The Deity form of the Supreme Lord is called 'archa vigraha'. The Supreme Lord comes in this form very mercifully to receive the services lovingly offered by His devotees. A common man or sometimes even a proud so-called learned scholar with blunt senses may wonder whether a portrait made of stone or wood or metal can understand our worship or prayers or bhoga offerings. Installation Festival of Sri Sri Radha Vrindavanchandra, Sri Sri Gaura Nitai and Sri Sri Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra

The first day activities involve Shilpi Dosa Snanam, Netronmilanam, Vandapanam and Sayanadhivasa. As it is evident from the name, in ‘Shilpi Dosa Snanam’ ceremony the deities are purified from dosas (offences) incurred during their sculpting or during their storage and transportation. It is a private ceremony performed in the inner quarters of the sanctum sanctorum.

The first public darshan of their Lordships takes place during “Netronmilinam”. It is first time when the eager devotees get to see the Lord and also the first time when merciful Lord open the eyes and shower merciful glance on the devotees. Many auspicious items like chamara, Swastik, Srimad Bhagavatam,

On February 24th, 2013 Pune will witness the most awaited installation of Sri Sri Radha Vrindavan Chandra, Sri Sri Gaur Nitai and Sri Sri Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra. The installation festival is a sacred ceremony in which the pure devotee of the Lord invites Him to appear as the Deity in order to reciprocate with the devotional service rendered by His devotees. The scriptures mention - The Deity form of the Lord is said to appear in eight varieties: stone, wood, metal, earth, paint, sand, the mind or jewels. (SB 11.27.12) With regards to deity installation in Brahma-Madhava-Gaudiya Sampradaya, the roots could be traced back to the time of Srila Madhavendra Puri when he installed the deity of Gopal on top of Govardhana Hill.

Continuing the same tradition, Srila Prabhupada in recent times had installed Radha-Krishna & Gaur-Nitai in all major cities of Europe and America.

The pre-installation ceremony or ‘Vastu Homa’ involves worshipping of Vastu-purusha who is a great devotee in-charge of Vastu (any house or building). Prayers are offerered and Yajna is performed. The ceremony primarily involves removal of vastu-dosas, offering of gratitude to Mother Earth for allowing us to build this beautiful temple and invocation of Lord Vishwaksena and other demigods like Varuna etc.

Bhagavad Gita, Chaitanya Charitamrita, cows are offered. This is followed by “Vandapanam” in which again 27 sacred items are shown to the Lord in order to create auspiciousness. These include Ganges mud, Rice Paddy, Gold, Silver, Sandalwood etc.

After offering the sacred items, the “Sayanadhivasa” (resting in the bed) invokes the spirit of sleep into the Deity for invoking presence of the Lord as well as the ability to bestow auspiciousness on the devotees. “Adhivasa” in general refers purificatory ceremonies that may be performed for the Deities, for purifying the eight gross and subtle material elements.

The second day begins with a private ceremony of tying up of all the 10 directions known as the “Dig Vandanam” followed by “Dwarapal Puja” in which all different gatekeepers (e.g., Jaya-Vijaya) of different gates are invited. Then there is “Mandapa-Sthapanam” which involves setting up and decoration of the Mandapam where the Lord would arrive for abhishekam. Banana plantains, Mango leaves, bel leaves, flower garlands, flags and festoons are some of the items used in decoration. These all ceremonies are held before waking up of the Lord.

As the Lord is woken up in “Jagran Seva”, 17 items like padyam, arghyam etc are offered and “Nyasa Homa” is performed in which the different limbs are awakened by touching kusa grass

accompanied by chanting of mantras. Then after offering 16 upacaras to the Lord there is Grand “Mahabhishek” ceremony. An exquisite Shringar Darshan then follows in which their Lordships are gorgeously dressed.

The entire Installation festival will be presided by HH Bhakti Vidyapurna Maharaj from holy place Sridham Mayapur and his team of Gurukul students who have the experience of many installations and yajnas in ISKCON temples including that of the famous “Mayapur Panchatattva Installation”.

May I offer my respectful obeisances and felicitations to Lord Srinivasa, residing on Mount Venkatachala, the Lord and consort of Lakshmi, Who is a mine of blessed and adorable qualities and the solace to the poor and lowly.Lord Srinivasa, famously known as Lord Balaji has been worshipped in the Sheshadri Hills since he first appeared to pacify Mother Lakshmi who was angry at the offence of Bhrigu Muni. Mother Lakshmi performed Tapasya at the holy land of Kolhapur. Just 230 km to the north of Kolhapur is Pune where Lord Venkateshwara is going to be installed in an elaborate 14-day festival starting on 11th of February, 2013. The ceremony begins with “Vishwaksena Puja” on the evening of 11th Feb. Vishwaksena is said to be the chief of the army (of the Lord) and is believed to protect the function or ritual from evil. At the Tirupati temple in Tirumala, during the daily worship of Lord Venkateswara, the garlands and flowers (called  nirmalya) from the deity are removed and Vishwaksena is worshipped with them.“Adhivasam” will be performed on the 12th and 13th. In a ceremony that’s aimed at purifying the eight gross and subtle material elements, Lord Balaji will be immersed in water (Jaladhivasam), precious gems (Murtika - Adhivasam), milk (Kshira - Adhivasam), Panchagavya (Panchagavya - Adhivasam), rice paddy (Dhanyadhivasa) followed by Shyanadhivasa and “Kalasha Sthapanam” on the 14th.Various yajnas (havanams) for Lord venkateshwara, Mother Lakshmi, Lord Sri Rama, Lord Narsimhadev, Lord Vasudev, Lord Hayagriva, Sudarshan Chakra and Sun-god shall be performed from the 15th to 22nd for creating auspiciousness, bestowing benedictions and removing impediments. Then , “Mahapurnahuti” on 23rd marks the end of all yajnas which entails offering of navaratnas, navadhanyas and other sacred items. On the last day i.e., on 24th, “Kalyana Utsavam,” the marriage celebration of Lord Balaji and Sridevi and Bhudevi is held. In fact, all sacrifices which cannot be seen within the precincts of Lord Balaji temple during Brahmotsavam or other festivals can be witnessed during this glorious Installation festival. The devotees and people in general can participate in the “Archanam Mahotsavam”. With Sri Vaishnava priests presiding over the entire ceremony, the upcoming temple at Katraj will reverberate with chants of ‘Govinda’ which echo in the Seven Hills of Tirumala.

Better than giving horses in charity is giving elephants, and better than giving elephants is giving land. But better than giving land is the giving of sesame seeds, and better than that is giving of gold. Still better than giving gold is giving Prasad – for all forefathers, Demi Gods (Devas) and human beings become satisfied by eating Prasad. Thus there is no better gift of charity than this in the past, present and future.Ekadashi Mahatmya
