4 | IRONBYPROXIBID.COM | DECEMBER 2012
Tim Kryszak, Executive Editor The positive feedback from our first issue of IRON by Proxibid was
overwhelming. I know you will enjoy reading this issue, which is packed full
of important information about the positive state of the construction industry
following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy last month. You will also find
the latest ag-related trends as covered by Machinery Pete, and review of
transportation industry trends as we close out 2012 and look ahead to 2013.
In this issue, you will also have a chance to get up close and personal with
Dayton Roller, President and CEO of Roller Auctions, the largest industrial
auction company in Colorado. Dayton is an astute businessman, and I am
certain you will find his story compelling.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the momentum we are seeing in the
used equipment market as we move into the last four weeks of the year. This
month brings record equipment sales in the Proxibid Marketplace, and is
illustrative of the market at large. Be sure to check out the auction calendar
on pages fourteen and fifteen for a listing of the best used equipment sales in
the industry. You won’t want to miss out on sales from major brands like Cat
Auction Services, RDO Equipment, Titan Machinery and more.
As 2012 comes to a close I want to take this opportunity to wish our readers a
happy and healthy New Year. We look forward to an even more exciting 2013!

ROLLER AUCTIONSSTAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVEBY DANA KAUFMANRoller Auctions was founded by David Roller, who began his career as an engineer with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft working on the Space Shuttle main engine proposal and parts for the SR71 spy plane. In 1972 David moved home to Colorado to pursue a Master’s Degree at the Colorado School of Mines, his Alma Mater. Before starting the program he began helping a longtime family friend who was recovering from an illness run his auction company.
David enjoyed the work so much he decided to stay on.
In January of 1976 David started his own auction company, Roller & Associates Auctioneers, which has grown into Colorado’s largest firm of industrial auctioneers, appraisers and liquidators.
“The auction business has been extremely rewarding. I don’t know of another field that can provide such excitement, variety and challenges as well as the opportunities to help so many
others. It’s been especially gratifying to have my son, Dayton, and his wife, Jenn, working in the business,” said David Roller, former president of Roller Auctions. “Growing Roller Auctions has been a rewarding experience, and I have enjoyed watching the company blossom into the largest auction company of its kind in the state of Colorado.”
But, it wasn’t always so easy.
“It was a rough start,” said the imposingly tall and soft-spoken Dayton Roller, current
For Roller Auctions, a Denver-based heavy equipment and industrial auction company, appraiser and liquidator, staying ahead of the curve is just the way it has always been.

President and CEO of Roller Auctions. “The company started in our basement. The first desk was made of an old door laid across two filing cabinets. We’ve come a long way—and now have a 13 acre facility with 42,000 square feet of office and auction warehouse space.”
Roller Auctions’ headquarters, located in north Denver, is bustling. The activity is constant as equipment moves in and out daily. A fleet of forklifts is in constant motion as new inventory is consigned and purchased.
From the start Roller Auctions was very much a family affair. Dayton began working for the Company as a teenager during the summer months, setting up auctions, cashiering and pitching in wherever his help was needed. Roller Auctions now employs several family members and more than 25 full-time employees. And, even though David Roller has stepped away from day-to-day operations, he is still very much involved with the company.
“Roller Auctions has always been a part of my life, but I was never pressured to join the company,” said Dayton Roller. “I am proud to be able to build upon the great foundation my father built, and I definitely feel pressure to keep growing the business.”
And grow it has, as Roller Auctions’ revenue is up 12% for the year.
Dayton attended Colorado State University, earning a degree in business and accounting before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers on the audit side, specializing in high technology and mining. After six years, he accepted a job offer from a telecommunications company he had helped take public.
“The company was a long commute from home, but I was intrigued by the opportunity and it was an exciting time. After about two years—around the time the dot-com bubble burst—I reevaluated my career and decided to make a change. I wanted to be able to spend more time with my family, and I wanted to work with my father.”
With two young children at home, one of which has special needs, this was not a difficult decision to make. Dayton joined Roller Auctions in May 2002, and has never looked back.
“Initially, I didn’t understand the industry—the business—it took close to a year for me to fully grasp it. There is so much detail that goes into planning and executing every auction. Every sale is important and there are no do-overs. You cannot extend a sale or make up for one later in the year the way you can in a retail environment.”
Though it took some time to completely embrace the auction industry, Dayton had a solid business foundation from his years as an accountant, which helped him to quickly understand the importance of every auction.
“I am motivated by helping to solve problems. I one hundred percent believe that our solution is the best solution for our clients, and always want the best results for them. When I’m talking to a client who is selling their business for any number of reasons I want to recover as much for them as possible. Their livelihood is on the line – they’re depending on the success of the auction.”
As with any organization, there is a turning point at which things become very exciting and when you believe your business is undergoing a transformation. For Roller Auctions, this has occurred on three such occasions.
The first such event took place in August
“Initially, I didn’t understand the industry—the business—it took close to a year for me to fully grasp it.”

