The VisionThe vision of the proposed product is to be the most useful, creative, and comforting

    carpal tunnel syndrome prevention treatment.

The MissionThe mission of the proposed product is to decrease carpal tunnel syndrome risks to thecomputer users.

    Executive Summary

IntroductionAs each day computer usage rapidly increases, many health problems suffered by

computer users become hot topics worldwide. One of the most popular issues today is

carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a syndrome where hand and wrist suffer numbness or

tingling because of excessive pressure on a key nerve in the wrist. The factor that contributes to this syndrome is still debated internationally but it has

great possibility that it is occurred by repetitive and forceful motion of hand or wrist.

In this case, computer users that intensively use mouse and keyboard are highly risky

to suffer carpal tunnel syndrome. Roquelaure study in 2008 shows that 50% of clerical

workers are highly risk to suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Seeing this issue as a business opportunity, the product that is proposed is basically

designed to be a prevention therapy of carpal tunnel syndrome. The idea is to produce

a comfortable and fashionable carpal tunnel syndrome prevention therapy wristband.

This product can be very beneficial in this perfect momentum as the issue is growing

while there has been no further specific effort to improve the medical preventiontherapy of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Proposed Product ConceptThe product proposed is based on the nature of

the posture of humans hand and wrist. It is

designed to keep the neutral posture of hand and

wrist in order to prevent any excessive pressure

exposure in hand and wrist while doing any carpal

tunnel syndrome factors. The design highlights

    medical therapy, comfort, and fashion.

Description of Product ConceptThe basic idea of this product is to comfort the hand and the wrist of the customers

while doing a repetitive and forceful motion such as typing with keyboard, using

mouse and writing. The product has a form of half-glove half-wristband, which means

it covers the palm and the wrist without covering fingers. As a relaxant of the hand

and the wrist, we design to use stuffed sponge covering the lower part of the wrist and

the sides of the wrist. By using this sponge, the customers can write, use keyboard and

    mouse with comfort.

Target Customers or MarketThe target customer of this product is computer users in teenagers to adults group

ages. For examples, teacher, office worker, gamers, students.

    Balancing the Portfolio

Since our project strategy is customer focus, the portfolio involves market attractiveness

dimension to analyze the portfolio of the project. In this mapping approach, the

portfolio is plotted along two specific dimensions: the extent to which the project

involves a change in the product line and the extent to which the project involves a

change in production process. The size of circles indicates the relative market

attractiveness of the development project. By using this matrix, we discover that the

market attractiveness is very high in Breakthrough Development.

5.Reflect on the Results and the Process

Is diverse set of product opportunities?

Glomoves is a product in therapeutically area. The diversity of product is not quite an

opportunities. Based on our opportunity statements, our focus is on the effectivenessof this product.

Does the product plan support the competitive strategy of the firm?

Absolutely yes, Glomovesproduct plan is just not a plan how to produce it, but also

we improve our product buy testing the product itself directly into our market.

Because our strategy is based on customers satisfaction, this interaction between

our company to the customer who use our product is very important

Are the total resources allocated to product development sufficient to pursue the

    firms competitive strategy?

Our resources are sufficient. Our resources are very complete. It is very flexible to any

change of plan or change of product design cause of product development. Our

project manager will manage the feedback from customer, and product manager

response to the feedback, then QA and QC concern about the policies regarding this

feedback, and last process manager will implement this feedback of product to

change the process to make a developed one product.

Does the core team accept the challenges of the resulting mission statement?

Core team does accept the challenges of resulting mission statement. We are ready

for making a new innovation of therapeutically treatment especially for CTS Sufferer.

  • 8/10/2019 Ipdd Report

    17/42

Are the elements of the mission statement consistent?

Yes, very consistent. Our opportunities are based on our mission statement, which is

making a therapeutic treatment to be comfortable, and prevent people of CTS.

Are the assumptions listed in the mission statement really necessary or is the project

overconstrained? Will the development team have the freedom to develop the best

    possible product?

Yes, very important. These assumptions are our constraints. The development team

at some aspect will not have the freedom to develop, because the development itself

based on medical issue which is the most important part.

How can the product planning process be improved?

Our product planning can be improved by reviewing the feedback of our product,

which is we have to conduct a survey on order to know customersfeedback. From

those feedbacks we can review our product and develop the product also develop

some specific product planning regarding to the product development and processes.

    Product Architecture

Glomoves is an armrest wristband used to help the sufferers of CTS (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome). It is

in the shape of a fingerless glove with a pad on the area of the wrist for support.

    I. Architecture

The architecture we are using for Glomoves is the modular architecture; there are only two

chunks for this product, which is a glove and a pad. The functions are :

    1. Glove : Works as a retainer for the wrist so it doesnt bend oddly.

    2.

