of dustingpowder formulations shall conform to IS : 8488-1977*.
2.2 The material shall also comply with the requirements liven inTable 1.
2.3 Pho8aloDe CODteat - When determined by the method prescribedin Appendix A of IS : 8488-1977*, the observed phosalone content, percentby mass of any of the samples shall not differ from the declared nominalvalue by more than percent tolerance as indicated below:

2.3.1 The actual value of the phosalonc content in the formulationshall be calculated to the second decimal place and then rounded nfT tufirst decimal place before applying the tolerances as stipulated in 2.3.
3. PACKING AND MARKING
3.1 PacklDg - The material shall be packed in clean and dry containersmade of mild steel, or tin plate or fibre board or double hessian jute bags(see IS: 8115-1976t) or DW tarpaulin laminated jute bags (see IS: 81171976): or HDPE woven sacks (see IS: 8069-1976§ ). The containersshall also comply with general requirements as stipulated in 2 of IS: 8190( Part I )-197611.
!.2 Marldag - The containers shall bear legibJy and indelibly thefollowing information and any other additional information as is necessaryunder the Insecticides Act and Rules:

4.1 Representative samples of the material shall be drawn as prescribedin cIndian Standard Method (or sampling of pesticides and theirformulations' ( under preparation).
NOTB - Till such time the standard under preparation is published, the matter.ball be as agreed to between the concerned parties.
5. TESTS5.1 Tests shall be carried out by the methods as specified in col 4 and 5aCTable I.
5.1.1 For gas chromatographic test for determination of phosalonecontent, start with 4 g of sample and 0·05 to 0°07 g of internal standardin 5 ml of diethy lether, and take 0·15 to 0·17 g of standard and 0·05 to0·07 g of internal standard for standard solution.
5.1.2 For spectrophotometric determination of the phosalone content, start with an accurately weighed sample of204 to 2°6 g in 100-ml beaker.Add 30 ml of diethylether, agitate for five minutes and filter the supernatant liquid through a sintered glass funnel ( porosity No.4) andcollect the filtrate in a 250-ml beaker. Repeat the extractions ofphosalone from the sediment left in the 100-ml beaker using 30 ml ofdiethylether and filter the same through the sintered glass funnel.Continue extraction three times in the above manner. Combine theextract in 250-ml beaker and evaporate off the ether in a current of dryair. Dissolve the residue in absolute alcohol and make up the volumeto 250-ml in a volumetric ftask and proceed.
5.2 Q,aaUty 0' Re_leat. - Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicalsand distilled water ( see IS : 1070.1977*) shall be employed in tests.
