What are your plans for the future?

I would love to live in a foreign coun-try and help them develop basic farm-ing practices and I would like to travel around the states doing leaderhisp training of some sort, whether it be with a company or FFA, run a marathon and I would like to have a family.

The next Iowa National Officer?

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!STEVEN BROCKSHUS

Steven BrockshusNational Officer CandidateSteven comes from a small town in Northwest Iowa. He is a dairy farmer by blood and worked on his familys’ farm for his SAE throughout high school.

Why did you decide to run?

I decided to run because I feel I can make a difference. Every single person, no matter what walk of life you are in, is searching for something and I might not be able to show you what you are lacking in life, but within the first initial moments of a conversation I feel I can connect with anyone on a deep level and help them find what they are searching for.

What is your very first memory you ever have of FFA?

I remember going into school with my dad when he taught Ag Ed and playing Oregon Trail on a Mac Computer in his classroom when I was about five years

How has FFA prepared you for the future?

Putting me in high pressure situations at times I didn’t think I was ready for which pushed me to adapt to the situa-tion, think on my feet and make the most of the situation.

Who is your biggest influence and why?

My biggest influence would have to be my father, because no matter what the situation or what we are doing, he al-ways moves forward, looks for the silver lining and always makes the most out of every situation.

What do you think the best thing about FFA is?

The people, the values and how you could not know a person at all and walk up to them and have a conversation with them like you have known them for years.

What is one of the best thing that FFA provides?

A sense of belonging, because no matter who you are, where you come from, or what your background is; there is some-thing in FFA that you can succeed in.

What’s big, blue and gold, and hard to pronounce? You guessed it! It’s the Iowa FFA Degree Ceremony. On April 23, 2013, the Iowa FFA was proud to recognize 639 FFA members for their outstanding achievement, as they joined the elite group of Iowa FFA Degree recipients. These 639 members from all across the state were required to fulfill some mountainous re-quirements in the areas of SAE, leadership, and personal growth. Each recipient was needed to dedicate at least 300 hours or invest $1,000 in his or her SAE, as well as demonstrate 25 hours of community service, perform ten procedures of parliamentary law, and fulfill other necessities. One member productively capitalized in his SAE and leadership in his FFA Chapter. Dustin Smith of the Decorah FFA Chapter learned at a young age that he wanted to devote his time to showing steers. Smith began his SAE in beef production in 2005 when he purchased a show steer. Pro-gressively he grew his herd, and today he main-tains seven cows and calves in his herd. Smith credits his SAE as one of the best educational programs he has ever encountered. He explained that, “a classroom can teach certain ideas and principles, but not the real world experience I have encountered through my beef production SAE.” Smith is not alone. Every member that received the Iowa FFA Degree showed growth in his or her Supervised Agricultural Experi-ence and continues to add inspiration to the next member filling out the degree application. Maybe next year there will be a bigger challenge to pronounce 640 names of prestigious Iowa FFA members in the Iowa Degree Ceremony.

The Conference Experience

When I walked into Hilton for my first state con-vention, I was surprised to see so many blue jack-ets. I had learned the number of Iowa members in my introductory agriculture class, but did not realize the actual size until I saw them in person. I looked around and saw the amazing chapter ex-hibits that showed projects of all kinds from across the state. After competing in my CDE, I attended the next session and was mesmerized by the loud music, energized members, and state officers who seemed larger than life from where I was sitting in the crowd. This was the 85th State Leadership Conference.

Above is how many young members feel at their first state conference. For many young Iowa FFA members the State Leadership Confer-ence, often referred to as just State Convention, means more than two days away from school or the next competition, it is a means for them to dis-play their talents in front of the state’s members. Whether being on stage to receive an award, play a pre-session game, or perform in FFA Idol, State Convention allows FFA members to become their own superstar. Convention began on Sunday, April 21 and ended on April 23. During that time, many great moments were made.