Pad : Support for the wrist.

Each of the chunks has single function and has clear interaction with each other, as being sewn

onto one another connects both chunks.

    III. Geometric Layout

The layout of Glomoves is simple as it only has two chunks. The pad is located under the

glove, while the glove will cover the hand-wrist area of the user.

    IV. Interaction

The interaction of the Glomove is fairly simple, the fundamental interactionis the usage of

the user to the glove, and later the interaction of the pad towards the surface in which it is

    leaning on.

The incidental interactionwith the product though is the stretching of the glove with the

users hand. When the product is new, the elastic bands are still tight, therefore when using

the product for the first time, automatically it will cause stretching, though if there are

significant size differences, the user might force their hands to the item, possibly causing the

    bands to strain.

    V. Platform Planning

The customers aimed are mostly computer users ranging from students to office workers, andthe design of Glomoves is to also be a casual wear that people can use anytime. The

differentiation planis between students or young adults to office workers/adults.

The difference are mostly the style and size, adults being bigger and has a minimalistic,

simple and compact style; while the students is more stylish with various colors and a smaller

    size.

students pad uses a foam pad covered with Busa ati, therefore making it thinner and more

versatile as with it being stylish, the adults uses the Bra-cuppad, making it more durable

and work better for the support.

    INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

    Industrial Design Assessments

Before processing the industrial design, we assess the ergonomic needs and aesthetic needs to see the

importance of industrial design in our product. This assessment is important in decision making in our

    investment.

Needs Level of Importance Explanation of Rating

    Ergonomics

    Ease of use

As a hand-wrist support, ease of use is essential. It may be

used in many routine activities, may not interfering the

    activities.

    Ease of maintenance

Important as it may be used daily. Glomoves need to keep

clean, soft, and flexible to assure the comfort-ability of theusage.

User interactions There is only one user-interaction; wearing the Glomoves, but

it is important since it has direct interaction with the user.

    Novelty of user

    interactions

The solution of user interaction is implied in the design and

form of the product; fit-to-hand design, smooth, flexible and

    breathable fabrics.

  • 8/10/2019 Ipdd Report

    28/42

    Safety

There is almost none safety issue as Glomoves is an apparel

product. However, it is important for the customers to

acknowledge in which activities Glomoves should not be used.

    Aesthetics

    Product differentiation

There are already many hand-wrist support products in the

market and since it is apparel product, its appearance is

    crucial.

    Pride of ownership,

    fashion, or image

As a daily-use-apparel-product, Glomoves had to be attractive.

It is attended to be not only a wrist support but also a fashion

    accessory.

Team motivation Design of the Glomoves is crucial for inspiring the team and

motivate the team to market it.

Based on the needs assessment, it can be concluded that Industrial Design has important role in

Glomoves. Both ergonomics and aesthetic aspects are needed in the product to support its primary

    function and market the product.

    Industrial Design Processes

    Industrial Design Management

Industrial design that is involved in the Glomoves development process is classified as User-Driven

Product. As the core profiles of a User-Driven Product is derived from the functionality of its interface

and its aesthetic appeal, thus Glomoves has high degree user interface to those requirements as a User-

    Driven Product.

As a User-Drive Products, Glomoves is easy to use, as it has a design that can performed easily to wear

it, how to wear Glomoves is just like wearing any other gloves, just slide into it with the pad is placed

under the palm. Glomoves reach from young-adults to adults. Moreover, it also reaches for quite broad

range of people, from students to professionals.

  • 8/10/2019 Ipdd Report

    32/42

The products external appearance is important to differentiate between the products. Glomoves has

several design of color that each of its customer can choose that suit their background. For example, as

for the students they can choose colorful bright color, for professional women they might prefer beige

neutral color to bright color, and for professional men they might choose darker color way for classy

appearance. The colors that Glomoves offer also have to create pride for the customer to have one of

    the products.

Even though, there is no sophisticated technology to differentiate each Glomoves product, it still needs

engineering role for the technical features/requirements that is often already established at the

beginning. Thus the development team can focuses on the user aspects of the product.

    Industrial Design Quality Assessment

    User Interface Quality

The product is relatively easy to use. To wear the product is simply to wear it like any other glove, using

it is also fairly direct, as all a user need to do is place their wrist to work (with mouse, writing, or even

resting). The pad will support the wrist and user only need to do their intended duties.

Because the product is apparel, a majority of the material used is soft fabrics. Therefore safe and has

very little possibility of injury caused by the product itself. The product has also considered different

type of customers, though mostly focused on its original concept in being an arm wrest wristband to

help sufferers of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CST). A casual wear for those who wishes to prevent, or use

for a wrist support is also available and normally simpler.

