Chicago River Schools Network Irene Hernandez Family Picnic Area North Branch of the Chicago River Address or Nearest Intersection: Foster Ave. and Kilbourn Ave. just east of Cicero Ave., Chicago, IL Directions: Parking lot is north of Foster Ave. From the lot, cross the large lawn and head towards the back corner by the woods. There you will see a short, steep trail down to river. The trail extends along edge of river. Owner: Forest Preserves of Cook County (permit required) Habitat Description: Forested site along the river. Frequent sightings of wildlife. Excellent site for macroinvertebrates in the riffle just east of the tracks. Access to water: Good access. Many entry points down small declines to water. Water is usually shallow and safe for wading. Best access is just downriver from the bridge. Amenities: Bathrooms are seasonal, but available. Call (708) 771-1088 to have them opened. Benches, shelter and a large lawn for lunch. Parking: Lot available. Buses can remain there during the trip Capacity: 60 students
