Dear Friend of IRIM,

Katrina. Darfur. Immigration reform. Interfaith dialogue. Our nation has been preoccupied by thesestories throughout 2006. So has Interfaith Refugeeand Immigration Ministries (IRIM). Many critical issuesand concerns of our time—global, national andlocal—merge right here in our IRIM community. Behindeach story, there are real people who find themselvescaught between larger forces. IRIM’s mission is to support such real people by providing commonground, where people in need come together to draw strength, and rebuild lives. IRIM serves as thecritical refuge—connecting people and creatingopportunities to forge partnership and promote under-standing of issues affecting refugees and immigrants.

Ownership, partnership, and participation in a common cause by smaller social units is, quite simply, what “community” is all about. Once again, this past year IRIM joined countless partners in celebratingcommunity. Shared understanding and interests, whether loosely or closely associated, form the buildingblocks of community. In 2006, IRIM aimed as neverbefore to develop common cause with every facet ofthis gem of diversity we call Chicago. As a result, wehave plenty stories to tell. And IRIM’s stories tell plentyabout who we are, too. They reflect our values. Theydefine our community, and build unity. Here are someof my favorite stories from 2006:

Leap of faith: Last December, the JewishReconstructionist Congregation (JRC), led by memberScott Pollock, stepped forward as a sponsor, barely three days before a Somali refugee family of five landedat O’Hare. While they would have wanted severalweeks to prepare for their first family, in record-timeJRC formed a committee, organized a furniture drive, and assigned tasks to help escort the family to important appointments. In just a few weeks, JRC had succeeded in providing a warm welcome for the family, giving them a head start to learnEnglish, and find jobs. Perhaps most compelling is that, if not for coming together for refugee sponsorship, this new refugee ministry at JRC and the many resulting connections would not exist today. JRC’s members continue to support IRIM’s various programs in countless ways.

Giving back: When I think of empowerment, I think of regeneration. Sanusie, a 15-year old from war-tornSierra Leone, signed up to tutor other young refugeesin our after-school program last fall. That’s quiteremarkable because when he arrived in the U.S. threeyears ago, this amazing young man could neitherread, nor write. Immediately, he was enrolled in theRefugee Youth Program and matched with in-hometutors. Working with his tutors through middle school,he progressed rapidly. He now attends LoyolaAcademy in Wilmette on a full scholarship. Clients who return to become mentors themselves present our community with immeasurable gifts.

Voice: You will see throughout our annual report testimonies from IRIM’s community. Baraka, in a quoteon the opposing page, talks about a weight beinglifted thanks to the IRIM community’s support. Also, nearthe end of our report, Helen shares the importance to her of engaging her children as volunteers. At IRIM,we are accountable to Baraka by providing strong programs, and Helen, through a thoughtful volunteerprogram. We believe deeply that both clients and supporters play key roles in building unity.

It’s said that every picture tells a story—and saves a thousand words. So now let me invite you to turn the page and lose yourself in IRIM’s COMMUNITY of friends, family, and supporters. Let our fantastic pictures do the storytelling. And whether you’re alongtime IRIM friend, or a newcomer to our community, come join us. Be united with us in our common cause.Thank you for taking time to reflect with me on the unifying success stories of 2006.

Sincerely,

Greg WangerinExecutive Director

Providing for the Needs of Our ClientsInterfaith Refugee and Immigration Ministries (IRIM) hasa 25-year history of helping refugees and immigrantsbegin new lives. Providing for the needs of refugee families through culturally appropriate services, IRIM’sprograms promote empowerment and long-term self-sufficiency. By engaging sponsors, donors, and vol-unteers, IRIM builds unity to create a vibrant, self-reliantcommunity for refugees and immigrants in Chicago.Together, IRIM’s staff of 34 and over 200 volunteersprovided services to some 2,500 clients through our holistic programs and services last year, including:

Employment & Adjustment Services: Assisted 359 clients (approximately 105 families), and found jobsfor 191 clients at nearly 100 Chicagoland companies.

English Language Training: Helped 233 clients learnworkplace English through classes in three levels.

Vocational Training: Offered computer literacy and technical training to 121 clients, and achieved a 75%successful completion rate.

Refugee Youth Program: Guided 103 refugee youth in finding personal, social, and academic success, emphasizing creative and artistic activities.

Women’s Empowerment Program: Provided opportu-nities for 350 women to learn life skills through Englishclasses, mentorship, field trips, sewing classes, andthe New Hope Sewing Cooperative.

Senior Services Initiative: Improved quality of life forover 220 elderly refugees and immigrants throughtranslation/interpretation, accompaniment services, and outreach workshops on changing healthcare benefits.