2004, when the Company held its first live auction webcast. Being an early adopter certainly has its benefits. According to Dayton, including live online bidding was a no brainer. He is constantly looking for ways to improve the business, and this was the next logical step. There was a real learning curve in deciding what Internet components to use in which auctions.
“We recognized early on that this was
the best way to reach buyers from across the globe, and to be able to connect with them on a personal level. They can see and hear us as we’re calling bids, and feel connected to the sale even if they cannot be there in person.”
But, what really shifted Roller Auctions’ business was the decision to move auctions to an online-only format.
In December 2005 the Company received a contract for the liquidation of a local mortgage company moving its operations out of state. This was a very large auction comprising four floors of office and computer equipment in the Denver Tech Center. The timing between Christmas and New Year’s was not ideal but was the timeframe specified.
“In looking at the inventory, and the location, we determined the best course of action would be to post the auction as an Internet-only sale,” said Dayton Roller. “This was the first time our company had posted a sale online only. We had only two weeks to catalog and
market the sale and had no idea how it would do. Online activity for the sale was incredible. We now conduct more than 90 percent of our auctions online only.”
Now, the Company conducts more than 150 auctions each year. While the live sale is important to Roller Auctions’ business, the ability to sell online ensures the Company can bring more sales to a broader audience.
“The online platform is important. You have to provide your bidders with the highest quality of video, photography, item descriptions…everything has to be top notch. Offering online bidding has allowed us to grow the business, and has freed us up to continue to work on the business even while auctions are taking place.”
The third important shift for Roller Auctions occurred in the summer of 2012 when the Company embarked on a re-branding campaign.
“Brand consistency is important. We felt it was time to overhaul our logo, colors and brand essence to truly effectively market our company. We have a great story to tell and it starts with our brand. We want our brand to be synonymous with auctions, and I felt that through a re-branding
campaign we could make that happen.”
Roller Auctions, with the help of an outside agency, developed a new logo, brand assets and company Web site to showcase this effort and the return has been well worth the investment. By leveraging new and more targeted advertising campaigns and social media, the Company has seen great results. Web site visits have increased nearly
57% and page views are up more than 92% and Roller Auctions has been able to attract high-level consignments from major equipment owners.
Looking ahead to 2013, Dayton Roller expects a very busy year.
“We continue to get busier every year. With the economy, we are receiving more calls from secured creditors and we are doing a lot of bank work,” said Dayton Roller. “The auction industry is somewhat recession proof. As the economy turns around we will see consignors selling old equipment to make room for new. It’s cyclical, but we’re always in the mix. I am looking forward to 2013. We are very busy and our focus is on managing workload and executing a high quality product for our customers.”
“We now conduct more than 90 percent of our auctions online only.”

Shipping large items can be a pain. Crating a bulldozer to send from Tennessee to Tokyo is no small feat, and the price that comes along with shipping an item of that size can be steep. This scenario has become more and more common as buyers have made the shift to purchasing oversized items, such as heavy equipment, online.
That’s where uShip comes in. uShip is the world’s largest and most trusted online shipping marketplace, making it easier, faster and more cost effective for online buyers and sellers to ship oversized items. uShip can help you ship anything you need—whether it’s an antique car or a brand new tractor. By connecting you to thousands of shipping companies worldwide, uShip will ensure that your items are transported quickly and efficiently, for the lowest price possible.
“We’ve recognized that buyers are becoming more comfortable with purchasing heavy equipment, cars,
boats, motorcycles and other large items online, and the need for a reliable, affordable shipping solution has become increasingly important. We found a solution that ensures our customers get the lowest price on shipping, while transport companies fill extra space in their vehicles, so everyone wins,” said Philip Strohl, uShip’s vice president of business development.
Using uShip is easy: simply place a shipment listing on uShip’s website, and watch as feedback-rated transport companies compete to win your business by offering the lowest prices available. Carriers use uShip to maximize their loads and fill extra truck space at deeply discounted rates, helping you save an average of 50 percent over commercial rates.
At uShip, you have the power—the power to choose which carrier you think is best and the power to find a price that works for you. What’s more is that uShip lets you compare these competing quotes for
free, and once you choose your carrier, you can make your payment online. If it’s an especially important item, you have the power to insure your item with one of uShip’s cargo insurance options.
“uShip has helped thousands of people save a significant amount of time and money by connecting them with our network of customer-reviewed heavy haul carriers that bid to win the business,” said Strohl. “This allows buyers to not be constrained to equipment only in their local area, and gives them the opportunity to source that perfect piece of equipment regardless of location.”
When it comes to finding a way to transport hard-to-ship items, uShip is a clear choice. It’s the best way to find the transporter you need for the best price available.

