President’s Message
Dear Fellow Members, Our 70th Anniversary Celebration and President’s Dance was a magnificent event and thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. After enjoying cocktails and fabulous hors d’ oeuvres in the lounge, our guests repaired upstairs where the Events Committee turned the hall into an elegant and sophisticated venue. The ladies wore beautiful gowns and dresses with more than one gentleman in black tie. The dinner was grand and the dance floor was filled all evening. The annual President’s Award was given to Colleen Kissane, and twenty members received Life Membership. The Mass and brunch on Sunday were just beautiful and enjoyed by all in attendance. If you ’re curious, look at the beautiful pictures of the event on our website http://www.irishamericanhome.com/Photos. Photographs of several recent events are available for viewing here. Thank you to the members that took the time to vote during our recent elections. Please join me in welcoming Sheila Dupuis Green to the Board of Directors; Mary Sayers DaMatto as Vice President, Jenn Hedges as Corresponding Secretary and Padraic Clemens as Sargeant at Arms. Also join me in thanking outgoing Director Eileen McGee, and outgoing Officers Maura O’Donnell (Corresponding Secretary) and Jeffrey Reynolds (Sargeant at Arms) for their service to our club. There are many events and happenings this month and into December…details are contained in this newsletter and on our website. Like us on Facebook and open those emails we send with updates and reminders. Please make every effort to support and attend one or more of these events. Our ever popular Pub Quiz is back on November 21st followed by our 3rd Annual Lights of Love Carol Sing and Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, November 27th. If you like to get a jump start on your holiday shopping, our Catalogue Shop-ping Party (November 7th) and Christmas Shopping Day (December 6th) are the perfect occasions to visit your club! Life membership is awarded to members who have been members in good standing for twenty-five continuous years and have reached sixty five years of age. Congrat-ulations to John Barry, Thomas Callinan, Mi-chael Clifford, Kevin Crowley, Raymond Cusick, Phillip Kallaugher, Katie Maio, Anne Mannion, James McVeigh, James Moher, John O’Boyle, Geraldine Roberts, Michael Rocchio, Vince Roche, Rose Salonia, Michael Sinon, Andrew Sullivan, James Szerejko, Bernadette White and Donald White.
This and that… Many thanks to the IAHS Golf League’s donation to the IAHS Scholarship Fund in the amount of $3,800.00! The Scholar-ship Fund is the beneficiary of the annual golf tournament held every September. If you are a golfer…consider marking your calendar for September 9th, 2016, and supporting this tournament that benefits our young Irish American scholars. Congratulations to Colleen Kissane, the 2015 President’s Award winner! The President’s Award is given in recognition of the extraordinary contributions of a member for the benefit of this Society. Colleen, who is currently our Treasurer, gives many, many hours to our club…many of them behind the scenes and many of them on her own personal time or vacation time from work. She spends numerous hours compiling and analyzing data for the board to review and consider when making financial decisions on be-half of the club. Congratulations, Colleen! Sr. Peggy Evans, SND, recently attend-ed the joint session of Congress during His Holiness, Pope Francis’ recent ad-dress, as the guest of Congressman John Larson. Sr. Peggy was also present dur-ing the Pope’s visit to the White House, sitting only feet away from the Pope, President Obama and the First Lady. Such close proximity to His Holiness is surely a once in a life time experience. Sr. Peggy was also accompanied by Fr. James Nock, from our Lady of Peace in East Hartford. A lemonade stand and bake sale was held in October by a group of young-sters….the kids of some of our mem-bers…to benefit the child of another member family who is battling cancer. This endeavor was the brainchild of these kids. They planned, made posters and advertised the heck out of this event and it was an enormous success…thanks to their hard work and the generosity of our members. Congratulations to Nicholas, Jack and Sean Gherard, Sarah and Andrew Breen, and Shane and Lynd-say Donston. “Your parents took an oath when they joined that speaks of hav-ing the “welfare and best interests” of your fellow members…to basically have each other’s backs. You have epitomized those words. It’s what this club is really all about. We are so proud of you!”

HONOR GUARD It is this Society’s tradition to honor our
deceased members by the presence of an Honor Guard at the funeral service and interment. While we have several dedicated members who faithful-ly participate in this tradition, we would like to ensure a full complement at each service. If you are interested in participating when the need aris-es, please contact Charlie Murray at (860)633-0663 or Kathleen Blake (860)633-0587. The Honor Guard will participate in the funeral services for all members when the member has previously requested or the family re-quests our services. If you would like to have an Honor Guard at a member’s funeral, please call Charlie or Kathleen to advise them of the arrangements.
IRISH SET DANCE CLASSES
Traditional Irish country set dancing classes are held in the upstairs hall on Wednesday evenings (except the fourth Wednesday of each month). This is a cultural function of the Irish American Home Society and there is no charge. The only requirements are hard-soled shoes and a little stamina! Classes begin at 7:00 p.m. For more information, please call John Droney (860)521-2696.
Memorial Funds
Please consider naming one of two funds the IAHS has established over the years to receive memorial donations upon your death. Both funds are intended to memorialize our deceased loved ones while benefiting our members. The first is our Scholarship Fund which was established to grant educational scholarships to the children of members in good standing. Scholarships are awarded in June of each year. The second fund is our Building Renovation Fund, established to help fund the proposed new building and renova-tion of the existing building.
IRISH NORTHERN AID The Hartford Unit of Irish Northern Aid meets the 3rd Friday of every month at 9:00 p.m. in the downstairs hall of the Irish American Home.
