Part A:

The plan of action is chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality

enhancement and the outcome is achieved by the end of the year. The college reopened on

7th June, 2010 for the academic year 2010-11.

The following is the plan of action chalked out for the academic year 2010-11.

1. To organize guest lectures, seminars, nature trail etc. 2. To organize study tours and field visits. 3. To take necessary steps for starting unaided course B. Com. (Accounting and

Finance).

4. To relieve needy teachers for orientation and refresher courses. 5. To relieve teachers for participation and paper presentation at Seminars &

Workshops.

6. To start the study centre of Open Universities such as IGNOU – New Delhi. 7. To establish Commerce and English Language Laboratory. 8. To encourage the faculty for research. 9. To upgrade infrastructure of the College. 10. To raise NCC units. 11. To strengthen the unit of DLLE. 12. To strengthen health services.

1. Activities reflecting the goal and objectives of the institution:

Goals and Objectives of the Institution are –

a) To encourage, spread and facilitate higher education among all sections of the

Society in general and among Guajarati Speaking Community in particular

irrespective of class, caste and creed.

b) To mould their character, to make them good and responsible citizen.

c) To inculcate the sense of discipline as objectives can be achieved through strict

disciplined approach.

d) To develop students intellectually and socially responsible so as to develop their

overall personality.

e) To sensitize students about current social issues and social responsibilities as world

environment is becoming more self-centred.

f) To unlock the multiple facets of the students and to facilitate realization of

student’s potential for excellence.

g) To motivate the students for continuous personal and professional growth.

h) To instil moral values to mould them into excellent human resource.

i) To achieve status of institution with potential for excellence.

The Institution strictly follows the directives given by the Government of Maharashtra

and University of Mumbai regarding admission. Since it is a Gujarati Minority college

50% of the total seats are reserved for students belonging to the Gujrati speaking

community.

At the entry level students are admitted on merit and the merit list of students is

prominently displayed on the college notice board and website of the college.

The data of admissions of F. Y. B. Com. and F. Y. B. A. students, including the Gujrati

speaking students is self-explanatory.

Keeping in view the above mentioned goals and objectives, the college has formed various forums and associations to conduct various activities/programs. The college invites resource persons from varied fields who enrich our students intellectually by sharing experiences.

I. Remedial Teaching and Intensive Coaching:

It is offered to students who need extra and special attention. The teachers from different

departments take the initiative for this. The departments of Commerce, Economics,

Mathematics, English, Sociology, Psychology, Environmental Studies etc. conduct

remedial teaching and intensive coaching during the second term after analyzing the result

of the first term.

II. Art Circle:

Art circle organized the following activities:

• Formation of Art Circle on 16th July, 2010.

• Celebration of Guru Purnima on 28th July, 2010.

• Principal’s Address to the First Year students in college hall on 28th July, 2010.

• Celebration of the Foundation Day and Academic Prize Distribution Function of the

College on 17th August, 2010. Prin. Dr. S. T. Gadade, Dean of Commerce,

University of Mumbai was the Chief Guest. The Special students from St. John

Baptist School and Jr. College, Thane were present and entertained the gathering

with solo and group dance.

• Students have been selected for One-act play in Marathi organized by Indian

National Theatre, Mumbai.

• Participation in various Inter-collegiate and University level Competitions.

• Various competitions such as Rangoli, Cooking, T-Shirt Painting, Best out of

Waste, Glass Painting, Painting etc. were organized in ‘NAVRANG’ from

6th September to 9th October, 2010.

• Various Days such as Traditional Day, Saree and Tie Day, Khadi Day, Surprise Day

(for teachers) were celebrated from 21st to 23rd December, 2010.

• Annual Day and Prize Distribution ceremony was celebrated on 2nd February, 2010.

Noted Educationist as well as media personality Ms. Vasantiben Gokani graced the

occasion as the Chief Guest for the function. Hon’ble President of T.J. Education

Society Sheth Dr. Nanjibhai Khimjibhai Thakkar presided over the function and

guided the students on the occasion.

