OutcastThe Repressed People of AsiaPhotographs by Jakob Carlsen

“The black-and-white photographs . . . are haunting.” —Wall Street Journal

Based on the author’s own travels, these internationally awarded photo-essays

comment on the caste social system in India, where a citizen is discriminated

against based on class and occupation. The accompanying images symbolize

everyday life for the dalits—the “untouchables” of Bangladesh, India, Nepal,

and Pakistan—who comprise one-fifth of the population and are regarded as

unclean and unfit for society. This collection illustrates the caste system’s conse-

quences for those on the bottom of the social hierarchy, depicting the shocking

living conditions, daily humiliation, segregation, violence, and general hope-

lessness they constantly endure. Contending that this segment of the people are

still being denied basic human rights, this document strives to prove that Indian society and religion are suppressing the

weak and forsaken while building wealth and progress upon their labor.

Jakob Carlsen is an acclaimed photojournalist. He is a recipient of the Danish Press Photographer of the Year award and

Pictures of the Year International’s World Understanding Award.

Anthony CraggDinge im Kopf/

Things on the MindEdited by Walter Smerling

For the first time, this retrospective unveils the

oeuvre of world-renowned sculptor Anthony

Cragg. Detailed illustrations of 60 sculptures from

the past four decades along with drawings and

diagrams provide insight into his artistic devel-

opment, from the early installations created from

objets trouvés and the lathed forms of the 1990s

right up to his most recent works. While explor-

ing a variety of materials, this study intriguingly

demonstrates how Cragg’s works delve into the

human capacity to give internal perceptions and

ideas an externally visible form. The artist’s

many distinct periods are illustrated, contending

that their shared appeal stems from the energy

released in his sculptures as well as the cryptic

irony they suggest. Featuring an article penned

by Cragg himself, this volume also contains a

selection of scholarly essays and a revealing

interview with the artist, all providing a deeper

look into his accomplishments. This bilingual

edition includes English and German.

Walter Smerling is the chairman of the Founda-

tion for Art and Culture in Bonn, the director of

the Center for Modern and Contemporary Art in

Duisburg, and the artistic director of Foundation

Salzburg. He is the author of Bernar Venet and

Desert Images: Mapping

Lawrence of ArabiaEdited by Klaus Schneider

Following the artist’s travels to Jordan

and Syria on the trail of T. E.

Lawrence—better known as Lawrence

of Arabia—this exploration recaptures

the sites of the Arab revolt against the

Ottoman Empire. Vivid photographs of

abstract sandy deserts, imposing

mountain ranges, and bizarre rock

formations provide an impression of

the northern Arabian peninsula’s

overwhelming desert scenery. Depict-

ing a visualization of how the

“Lawrence of Arabia” myth is reflected in the landscape, this artistic confrontation with the desert resurrects a part of the

Orient’s history, the consequences of which are still palpable in the Middle East today. This bilingual edition includes English

and German.