The fabric uses high stretch fabric and once used will not be loose. It will stick to the skin, though

without hindering activities. The finger part is cut off, for there is no use for this product, as it focuses on

    the support of the wrist.

  • 8/10/2019 Ipdd Report

    33/42

    Emotional Appeal

Depending on which type of the product is, the appearance may vary. Though for the therapeutic type,

theresgenerally the color black, as the features and uses to help sufferers of CST are prioritized. But for

casual wearers, there is a variety of colors and style. So to fit a customer is to simply vary the colors in

    eye-catching, unique colors.

Glomove may be a product that was made to be affordable for the customers, but that does not mean

the quality does not say superiority. The design is slick and trendy to express quality. The product is both

useful and is appealing in comparison to some of our competitors. And by varying the colors and style,

customers can choose a Glomove that fits them, inspiring their pride of ownership.

Ability to Maintain and Repair the Product

Glomove is made out of fabric, to maintain it is not such a difficult task. Maintaining the glomove only

need to clean it. Use soft wet cotton and rub them over the spot with a stain. Glomove is also a product

that should last for a while, and should not break easily, so reparation does not occur so often.

    Appropriate Use of Resources

Because Glomove is a product that focuses on customer needs, satisfying customer requirements is

vital, especially the product being that has medical properties (to help assist sufferers of CST). Resources

are used to make sure the product is manufactured properly with little defect and maximum effectivity.

The materials used to make Glomove is sufficient for its use, for instance the use of Jersey for flexibility

in fabric, and also the softness when touched or rubbed, making it comfortable. The materials used are

also fairly affordable in price, so the price of distribution could be affordable for customers.

Because we strived for simplicity but useful in our product, Glomove has sufficient usage for its intended

use, certain possible features were not added, which was why we went with the fingerless, wore-on

type, compared to the strap-on like splinter. Though perhaps lacking in strength, but it is sufficient for its

use, and simple enough not to hinder, and even enhance, daily activities.

    Product Differentiation

Firstly, our product has a unique name/brand, and that alone has made a catchy strike for customers, a

name that is easy to remember. When advertised, the one to grab attention would not only be the

product itself and its uses, the styles, colors and name brand would help in recognition.

Glomove is also an easy to identify item, being a stylish fingerless glove with a support pad. In the

streets it would also be easy to identify, especially since in Indonesia, little use fingerless gloves, and so

that in its own is very eye-catching, and with our specific colors, identification is likely.

Glomove is also a medical-based product, which fits the corporate identity of EIS MedCorp. Because EIS

is a company that works on medical products, though not strictly, and the types of Glomoves proves

    that fact in the variety.

    Costs of Process Reduction

The cost in the process of making the product is calculated by amount of labors, wages, cost per hour,

rounding up into the total costs per hour.

The activities counted are based on the processes used to make the product, totaling up the cost the

result is shown at table 2.7.1 with the total cost of Rp 363,886 per hour. The processes Cutting Sponge

Hati (2.5mm) and Sewing Sub assembly are bolded in red and the reason is because after analyzing and

reviewing through the processes, two of the 10 processes arent necessary for the creation of the

    product.

The product Glomovehas a rest-pad as one of its core parts, and in order for the pad to support the

weight given by the arm is by the cushion, but also the use of sponge Hati. The company deduced that

5.0mm is the one used because of the sturdiness thats given better than the 2.5mm one. Originally, the

2,5mm is used for variety, but in terms of priority, it is not very high.

Furthermore, All sub-parts are assembled together at the same time in the assembly process, rendering

the sub-assembly process futile, and can be removed for cost reduction.

    PROTOTYPING

    I. Use of prototyping for GlomovesPrototyping have several important usage for many types of products, Learning,

communication, integrating and for milestone, for some, certain aspects is used more or is

of more priority. For Glomoves our use of prototypes were mainly for learning and

integration, though other aspects are also used.

    Learning

As explained above, Glomoves uses an earlier prototype to determine plenty of

elements and how it would work for the entirety of the product. Our earliest

prototype was simply made out of Sponge, foam and elastic bands, roughly put

together to create the base shape of our glove. This prototype helped us learn that

the current shape for the base glove would not be very effective and caused further

changes for the product, ultimately for the better.

    Communication

From the early prototype it is also then possible to communicate to the rest of the

team easier to explain what works and what does not work for the product.

    Integration

Here is where the team decides how and why a certain aspect of the product are

erased or changed, like in the early prototype, prototype beta, several changes were

made, for instance the initial design and the pattern. Which in turn changed the

process to match the new design.

Step 2: Level of Approximation of prototype

The level of approximation for our product is based on

the specifications made previously on the designing of

the product, and the level of effectiveness when worn

    Step 3: Experiment Plans

For the experiment plans, each prototype is planned by