Possibly the biggest attraction and most com-petitive aspect of State Convention are the many leadership Career Development Events (CDEs) for

members to participate in during the second day of convention. The purpose of these events is to develop the member’s abilities to be efficient lead-ers with an emphasis on communication. All of the contests involve a speaking aspect, but each

is a different scenario. Extemporaneous speaking is a category where the participant collects writ-ten material prior to the event, but receives three speech topics 30 minutes before they compete, of which they must choose one to deliver a speech on. Experience the Action is a leadership CDE that

allows members to get creative and show their chapter’s activities as a recruitment method. Most chapters do, in fact, use their material to promote their chapter back home after contests. Many hours of preparation and practice lead up to these events as the members must qualify for state by placing first or second at sub-districts and/or dis-tricts. Members are very passionate about their involvement and all their work goes towards re-ceiving a gold rating and a spot on stage. At the 83rd State Leadership Conference, I placed first in the public speaking category. That experience was truly amazing and one I will not soon forget.

Receiving an award on stage at one of the four sessions is a dream shared by many members. Brandy Wright, a member of the East Sac FFA chapter, received second place in the Program of Activities leadership CDE at state. Brandy loved competing and when asked about the outcome she stated, “It was an amazing feeling to stand up on that stage and be able to represent not only myself, but my FFA chapter as well.”

During the third day of convention, members can participate in a variety of Skills CDEs. Now some of the skills events do involve speaking, very similar to leadership CDEs, but others involve tests or other tasks that challenge a member’s abilities in certain scenarios that pertain to the various ca-

reers in agriculture. Members do not have to qual-ify for these events, but the number of participants are often much larger than those of leadership CDEs. Marketing Plan is a Skills CDE that assess-es the ability of a team to successfully market a T

product or business. The event includes research, a written plan, and one, possibly two, speeches presented by the teams. The top individual and team receive an award and get the opportunity to compete at National Convention in the fall.

Aside from the competitions at state conven-tion, there are many opportunities for members to grow as leaders, young agriculturists, and individ-uals. FFA Idol is a talent show where members ex-press their artistic abilities before their peers. Lexy Kritenbrink, a senior member of the South Central Calhoun FFA chapter, has competed in FFA Idol for several years and stated, “FFA Idol was a fun way to get involved at State Convention, it required a lot of hard work but hearing the loud applause after our performance made it all worth it.” After viewing all of the talent, I can comfortably say that all those who participated in the show did a truly amazing job and were more entertaining to watch than most talent shows on TV today!

Another event at State Convention is the career show that takes place in Scheman. At the show, a multitude of businesses, colleges, and chapters demonstrate and inform the members of how they contribute to society and the industry of agri-culture. There are also several workshops that the members can attend to develop career interests and further their potential. One workshop includ-ed meeting and cooperating with a National FFA Officer, an amazing opportunity that no member would soon forget.

The heart of State Convention is the meeting and learning from those young adults that wear the blue corduroy jackets. Whether member-to-member, adult-to-member, or member-to-busi-ness, working together, meeting new people, and sharing the passion that each and every person at

State Convention has for agriculture; makes the foundation for this influential event. Whether dis-cussing conventional or organic agriculture, de-bating the most nutritional food source, the ex-change of ideas and beliefs, or demonstration of pure passion for the agricultural industry, you can see the members developing as young adults and young leaders before your eyes. The FFA mission statement focuses on premier leadership, per-sonal growth, and career success. State Conven-tion is one event that can develop all three. Even those who have never attended convention can see the passion and excitement the members and the Iowa FFA bring to Ames.

Members who attend State Convention do not regret having to make up the homework when they return to school on Wednesday. Each one will leave with a personal and amazing experi-ence. Whether it is connecting with a district or state officer, winning your respective CDE, finding the college you are destined to attend, or being one of the nine individuals elected to serve the Iowa FFA association for the following year, the convention has a great impact on the members who attend. Marissa Pham, the Northwest District Reporter described her experience as “a great way to show everyone that FFA members, including myself, have various talents and a diversity of in-terests.”