III. Sports Activities:

• The college has a well-equipped gymkhana and gymnasium. It has all the necessary

amenities and equipments for physical exercise and games. Sports inculcate a

sportsman spirit among students. The Gymkhana also guides students regarding

their physical fitness with help of regular discussions between the coach, the

chairperson and students. We Organized Inter-collegiate Volley ball tournaments in

the month of September, 2010 on the occasion of Birthday of our President Sheth

Dr. Nanjibhai Khimjibhai Thakkar Thanawala.

• Annual Athletic Meet was organized at the Central Ground where athletic events

were held on 14th December, 2010. Various events such as Volley Ball, Tug of War,

Slow Cycling, Discus throw, Javelin Throw, Running, Skipping etc were held.

• Students are given coaching in Volley Ball and Cricket.

• Students participated in various indoor and outdoor games organized by University

of Mumbai. We are the Runners Up at the Inter-Collegiate Volley Ball Tournament.

• Inter-Class Tournaments were conducted for various Indoor Games such as Carom,

Table Tennis and Chess in December, 2010.

• Outdoor Games were conducted in the months of November - December 2010.

Outdoor games such as Cricket, Volley Ball, Tug of War, Running, Slow Cycling

etc. were organized at the Central Ground, which is in the vicinity of the College.

IV. Nature Club:

The Nature Club was formed in the month of July 2010 and the activities and various

programmes were organized. The details are as under:

• Various competitions were organized for students such as essay writing, poster

making.

• A Nature trail was organized to Karnala Birds Sanctuary on 19th September, 2010.

V. Staff Academy:

Staff Academy has been formed for giving a platform to the staff to exhibit their

talents. Staff members presented their papers and shared their knowledge. Also guest

speakers were invited to give valuable inputs to staff members.

• A guidance lecture was organised on Exploring Research Opportunities at Staff

Academy by Dr. S. D. Koshti on 9th September, 2010.

• 3-Day Course on “Art of Living” conducted between 26th to 28 Decemeber, 2010

for teaching and administrative staff.

VI. Women Development Cell:

• Inauguration of Women Development Cell and workshop was organized on

‘Women and Gender’ on 3rd September, 2010.

• Various competitions such as Essay Writing, Poster Making on contemporary issues

were organized. Many students actively participated in these competitions.

VII. Literary Circle

Literary Circle fortifies and satiates literary needs of students. It is multidimensional and

varied in its functions as literary activities in four languages are arranged. Literary Circle

has four sub-committees namely, Hindi Sahitya Manch, Gujrati Sahitya Mandal, Marathi

Vangmay Mandal and English Literary Association.

The following were the array of activities in the academic year:

• Gujrati Sahitya Mandal organized a guest lecture on 6th February, 2010 by

Ms. Amitaben Shah, Corporator, Mulund requested the students to stand up for the

cause of the nation as it is the need of the hour.

• The inauguration of Marathi Vangmay Mandal was held on 20th August, 2010 by

our Ex-student Mr. Kshitij Kulkarni, a Marathi Play Actor.

• Wall paper on the theme ‘Mayboli’ was started from this year.

• A Book Review Competition was held in the month of September, 2010 by English

Literary Association.

VIII. Career oriented Seminars and Placement related services:

The Career Guidance and Placement Cell organized various seminars and Workshops:

• A Guidance lecture on “Preparing for MPSC Examination” by Ms. Sonam Patil a

Ex-student of our College on 11th August, 2010

• Guidance lecture on “Preparation of MBA examination” by Centre for Management

Institute for B.M.S. students on 9th September, 2010.

• Guidance lecture on “Career in IT Industry” by Karox Technology was arranged for

B. Sc. (IT) students on 28th September, 2010.

• Guest lecture on “Career options in BPO and KPO" by DMAX Solutions was

arranged on 3rd December, 2010.

• Campus Interview was conducted for the placement in the field BPO and KPO by

DMAX Solutions on 4th December, 2010.

• Exploring career awareness through notices.

IX. Commerce Association:

The Commerce Association is formed with a view to inspire and provide a platform to

students to discuss about current trends in Business and Commerce.

• Inauguration of Association function held on 22nd July, 2010 at the hands of

Dr. Ramprakash Nair, a Research Guide and Head, Department of Commerce,

R.K.T College, Ulhasnagar. He shared his view on case studies, a recently

introduced scheme by the University for Commerce Paper-III. Dr. Rajgopalan,

Head, Department of Commerce, Model College, Dombivali expressed his thoughts

on Marketing. Ms. Kishori Bhagat, Pragati College of Arts and Commerce,

Dombivali inaugurated the Wall Paper ‘Business Vision’.