PULSE SANDY PROMPTS TWO KINDS OF RECOVERY
The latest reports from national economists claim that despite the predicted $50 billion in damages caused by Hurricane Sandy, the storm will actually have a positive impact on the nation’s economy. Forbes Magazine reports that the damages caused by the Halloween storm may put it roughly in-line with the second most destructive storm in the nation’s history—well behind Hurricane Katrina at $113.4 billion.
According to Barclay’s economic research team, damages caused by Hurricane Sandy will cost the nation between $30 and $50 billion—comprised mostly from the destruction of assets and the disruption of capital flow.
However, as Americans on the East Coast struggle to get back on their feet, some industries are seeing an uptick in productivity. The construction industry is expecting the greatest boost in the wake of the storm. The Huffington Post reports that construction hiring in the long-depressed U.S. economy will rise in the states most affected by the storm. Construction firms, contractors and local governments will have to hire labor to rebuild and renovate homes, roads, bridges, commercial properties and more.
The State of New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development reports that the state’s unemployment rate in September 2012 was 9.8 percent after the private sector added about 1,100 jobs that month. Approximately 4,200 construction jobs were recorded in September—down from previous months.
Before the storm hit, Charles Steindel, Chief Economist for the New Jersey Department of Treasury, was positive about the economic changes New Jersey would face in the upcoming months.
“While New Jersey’s job market in September still showed the effect of the summer doldrums apparent in the national figures these last few months, there are positive signs,” said Steindel in the monthly labor report. “The state’s labor force participation rate and employment population ratios remain above national averages, our long-term uptrend in private sector employment continues and September’s dip in unemployment might be a sign that the situation will be getting better.”
Other states’ construction industries are also facing potential improvements related to the aftermath of Sandy.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s statistics for North Carolina, the unemployment rate in the state was 9.6 percent in September 2012. There were approximately 169,300 construction jobs during that time period—down 4.7 percent in a year-over-year comparison.
The construction industries in these two states will flourish once hiring begins to clean up after the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Experts are predicting strong economic growth from the hiring boost.
“This is going to be a net positive, particularly in the mid-Atlantic,” said Sophia Koropeckyj, managing director Moody’s Economy.com.
Construction jobs are an important part of a state’s economy. The Huffington Post reports that the average hourly pay for a construction job is $25.86—higher than the average hourly pay for all U.S. private-sector positions at $23.58. In addition, construction pays much better than the average hourly wage in retail ($16.43) and the leisure and hospitality sector at ($13.35).
Increased employment in the construction market often results in job creation in other industries like architecture, real estate, home retail and improvement. Home Depot and Lowe’s, also reported that during a week where stock prices were flat their businesses saw stock values increase by three percent and almost six percent, respectively, according to The Huffington Post. This correlation was seen by many retailers that specialize in catering to rennovators.
As the nation continues to recover from Hurricane Sandy, the construction industry and all supporting businesses will see a boost in the upcoming months.

