2. "RBQ,tJIREMENTS", .

2.1 Geaenl- Corn flakes shall bf:\ prt'pared from cleaned;' sound corn«'11 mays). The corn shall be scoured, degermed, dehulled and poli­shed, and then cooked after mixinR with malt, sugar and salt, follo,v~dby flaking, partial drying and finally to toasting..

2.2 D..eriptioa - Corn flakes shall be tender and crisp, rca~onahlyuniform in ize, of good flavour and golden brown in colour. Corn fla­kes shall. possess good characteristic taste and odour and shall be freefrom rancid, musty, sour and other undesirable tastes or odour~. Theflakes shall be free from living insects and moulds and shall' be free fromdead ins-eets, insect fragments and rodent contamination visible to theeye (corrected, if necessary for abnormal vision) with the aid of a ~uit-

able magnificatiC?n (not exceeding X 10). .

NOTE - Thp appearance. ta~h' and noonr "hall bE' determined by sensory evalu­ation tests.

2.2.1 Not lnore than 8 percent by mass of the material shall passthrough 2·0o-mm IS Sieve (.ret IS: 460-1962* ).

2.3 Barichmeats - Corn flake~ may be enriched by the addition ofvitamin~ and ·mineral~.

2.4 Corn flakes shall also conform to the requirements given in Table 1.

3. PACKING AND MARKING

3.1 PacklDl-Corn flakes !;hall ht' packed ih high dcn~ity polyethylenebags alone or first paC"kcd in hi~h density pnl\"f:lthylene baA'S, prop~rJysealed and then placed in cardhoard carton~. the packages shall b(\ ofsuch sizes as agreed to het\v~en th~ purchas('r and the vendor.

3.1.1 The bags USt~d for packing corn flakes shall be made of 300 gauKchigh density polyethylE'ne of thickness 0·075 mm.

3.2 Marldag - Each rontainrr shall be suitably marked so as to g-ive thefollowing information:

a) Name of the material;b) Ifenriched with vitamins (I) the word' vitaminized' placed in

brackets, below (a), and (2) the d~tails of enrichnlcnt;c) Name of the manufacturrr;d) Batch or code number; and.~) Net weight.

3.2.1 Each containf't· may also he marked "'ith the lSI Certification~ark. ·

NOTB - The use of the lSI Certification Mark is governed by the prcvj~jon9of theIndian Standards Institution (Cert.ification Marks) Act and the I{ules and Regu-.lations made thereunder. The lSI f\1al'k on products covered by an Indian Standardconvt'y. the assuranC(' that they ha\'e been produced to comply \vith..the requiremenuof that standard under a well-defined system ofinspection , testing and quality controlwhich is devised and supervised by lSI and operated by the produc('r. lSI markedproducts are also contin,uously checked by lSI for confofrnity to the standard a. afurther safeguard. 4. SAMPLING

4.1 Representative sanlfle~ of the material for testing conformity to thisstandard shall be dr.wn according to the method prescribed inAppendix F.

5. TESTS

5.I'Tests shall be carried out as prescribed under 2.2, the appropriateappendices specified in col 4 of Table 1 and in 3.1.

DETERMINATION OF MOISTURE

A-l. PROCEDURE

A-I.l Grind in a pestle and mortar about 50 g of the material su thatat leut 90 ~cent passes through 425-micron IS Sieve. Weigh accu­rately about 5 ~ oftbe prepared sample in a suitable moisture dish, madeof ~rcelain, silica or platinum, previously dried in an electric oven andwelghed. Plac~ the dish in an electric oven maintained at 105:!: 1°C for5 hours. Cool the dish in a desiccator and weigh with the lid on.Repeat the process of heating, cooling and weighing at half-hour inter­vals until the loss in mass between two successive weighing! is less thanone milligram_ Record the lowest mass obtained.

8-1.4 CoDe_trate. Mitne Acid Soladoa-4: 1. To 100 ml ofwater,add 400 ml ofconcentrated nitric acid (sp gr 1-42). Bring the contentsto boiling until colourless solution is obtained.

B-2.PROCEDVRE

8-2.1 PreparatloD or Sample- Grind in a pestle and mortar about 50 gof the material so that" at least 90 percent passes through 425-micronIS Sieve. Transfet" this prepared sample to a well-stoppered glass bottlefor subsequent use.

8-2.2 Ignite the dried material (~'~e B-2.1) in t~e dish over a Mekerburner for about 1 hOUT. Complete the ignition by keeping in a mufflefurnace at 600 ::i: 20°C until "grey ash results. Cool in a desiccator andweigh. Heat and dish again in the muffle furnace at 600 :I: 20°0 for30 minutes and cool in the desiccator. Repeat this process of heating,cooling and weighing untif the difference between two successiveweighings is le~s than one mHligram. Note the lowest mass.

8-2.2.1 Dissolve the a~h in 25 ml of the dilute nitric acid solution( 1:9). Filter through "Whatman filter paper No.1 or its equivalent,collecting"the filtrate in a lOO-ml graduated flask, and wash the contentsthoroughly with hot wat~r. Make the volume to 100 mI.

8-2.2.2 To a 25-ml aliquot of the filtrate, add excess of the standardsilver nitrate solution (~ nll). stirring well to flocculate the precipitateof silver chloride. Filte~ and wash the precipitate thoroughly with water.To the combined filtrate, add 5 rol of each of the ferric alum ii\dicatorsolution and concentratE$! nitric acid solution (4: 1). Titrate th, excessof silver nitrat~ with th~ standard ammonium thiocyanate solutjf)n to astable light brown colou~"end point. ' "

0-2. PROCEDURE

C-2.1 Weigh accurately about 5 g of the prepared sample in a suitabledish made of porcelain, silica or platinum previously dried in an electricoven and weighed. Ignite the material over a Meker burner for about1 hour. Complete the ignition by keefiog in a muffle furnace at600 :I: 20°C until grey ash results. Coo in a desiccator and weigh.Heat again in the muffle furnace at 600 :I: 20°C for half an hour and coolin the desiccator and weigh. Repeat this process of heating, forSO min~tes, cooling and weighing till the difference in weight betweentwo successive weighings is less than one milligram.

Transfer the whole of the boiling acid to 'the flask contain­ing·the fat-free Jtlaterjal and immediately 'connect the flask with a water­cooled reflux conden'ier and heat, so that the contents of the flask begin toboil'within 1 minute. Rotate the flask frequently, taking care to keep thematerial from remaining on the sides of the .flask out of contact with theacid. Continue boiling for exactly 30 minutes. Remove the flask and

. filter through fine linen (abol1t 18 threads to the centimetre) held in afunnel, and wash with boiling water until the washings are no longeracid to litmus. Bring some quantity of. sodium hydroxide solution toboiling under reflux condenser. Wash the residue on the linen into theflask with 200ml of the boiling sodium hydroxide solution. Immediatelyconnect the flask with the reflux condenser and boil for exactly30 minutes.. Remove the ~ask and immediately filter through thefiltering cloth. Thoroughly wash the residue' with boiling water andtransfer to a Gooeh crucible prepared with a thin but compact layer ofignited a,besto·s. Wash the residue thoroughly, first with hot water andthen with about 15 ml of ethyl alcohol. Dry the Gooch crucible andcontents of 105:1: l°e in an· air-oven to constant mass. Cool and weigh.Incinerate the contents of the Gooch crucible in an electric muffle furnaceat 6OO:J: 20°C until all the carbonaceous matter is burnt. Cool theGooch crucible containing the ash in a desiccator and weigh.