X. Visits to various places:

Industrial visits have been arranged to various places for making students aware of the

practical aspect of industries.

• Industrial visit to Chandigarh of S.Y. and T.Y.B.M.S. students from 26th December,

2010 to 2nd January, 2011.

• Industrial visit to Hydrabad of S.Y.B.Sc.(IT) students from 17th February, 2011 to

22nd February, 2011.

• Industrial visit to Silvasa of F.Y.B.M.S. students from 26th February, 2011 to 27th

February, 2011.

• Department of English had organized visits to Malls and Banks as a part of tutorial.

XI. Personality Development Programmes:

The following are the activities organized by planning forum:

• A workshop on stress management was organized by Manashakti Kendra, Lonavala

on 23rd November, 2010.

• Planning Forum in collaboration with Department of Economics organized the 45th

PSheth Walchand Hirachand Elocution Competition on 15th December, 2010. The

following students emerged as winners:

First Prize: Ms. Namrata Chikane (SYBCom) Cash Prize Rs 3000/-

Second Prize: Ms Poonam Bhamra (SYBCom) Cash Prize Rs 2000/-

Third Prize: Ms Anushree Kachare SYBSc (IT) Cash Prize Rs 1000/-

Consolation Prize: Ms Padmja Moudhgalya (TYBMS).

2. New Academic Programmes initiated (UG and PG): The institution has started UG course B.Com. (Banking and Insurance).

3. Innovation in curricular design and transaction:

The University issues the guidelines regarding curricular design and accordingly

Institution immediately initiates the necessary steps in its implementation such as

revision of syllabus, change of paper pattern in various subjects. The faculty also

participated in the curriculum related workshops.

4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started:

The faculty engaged lectures in different disciplines. Department of Mathematics and

Statistics has conducted a guest lecture for F.Y.B.A. students on Diagram & Graphs.

5. Examination reforms implemented:

Number of reforms in the examination procedure and system has been implemented as per

the discussions and decisions taken by the competent Authority within the framework and

guidelines of University of Mumbai.

• Students have been given separate examination seat numbers.

• Setting of question papers within the college premises.

• Separate heads of passing in theory and project in the subject of Foundation Course.

• Completion of Assessment and Moderation of answer books and Declaration of results

within 30 days.

• Lamination of Mark sheets.

• Preparation of Question Banks, Marking Schemes and Synoptic answers.

• Provision of Photo Copy and Revaluation of answer books.

• Formation of Unfair Means Enquiry Committee as per the University guidelines.

6. Candidates qualified: NET/SET/GATE etc. :- Nil

7. Initiative towards faculty development programme:

Mr. N. N. Varade has been relieved to participate in Refresher Course in

Mathematics sponsored by U.G.C. and conducted by the Academic Staff College,

University of Mumbai. Besides this, teachers who were eligible for career advancement

benefits have been given the same by following the due statutory procedure.

• ‘Naadi Pariksha Shibir’ in association with Sri Ravi Shankar’s Trust of Art of Living,

Thane Centre on 1st December, 2010.

23rd November, 2010.

• Workshop on ‘Women and Gender’ by Sakhya, an NGO on 18th August 2010.

Principal Dr. P. M. Karkhele was invited for an interactive Talk Show on T.V. Sahyadri

Doordarshan (DD-I) on the topic ‘Higher Education and its Challenges in Future’ on

3rd April, 2011.

The Institution generates its funds through its Extension activities such as NSS by selling

flags made by mentally challenged children and through Snehankit Centre by selling

‘Rakhis’ made by visually challenged children.

18. Community services:

A. National Service Scheme:

• Plantation of 300 saplings behind Kalsekar College, Mumbra on 24th July, 2010.

• Adopted the Special Children from St. John School, Thane.

• N.S.S. volunteers participated time to time in the “Pulse Polio Immunization”

organized by C.R.Wadia Health Centre, Thane between 9th August and

14th December, 2010.

• N.S.S. volunteers participated in the “Peace March” organized by Bombay

Sarvodaya Mandal on 6th August, 2010 and pledged to make the world atom bomb

free.