The global economic recession has wreaked havoc on world markets for four years, but some industries weathered the storm better than others and are beginning to see growth.
BUCKING THE TRENDFar away from Brussels and the EU finance meetings, the U.S. transportation industry is chugging along at a slow, yet steady pace. Trucking activity has grown more than three percent from 2011 to 2012, railroads are beginning to look to natural gas options over coal and a reduction in energy prices could boost all modes of transport in the country.
According to Trucking Info, concerns about weak oil demand all over the world, due in part to worsening tensions in the Middle East and the EU sovereign debt crisis, have led to lower energy prices as the winter months approach. The Energy Information Administration weekly report, as of October 23, found that a drop in the value of diesel fuel was occurring in many regions of the country, including California, the Gulf Coast and the Mid-Atlantic region.
A drop in the price of energy could help to support the U.S. trucking industry, which is still growing, albeit at a slower pace than the summer months. According to MNI News, tepid economic expansion led to a slight slowdown in trucking from July to August, but the 3.2 percent year-on-year gain in the tonnage index boosted confidence in the sector.
IMPACT OF RECOVERING U.S. ECONOMYDespite the ever-present concerns of the global economy dipping back into a recession, the emergence of better housing data in the U.S. and increased consumer activity have injected some positive sentiment into trucking.
“The housing sector is finally moving in the right direction, enough so that we’re feeling it in trucking,” said Bob Costello, the chief economist for the American Trucking Associations.
Hiring trends also indicate that the transportation industry is recovering, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics report indicated that the sector added more than 17,000 jobs in September, a relatively significant portion of the total gains made by the U.S. economy.
“The housing sector is finally moving in the right direction, enough so that we’re feeling it in trucking.”

Increased commerce in and out of U.S. ports is also beginning to support the growth in trucking and the overall transportation industry.
Shipping lines have reported an uptick in activity, according to Bloomberg News, as U.S. imports of containerized goods reached the highest level since before the recession as of October 22.
Imports of everything from furniture to car parts rose 7.9 percent in the third quarter of 2012, when compared with the previous year.
“The imports are consistent with the macroeconomic picture in the U.S., and things just turned significantly better,” Nigel Prentis, the head of research at HSBC Shipping Ltd., a London-based shipbroker consultant, told Bloomberg.
CHANGES TO RAIL MAY BOOST GROWTHThe rail industry has seen more of a mixed picture over the past year, but growth could occur as activity begins to pick up and adjustments are made.
Energy & Capital reported that rail companies are beginning to look to shale oil shipments over coal, as the the former is outpacing the latter, in terms of demand and activity. This switch has supported growth for a number of major train lines, and has helped to support a number of industries across the country.
Scientific American reported that rail and trucking companies may begin to work together to traverse some of the toughest terrain in the U.S., a move that has been supported by the growth in certain industries and a call for greater efficiency to limit overhead costs.
New investments in infrastructure projects by both sectors could help to stimulate further growth and coordination.

What will used farm equipment values do in 2013? Good question. Over my 23 plus years of tracking auction sale prices on all types of equipment sold throughout the U.S. and Canada I’ve never claimed to be a fortune teller—able to see into the future.
But what I can do is form opinions based on the best data available, played against the daily stream of conversations I have with farmers, dealers, auctioneers, appraisers and AG lenders.
RELEVANT DATA + HUMAN FEEDBACKBack in August I began to notice an uptick in auction sale prices on nearly every type of used farm equipment in good condition. The USDA’s crop report came out August 10, commodity prices shot up immediately and I began to see auction prices soar, even from drought stricken areas. Sale prices for pieces like a 1985 AC 8070 front-wheel assist tractor with 3,600 hours sold for $34,500 during a September 7, 2012 farm auction in
east-central Missouri, the highest auction sale price I’ve seen in nearly sixteen years on an AC 8070.
These rising sale prices in late summer into early fall made me feel strongly that we’d see even stronger auction sale prices come November and December when all the year-end tax buyers pile into the used equipment market. This prediction proved to be spot on as a steady string of exceptionally strong auction sale prices poured in.

RESULTSThe past eight years I’ve seen overall used equipment values dip during the second quarter. Want proof? Have a look at my “Used Value Index” Quarterly Report (1 - 10 rating scale, 6.0 = stable/normal used values).

TREND LINE
SO, WHAT DO I SEE FOR 2013?I think the first quarter 2013 will continue to see strong auction sale prices on all types of used equipment in good condition. The rest of 2013 could be a better time to buy. The past eight years I’ve seen overall used equipment values dip during the second quarter. Proof is seen in my Machinery Pete “Used Value Index” Quarterly report (1-10 rating scale, 6.0 = stable/normal used values).
I suspect we’ll see the same in 2013. In fact, this trend could be accentuated depending on what happens in Washington. Will the search for more money lead to an altered tax code with reduced or eliminated Sec 179 immediate write-offs for business asset purchases (new & used equipment)? If so, no doubt used equipment values will be impacted. Stay tuned.
