Zack Cornelissen is a 24 year old in college getting a degree in business. He spends money very sparingly and likes to protect what he has. Zack just got a new phone and wants an easy way to protect it. He wants something that can fit on his phone easy and is very light weight.

When designing an accessory one must understand exactly what it is that they are being asked to design/build. For this project the customer wants a sleek design that will fit their phone in a tight fit that does not take up much room. So something that they might be looking for is a rubber case which allows the user to use the case and not have any obstructions to the use.

1) Understand

When looking for options to create a product it can be helpful to look at some other possible designs that have been created before. These were some of the potential designs that I found that were similar to what I was looking to make.

When making a new item it is easy to get caught up in the project and start to design extra pieces that are unneeded so it is important to tell what it is that you are making. In this case the case that I am designing is supposed to be a simple and slim case that will have no added pieces that could bulk the phone up to large sizes. It also must be an easy case to manipulate to take off and reattach.

3) Define

When starting to design a product it is important to write down the ideas that you have because even when the design itself is not used, you may take part of that design and use it in your final product.

4) Ideate

The prototype of the case although was still an idea was starting to become what it was destined to be in the end. There is no physical prototype, however I did take the design options to the customer to see which design it was that they had liked best, or if multiple cases needed to be combined to take the best of each.

5) Prototype

After the review with the customer, which was mentioned in the previous slide, it was more clear what was wanted. The customer wanted an open feel with the case, but still wanted protection on three sides of the phone and the back. The one side that was to be left open was the bottom leaving access for cords and the speakers to be allowed to play without obstruction.

6) Refine

The solution to all of the designs and what the costumer ultimately desired was a rubber case that had an entirely open bottom face. However on top on the front and along the bottom is a solid strip of rubber that still allows the home button to be pressed and still be held in place. The fit all the way around has a rubber seal that will fit tight so that the phone does not slip out however the lip can be lifted off the edge to allow it to slip through without too much effort.

7) Solution

The new IPhone 5 is the phone that my client needs a case for, the case has to be a light weight case that can be put on and taken off with ease. This can be accomplished by making the case rubber so that it will bend around the edge to be taken off, and because it is rubber it will be a light weight material so that it will also be light.

The case fits around the phone very closely with no lip around the edge but rather a cover at the bottom so that the phone slides down and out of the case making it less likely to tear if you have to take the phone out.

This case is not like most other cases, it does not have a lip around the top to hold it in, it is a smaller design that form fits to the phone and has a strip of the case that goes over the home button to help hold the phone in place. It also has a hole for the built in speakers so it doesn’t effect the sound quality also it has easy access for use of buttons on the rest of the phone.
