1. Dementia and Physical Disability – Tuesday 21 June

This course introduces community care workers to the issues associated with working with people who have a physical disability (life long or acquired), who have dementia. The course is designed to challenge participants to identify the personal, social, practical and structural factors that either facilitate or compromise the provision of support to this target group.

2. HACC Orientation Day 1 – Wednesday 22 June

Day 1 provides an overview of the HACC Program and making referrals to services within the HACC Program. Topics include:

• What’s the difference between HACC, CACPs, EACH and other community care programs?

4. The Person - Centred Approach to Managing the Behavioural Symptoms of Dementia – Tuesday 12 July

This session explores the factors that contribute to behaviour change and develops a problem solving approach to build a toolbox of responses. Effective assessment of the behaviour, evaluating response strategies and proactively planning to anticipate triggers are all considered in managing this area of dementia care.

5. Working with HACC Clients from Refugee-like Background – Thursday 14 July

Do you know which of your CALD clients are refugees? Are you aware of their special needs when accessing and using Home and Community Care? This five-hour workshop “Working Effectively with HACC Clients from Refugee-Like Backgrounds” introduces HACC workers to the experiences of refugees, the effects of torture and trauma on the individual, the impacts of ageing and disability on trauma survivors, and working within a recovery framework. We will use case

These workshops are provided by the Services for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Survivors of Torture and Trauma (STARTTS) in collaboration with local HACC networks, and funded by NSW Dept of Human Services, Ageing, Disability and Home Care.

6. Evaluation of the Interagency Protocol for responding to Abuse of Older People – Thursday 23 June

The primary purpose of the protocol (attached) is to provide a whole-of-government perspective and support agencies to work as partners to address an issue that crosses multiple government jurisdictions and funded services providers and ensure a coordinated response to the abuse of older people. It is designed to provide a clear understanding of the various roles that key NSW Government agencies play in the process of responding to abuse of older people in the community. It was developed to provide a practical framework for workers and supervisors or line managers who provide services to older people living in community settings, that is, older people who do not live in residential aged care facilities.

The protocol defines abuse of older people, outlines principles for responding to abuse of older people, addresses key concepts that require understanding and describes the roles of different NSW government agencies in responding to abuse of older people.

In the workshop, the consultants will seek information to help answer the following questions:

• Does the protocol support a whole of government approach to responding to the abuse of older people?

• Is the protocol comprehensive, useful and current?

• What are the desirable and actual levels of interagency cooperation?

• What if any barriers exist to interagency responses?

• How effective has training for staff been and is more required?

• What data exists that could be useful for monitoring rates of abuse?

The aim of the research work is to further quantify and understand exposures by a range of individuals, who may be exposed to methamphetamine (and other chemical hazards) during and following manufacture in the clandestine laboratory.

In 2004, the NSW Government established the Grain Infrastructure Advisory Committee (GIAC) to review the reasons for the low utilisation of these lines and the merits of keeping them open. In response to GIAC’s findings, the Government suspended operations on several lines. However, low utilisation and low cost recovery on the grain lines continued to be a concern.
