Organized Chaos

CES is like Christmas for the Lab team. We love it. We are on the ground the day before the show opens, running around in an organized frenzy, scouting out new technologies that excite and inspire us. We then gather back at our "war room" on the edge of the convention center to pitch why our findings should be featured on our client tours. Once agreed, we stay up all night mapping our tour (3 miles!*) through the convention center.

50 miles*on foot (each). 19 tours later. We bring you our 10 highlights from CES 2013.

An obsession with battery power dominated at CES, in the form of solar charged batteries (Goal Zero), spare batteries with a 6 month charge (Datexx By Teledex) and disposable fuel cells (Nectar).

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) was there to remind us of its wireless power standard Qi. Fulton Innovations demonstrated the potential of Qi, with a wirelessly charged tablet that can charge your smartphone. Soon we willnever have to look another power socket in the eye again. Bring it on.

2. The ‘Internet of Things’ Becomes a Reality

For some time connected devices have been rather fanciful curiosities, but this year we saw the notion become real and provide true real everyday utility.

We spent much time at an unsuspecting booth called Apps Power, which connects ‘dumb’ devices simply by plugging them into an Apps Power power strip. Once plugged into the strip, your phone can be paired via Bluetooth or NFC; so you can automatically turn devices on and off as you move around the house.

3. From Natural To Anticipatory*

We saw natural user interfaces evolve from simply being able to process our needs quickly and easily, to actually anticipating our needs before we’re even aware of what they might be.

Samsung’s S-Recommendation engine proactively suggests what to watch on TV; and Tobii’s Rex eye tracking system - a dongle that can turn any Windows 8 machine into an eye-controlled device- gets you to where you need to be on a webpage before you’ve consciously thought of it.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Anticipatory computing will be the trend to watch for years to come.

4. The Kickstarter Effect*

For the first time, Kickstarter products rubbed shoulders with the big boys at CES; and picked up a few coveted prizes along the way.

We were reminded that unlike new product launches from big brand manufacturers, Kickstarter products which consumers have already paid for such as the Pebble Watch already have guaranteed success.

Other Kickstarter favorites included iSmartAlarm, a home alarm system that you control via your iPhone and Simply Amplified, which makes 3D printed smartphone amplifiers.

5. Content Goes Shopping*

With Samsung’s new T-Commerce platform, consumers can now shop the shows that they are watching, uninterrupted.

With Samsung’s “Shop The Shows” app purchase as they watch, as demonstrated by a Samsung exec who bought an outfit during an episode of Gossip Girl.

With innovations like these, the purchase funnel has all but disappeared, giving consumers the ability to convert inspiration to purchase in a matter of minutes.

6. Ultra High Definition is the Future of TV

The industry has finally recognized that a better way to emulate the depth and ‘realness’ of reality is not through 3DTV, but with higher definition TV.

Every major manufacturer showcased their Ultra High Definition (4K) TVs, which are 4X the resolution of current (1080p) HD. This sets us on a clear trajectory towards the actual Future of TV, which is all about 8K. You only had to look at Sharp’s 85’ 8K TV to believe it.

7. Putting Mobile in Automobile

The mobile form-factor got larger at CES this year, with the automobile taking center stage.

Six of the top ten auto manufacturers showcased their own mobile-esque app ecosystems, including Ford which launched its own developer platform.

Meanwhile, Pioneer’s in-dash app ecosystem is paving the way for brands to enter this new media capsule, with apps such as iHeart and Waze announced at the show.

8. The Rise of Chinese Brands

How many Chinese brands could you name before CES? Chance are not many, as they’ve to date been known mainly as manufacturers.

But at CES 2013, Chinese brands were out in full force, starting with Hisense. China’s biggest electronics brand took over Microsoft’s vacated showroom real estate, making its presence felt.

Their chief scientist said: "We are prepared. We are ready. We will succeed.” Expect to see Chinese brands becoming US household names before long.

9. 3D Printing gets Enterprising

3D printing is permeating every industry:

Stratasys makes prototypes for F500 companies, including the custom cover for the Microsoft Surface, as well as Iron Man’s armor and Superman’s cape.

We saw white label operations like 3D Systems, providing custom printing opportunities for brands like Orange France, whose customers create 3D artifacts of their physical movements throughout a city.

Meanwhile, Cubify lets consumers develop and personalize their own versions of licensed brand merchandise. Who doesn’t want a Captain Kirk figurine with your own face on it?

10. Innovation is Alive

Displair is a multi-touch interactive computer monitor made of nothing but touchable air.

It projects a computer image on a thin stream of air infused with water vapor. Using infrared sensors and gesture technology, a user can navigate the screen simply by touching the air. Like magic.

Displair was one of the great examples of startup innovation, which featured in our “Startups” tour in the Venetian.