• N.S.S. volunteers paid the respect to the Nation on the occasion of Independence

Day and Republic Day at the Flag Hoisting ceremony.

• Volunteers helped Thane Traffic Police to control traffic and guide devotees during

Ganapati immersion procession in the month of August.

• The inaugural function of Red Ribbon Club was held on 22nd September, 2010.

• NSS volunteers participated in 5- Day Civil Defence Training at Smt. Jankibai

Rajaram Salvi College, Kalwa from 27th to 31st October, 2010.

• N.S.S. Unit organized “Blood Donation Camp” on the occasion of Birthday of

Dr. Nanjibhai Khimjibhai Thakkar, President of our Society. 75 bottles of blood

were collected. The Blood Donation Camp was organized in collaboration with

C.R.Wadia Health Centre, Thane on 23rd September, 2010.

• 03 Volunteers attended the Leadership Camp at Badlapur from 15th to 19th

September, 2010.

• Mr. Sujit Singh attended the selection camp for State Republic Day Celebrations.

B. Department of Lifelong Learning and Extention (DLLE)

From academic year 2009-10, our institution has introduced an Extension work under

the University of Mumbai’s Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension (DLLE). It

is heartening to note that in this year, the institution enrolled 119 student volunteers

under this programme.

The DLLE unit of the college has undertaken the following activities:

i. Information Technology Project (ITP) –

• The project is designed to highlight the importance of knowledge about information

technology.

• Students visit the relevant websites and collect information on the selected topic and

prepare a booklet incorporating the information collected.

• The project familiarises students with the use of computers and internet.

ii. Survey of Women’s Status (SWS) –

• Students collect information on the status of women in the age group 18 to 35

through a questionnaire and analyse it according to the key provided.

• The project is useful to students as it gives them confidence to go out in society and

talk to people.

iii. Training and guidance:

• The Extension Teachers attended training sessions conducted by the University of

Mumbai.

• The DLLE field co-coordinator conducted training sessions for student volunteers at

the beginning of each term.

• Ms. Rajashree Raut from R. J. College, Ghatkoper has been appointed as a Field

Co-ordinator for our college to impart training to student volunteers.

C. Snehankit ( Centre for visually Challenged ):

• The centre caters to the needs of the visually challenged students from nearby areas.

• The centre provides readers, writers and translators to the visually challenged.

• Total number of volunteers registered this year is 75.

• 15 students volunteered as readers for Prof. Saynekar of K.V. Pendharkar College,

Dombivali.

• 30 students volunteered for various exams in different Colleges while 25 students

did typing work.

• Volunteers collected money for NAB by selling bags made by visually challenged

students.

• Guest Lecture by Prof. Shyam Saynekar was arranged on 10th January, 2011.

19. Teachers and officers newly recruited:

• Ms. J. V. Kulkarni has been appointed as Coordinator, Study Centre, Yashwantrao

Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nasik.

• The necessary numbers of faculties, as per the need, have been recruited on CHB.

The staff appointed for unaided courses has been paid additional remuneration.

• Ms.Hemanshi Mansukhani has been appointed as Full Time Lecturer in

Accountancy.

• Ms. Siya Makhija and Ms. Nivedita Mukharjee have been appointed as Full Time

Lecturers in B. M. S.

• Ms. Pooja Khadse and Ms. Yogita Patil have been appointed as Full Time Lecturer

B.Sc. (IT).

• Ms.V.R. Choudhari has been appointed as Lecturer in Marathi on CHB basis.

• Mr. H.R. Gadge has been appointed as Coach for sports activities.

• Three Clerks, Two Peons and Two Sweepers have been recruited.

metal book-racks and special cabins for Advanced Learners, Faculty members and

Librarian.

• Library also issues sets of Text Books to the E.B.C. and Physically Challenged

students.

27. Technology up gradation:

• Internet and LAN Facility in staff common room, computer laboratory, library and

administrative office.

• Library is computerized with SOUL software.

• Up gradation of Examination software for result processing as per the changes

made by the University.

• Admission Module Software in administrative office.

