Automotive Basic Standards Sectional Committee, TE 1

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Automotive Basic Standards Sectional Committee had been approved by the Transport Engineering Divisional Cquncil.

This Indian Standard aims for providing a clear visibility of registration plate when mounted on a motor vehicle.

This standard is in line with Safety Standard ( SS-22 ) - Rear registration plate, issued by The Automotive Research Association of India ( ARAI ) and CMVR requirements as amended in March 1993.

The committee responsible for the preparation of this standard is given in Annex A.

In reporting the results of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 (Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised )‘.

AUTOMOTIVE VEHICLES - REGISTRATION PLATE - REQUIREMENTS

1 SCOPE

This standard specifies requirements such as location, shape and dimensions of letters and numerals for mounting and fixing of registration plates on motor vehicles. This standard applies to passenger cars and commercial vehicles and their trailers and motor cycles, scooters and three wheelers.

1.1 Where ever this standard refers to the registration plate, it also covers the plain surface of the vehicle, where the registration mark is intended to be accommodated, irrespec- tive of the fact whether a separate plate is used or not.

2 REQUIREMENTS

2.1 The recommended shape, dimensions of the letters and numerals of the registration plate shall be as follows:

2.1.1 The shape for mounting shall comprise an even or virtually even rectangular surface.

2.1.2 Form and manner of display of registration mark on the motor vehicles shall be at both, the front and the rear on all motor vehicles clearly and legibly on plain surface of a plate or part of the vehicle, at the front facing direct to the front and at rear facing direct to the rear. In case of motorcycles the registration mark in the front shall be displayed parallel to the handlebar or on any part of the vehicle inclu- ding mudguard facing the front instead of on a plate in line with axis of the vehicle.

2.1.2.1 The registration mark shall be exhibited in two lines, the state code and registering authority code forming the first line and the rest forming the second line, one below the other. For the vehicles not having sufficient provision at the rear to exibit the registration mark in two lines, the exhibition of registration mark in single line is permissible.

2.1.2.2 The dimensions of letters and figures of the registration mark, space between different letters and numerals and space between letters and edge of the plain surface of the plate shall be as given in Table 1.

2.1.3 The space for mounting need not be wholly solid. It may consist of a bracket or

brackets which shall accept suitable size plate and which shall comply with the relevant requiremets.

2.1.4 In case a suitable location for incorpora- ting the registration number and letters is available, on the vehicle body itself, separate registration plate is not necessary.

2.2 Location of the Space for Display of Regis- tration Mark or the Space for Mounting and Fixing of Plate

The space for display of registration mark or the space for mounting shall be such that after correct fixing, the plate shall have the following characteristics.

2.2.1 Position of the Plate with Respect to the Longitudinal Axis of the Vehicle

The plate shall be affixed to the rear of the vehicle such that the centre point of the plane is situated on the centre or the right of the longitudinal plate of symmetry of the vehicle. The right hand edge of the plate shall not be projecting beyond the vertical plane which is parallel to the longitudinal plane or symmetry and touching the extreme outer edge of the rear of the vehicle.

2.2.2 Position of the Plate in Relation to the Longitudinal Median Plane of the Vehicle

The plate shall be perpendicular or practically perpendicular, to the longitudinal median plane of the vehicle.

2.2.3 Position of the Plate in Relation to the Vertical Plane

The plate shall be vertical subject to a tolerance of f 50, where the shape of the vehicle so requires. However, it may be inclined to the vertical:

i) at not more than 30” when the surface bearing the registration number faces upwards, provided that the height of the upper edge of the plate is not more than one meter from the ground.

ii) at not more than 15” when the surface bearing the registration number faces downwards, provided that the height of the upper edge is not more than one meter from the ground.

The.height of the lower edge of the plate from the ground shall not be lower than the centre line of the wheel; the height of the upper edge of the plate from the ground shall not be more than 3 m.

2.2.5 Position of the Plate for Trailers

The plane touching the upper edge of that area and forming an angle measured upwards of 15” with the horizontal; and

The horizontal plane through the lower edge of that area ( however, if the height of the upper edge of the plate from the ground is greater than one meter, this later plane shall form an angle measured downwards of 15” with the horizontal ).

2.2.5.1 The registration mark of a trailers shall be exhibited on a plane plate or surface on the right hand side of the trailer.

2.2.6 Geometrical Requirements for VisibiIity

2.2.6.1 The area intended for display of the registration mark shall be visible in the whole space included within the following four planes.

a) The two vertical planes touching the two lateral edges of that area and forming an angle measured outwards of 30” with the longitudinal median of the vehicle,

2.2.6.2 For clear visibility of the area intended for display of registration mark, any objects like rear number plate lamps, dicky handle, shall not fall within the space generated by the four planes referred in 2.2.6.1.

2.3 Determination of Position, Height from the Ground and Geometrical Requirements for Visibi- lity of the Plate

The parameters given in 2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.2.5 and 2.2.6 shall be measured keeping the vehicle on a level floor in unladen condition.