Welcoming New CommunitiesSince 1982, IRIM has provided a warm welcome forrefugees who have escaped terror, persecution, and war. In the last year, IRIM resettled 254 refugeesfrom 19 countries, including newly arrived MeskhetianTurks, a marginalized ethnic group forced out of Soviet Georgia by Stalin in the 1940s. IRIM resettled

49 Meskhetian Turks who had been living in exile inKrasnodar Krai in Southwest Russia. To promote aquick path to self-reliance, IRIM provided newly arrivedfamilies with cultural adjustment services, English language classes and job training and placement.

Forging PartnershipsWith a mission that directs us to engage others in building support for refugees and immigrants, partner-ships form the core of IRIM’s work. In FY2006, IRIMpartnered with dozens of businesses, including ErvaTool and Manufacturing Co., Inc., Embassy Suites, andFairmont Hotel, to place clients into sustainable jobs. In its fifth year, IRIM’s New Hope Sewing Cooperativeexpanded relationships with Enterprise Kitchen and the Jewish Vocational Services, delivering high-quality products while increasing profits for the womenand their families. IRIM also worked with graduate students at DePaul University to launch an online storeon IRIM’s Web site. Partnering with the Department ofCommerce and Economic Opportunity’s Digital Divide

Initiative for the second year, IRIM’s Vocational TrainingProgram and Computer Technology Center providedlearners with computer literacy training in Word, GeneralOffice, AutoCAD, and job readiness training. Volunteers, aged 8 to 80, working as individuals and groups, donatedover 8,500 hours of service to IRIM.

IRIM expanded its community of support by engagingsome 52 congregations of faith and community groupsand 135 individuals to sponsor refugee families, raisingcritical financial, in-kind, and face-to-face support fornewly arrived refugee families. New partners this yearincluded the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation in Evanston, St. Hilary’s Episcopal Church of ProspectHeights, Kenilworth Girl Scout Troop 102, and St. JohnLutheran Church of Wilmette.

Responding to a CallIn September 2005, when Hurricanes Katrina and Ritaleft communities in the Gulf Region ravaged, over7,500 evacuees found themselves in Illinois. Using therefugee resettlement model, IRIM went to work rightaway to ensure that evacuees’ basic needs were met, families reunited, and that they were given links tocommunity resources. By June, our Hurricane RelocationProgram (HRP) had engaged 26 congregations andcommunity groups to assist over 87 evacuee women, men and children to rebuild lives in Illinois. IRIM mobilized resources from the community for the HRP,including $40,000 in cash donations (and much moredirectly to evacuees) for rent, utilities and food, offers ofrent free housing, donated furniture, and countlesshours invested in community orientation, transporta-tion, and neighborly support.

Educating Elected Officials and the PublicIRIM, believing deeply in the power of creating changethrough advocacy, joined various efforts to highlight

urgent issues affecting refugees and immigrants. At the end of March, IRIM traveled to Springfield with refugee clients to advocate for continued state funding for refugees. This team included aMeskhetian Turk who had been in the U.S. less than a year. On May 1, IRIM joined thousands at two rallies—one to support fair and humane immigration policy organized by multiethnic stakeholders, and one calling to end the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, organized by various human-rights organizations. In honor of World Refugee Day 2006, IRIM joined theIllinois Department of Human Services and others to host events including a talk by the UNHCR’s ThomasAlbrecht, cultural performances at the refugee-ownedWild Hare on Clark, and the unveiling of a RefugeeCharter signed by refugees.

Coming Together and CelebratingOn April 27, IRIM organized its first annual fundraiser,Celebrating Communities of Hope, for over 260refugees, donors, community supporters and volun-teers, netting over $16,000 for the work of IRIM. An overwhelming success, the event brought togetherIRIM’s community of refugee sponsors, former clients, volunteers, and donors to raise critical fundsfor IRIM’s mission. Most importantly, the event helped to deepen our community’s network of sup-porters, further diversifying our funding base and ensuring IRIM’s presence in the community formany years to come.

“Words cannot capture our gratitude. This supportspeaks to the depth of thoughtfulness and generositythat our community of supporters has, and will continue to extend to Chicago’s newest refugees and immigrants,” said Susan Horowitz, event committee chairperson.

The mindset of giving back to the community has to start with our children, and what better way for them to learn than to help others. Asmentors for refugees, we become completely absorbed in their lives, cultures, family and friends, offering our children the priceless educationof how others live, what is important to them, and what is just so unimportant in our lives.” —Helen SweitzerA volunteer since 2004, Helen mentors and tutors with IRIM’s Women’s Empowerment Program and Youth Program, and builds support for refugee sponsorship. Helen lives in Wilmette with her husband, daughter, and two sons (pictured above).