28. Computer and internet access and training to teachers and students:

College is having Air Conditioned Computer laboratory. The laboratory is open for

conducting the Practical in the subject of Computer System and Applications for

T.Y.B.Com., B.M.S., B.Sc. (IT) and B.Com. (B&I) Students. The Laboratory is also

available for students who participate in different Workshops, Seminars for making

power point presentation. Internet access is given to students in Computer Laboratory

and the Central Library for preparing projects. Internet and LAN Facility is available in

staff common room, computer laboratory, library and administrative office.

29. Financial aid to students:

Students have been financially assisted by the informal ‘staff welfare fund’. Financial

aid was given to needy students at the time of admission and also on other occasions.

Six students of the college were given financial assistance of Rs.18, 050. The members

of the staff, members of the ex-students association and other well-wishers voluntarily

Contributed for the same.

30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association:

Various committees and ex-students’ association (ANVAY), invite well placed alumni to

the college to guide the current students in their field of expertise. Apart from visiting the

college, some ex- students have visited the N. S. S. camp and some of them have also

provided financial help to current students.

31. Activities and support from the Parents’ –Teachers’ Association:

Parents-Teachers association caters to the need of having a healthy interaction

between the parents and teachers. The association informed the parents about the

performance of their wards.

• A survey of parents was conducted to get an insight regarding their opinion

about teaching, library, administration, discipline, infrastructure, canteen, etc.

• Parents meetings were held on 8th August and 19th December 2010.

32. Health services:

The Health Services and Welfare Schemes Unit of the College is formed to provide health

related assistance and services to the students, teachers as well as administrative staff of

the College, either free of cost or at concessional rate.

• A ‘naadi-pariksha’ Shibir was held in collaboration with Sri Ravi Shankar Trust of Art

of Living on 1st December 2010.

• A Talk was arranged on ‘Stress Management’ in association with Swami Vivekananda

Kendra, Thane on 28th January, 2011.

33. Performance in Sports Activities:

The Gymkhana Committee undertakes various sports activities. Although there is no

provision of appointing Physical Director in the colleges affiliated to the University.

Institution appoints Coach to promote and encourage the students.

• Mr. Ajayan Menon and Mr. Tejas Maru were selected as Secretary and

Joint- Secretary respectively.

• An inter-collegiate Volleyball tournament was organized on 23rd September, 2010.

• Students were sent for chess, carom, table tennis, football, cricket, volleyball,

kabaddi, tug-of-war, taekwondo, badminton, for University and other inter-

collegiate events.

• Mr. Ajinkya Bhosale bagged the 1st prize in Carom tournament and Mr. Mahesh

Kudwa & team bagged the Tug-of-War Trophy in inter-collegiate tournaments

conducted by IFEEL College, Lonawala.

• Mr. Mahesh Kudwa and team bagged the runners-up trophy in Tug-of –War event at

Gandharv, 2011. Inter-Collegiate tournament conducted by B.N. Bandodkar

College, Thane.

• Mr. Akram Shaikh and team won runners-up place at inter-collegiate volleyball

tournament organized by Pragati College, Dombivali.

• Ms. Daljeet Kaur bagged the 4th rank in Judo competition (45 to 52 kg) organized

by University of Mumbai.

• Indoor Games Tournament was conducted in carom, Chess, Table Tennis and

Badminton on 6th to 11th December, 2011.

• Annual Athletic Meet was conducted along with inter-class Cricket Tournament on

14th December, 2011.

34. Incentives to outstanding sportspersons:

Outstanding sportspersons are awarded by giving trophies such as –

• ‘Best Sports Man’ and ‘Best Sports Woman’ for the year.

• Ms. Daljeet Kaur who has won at the University Level Competitions has been given

the benefit of 10 grace marks in final examination as per the University Ordinance

• Mr. Ajayan Menon, Gymkhana Secretary was awarded Principal’s Special Award as

Best Student of the College.

• 4 prestigious prizes were awarded as Best Organizer (Male) Mr. Ajayan Menon

(S.Y.B.Com.), Best Organizer (Female) Ms. Daljeet Kaur (F.Y.B.M.S.), Best

awarded to Mr. Jitendra Vanjara (S.Y.B.Com.)

• Smt. Dhanlaxmiben Nanjibhai Thakkar Thanawala Award for Best Female Student

was awarded to Ms. Vishakha Gadkari (T.Y.B.Com.)

• Shri Maganbhai Khimjibhai Thakkar Award for the Best Organizer was awarded to

Mr. Akram Shaikh (T.Y.B.Com.)

• Principal’s Special Awards for Best Students were given to Mr. Shrikant Chauhan

(S.Y.B.Com.) and Mr. Ajayan Menon (S.Y.B.Com.).

36. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling unit:

The counseling cell offers solace to students who have some adjustment problem or those

who are experiencing confusion, indecision, feeling of helplessness and hopelessness.

37. Placement services provided to students:

• The Career Guidance and Placement Cell of the College organized various

seminars and workshops on topics such as – A Guidance lecture on “Preparing for

MPSC Examination” by Ms. Sonam Patil a Ex-student of our College on 11th

August, 2010.

• Guidance lecture on “Preparation of MBA examination” by Centre for Management

Institute for B.M.S. students on 9th September, 2010.

• Guidance lecture on “Career in IT Industry” by Karox Technology was arranged for

B. Sc. (IT) students on 28th September, 2010.

• Guest lecture on “Career options in BPO and KPO" by DMAX Solutions was

arranged on 3rd December, 2010.

• Campus Interview was conducted for the placement in the field BPO and KPO by

DMAX Solutions on 4th December, 2010.

38. Development programmes for non – teaching staff: Department of Mathematics and Statistics organized a computer training programme for

the administrative staff on the topic ‘computer competencies in office administration’ on

16th October, 2010.

39. Healthy practices of the institutions-

• The institution provides academic flexibility by providing core and elective options

at T. Y. B. A. /B. Com.

• Student’s feedback is taken and analyzed every year and the necessary steps are

initiated.

• Financial assistance of Rs.18,050 was provided from the Staff Welfare Fund

towards the payment of fees to the students seeking education.

• Faculties of the College namely Prin. Dr. P. M. Karkhele (Moderator), Ms. D. P.

Sawant are the members of the Panel of Examiners for Competitive Examinations.

• The institution gives preference to the wards of the staff interested in higher

education.

• The College has Students’ Grievance Cell to entertain the suggestions and

complaints made by the students.

• College has Students’ Insurance Cell, Canteen Committee, Students’ Counseling

Centre, Students’ Grievance Redressal Cell, Suggestion Boxes, Career Guidance

and Placement Cell to ensure their welfare.

• The College has Stock Verification Committees for Library and other assets of the

College.

• The Library has started ‘Advanced Learner -Book Bank Scheme’ and ‘Reader Club’

during the year.

• Support services to overseas students are provided in form of counseling and

Placement guidance.

• The college encourages and helps in developing entrepreneurial skills among

students by organizing guidance lectures by various Departments and committees.

Departments undertake programmes that benefit students in their overall development. Department of Commerce:

• Intensive coaching for advanced learners in the subject of Advertising, Commerce-I

and Commerce-II was given.

• Remedial teaching is given to weak students.

• Class tests were conducted for F.Y., S.Y. and T.Y. B.Com. students. The Case

Studies, Project Work, Presentations and Viva-Voce of students were held as per

guidelines given by the University.

• Case Studies were discussed and students were assessed on the basis of their

performance as a part of the syllabus.

• Students were asked to complete Home assignments in the subject of

Advertising, Commerce Paper I and II. Question banks were provided in various

subjects for improvement of performance of the students in examination.

Department of Psychology:

• Students of F.Y.B.A. were asked to write an assignment on the topic “What makes

me happy”. This topic is selected to make students introspect to find out what makes

them happy and satisfied with life. It makes them realize how simple and small

things make life meaningful.

• T.Y. B.Com. students were given home assignments.

• Question banks were given to students of psychology paper I, II and III and

Psychology of Human Behavior at Work.

Department of Sociology:

• Students of T.Y.B.A. submitted their projects and gave power point presentations on

various women oriented topics.

• The result of T.Y.B.A. (Sociology) is 96.8% in University Examination.

Department of Accountancy:

• Practical approach for Project work has been incorporated and accordingly

presentation, viva voce related to Direct and Indirect Taxation has been undertaken.

• The syllabus of subject aims at sensitizing students towards the need of

• Ms. D. P. Sawant prepared Study Material for S.Y.B.A. Paper III (Indian Economy)