This past year was my sixth State Conven-tion and each one was truly amazing. I have no regrets when it comes to my series of Conven-tions. I met many amazing individuals and grew as leader. Each year there were new surprises and amazing outcomes and this year was no different. Under the leadership of an amazing officer team,

the Iowa FFA had another amazing and success-ful convention, but before you know it, the 86th State Leadership Conference will be knocking on Hilton’s door! ~Brad Pickhinke

Page 12: Iowa FFA Today - Post State Leadership Conference 2013

I saw that it also rang true as I spent 3 days in Iowa for the State Leadership Conference. The value that your state sees in FFA and Agri-cultural Education is incredible - something I cannot wait to be a part of. When you serve as a State FFA Officer, you aren’t able to travel to other states very often, unless it is for train-ing with other state officers or events. So coming to participate in the Iowa State Lead-ership Conference from East Troy Wisconsin, it was a special occasion.

The Sioux Central FFA chapter takes that quote seriously, taking their rural values half way across the world to Haiti. I can’t help but be impressed and excited for your opportu-nity. Serving others in a place that truly needs it- something that is at the core of who I am. Hearing and reading about how your state has helped package meals with Meals from the Heartland that were taken as part of phase 1 last summer and now going back to do phase

“Rural is not where you come from, it’s what you value.”

12 | Iowa FFA Today Post SLC Edition

As I drove through the state of Iowa, I couldn’t help but act like a little kid in a can-dy shop… granted it wasn’t lollipops and ice cream cones, but corn stalks and pig farms. Both equally as great. From a girl that did not grow up directly in production agriculture, I only visited the farm on the weekends, and the most I did was help feed calves. But pro-duction agriculture fascinates me, the hours and hours farmers put in and the fantastic food grown and animals raised never ceases to amaze me. It felt like home- the rural drive and surrounded by farm land. Presenting a workshop on communicating agriculture titled #TellYourStory with EASE, I saw that members, teachers and families care about what they do and how people perceive it. For those that at-tended, I hope that you continue to challenge yourselves to tell the story of agriculture and FFA and why it is incredibly important in their community, state and our country.

As the days went on during convention though- I realized it was more than that. It brought back a quote my dad told me, “Rural is not where you come from, it’s what you val-ue”. Having these rural values instilled in me,

2 where you will be able to truly dig deep into their agriculture and agricultural practices im-proving them and their well being. There is a quote that says, you can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, you can teach him to fish, and feed him for a lifetime. I believe the same goes for farming and agriculture. You can feed a man for a day, but if you help him to develop his practices and better efficiency, he and his family and community will eat for a lifetime. And YOU get to be part of that; what an in-credible opportunity. You are will be part of something bigger than yourself as you make a difference there, and in your own life as you truly live out the last line of the FFA motto, “living to serve”.

When 5,000 members, supporters, spon-sors, family and friends fill a coliseum, you know something great will happen. When 639 FFA members receive their Iowa degree - you know that greatness has been achieved and more is about to unfold. When 1,400 mem-bers from 89 FFA chapters package 261,360 meals for the needy, you know that we have a purpose bigger than ourselves. When you

witness a team of 9 prepare, practice and pres-ent a convention smoothly and efficiently - you know your state is in good hands. When speakers bring us to tears and laughter all in one sitting, it reminds us that we are worth it and can achieve even bigger and bet-ter things. Congratulations on a successful convention! There is only one thing that 358 miles, 3 days, and 5,000 members advisors and

guests amount to one purpose - growing our industry, our membership, our potential and

ourselves to be the future leaders and agricul-turalist our world needs. As I drove that 358 miles home, I was comforted knowing that in FFA, rural isn’t always where you come from, but what you value. That drive is something I look forward to along with being involved in your FFA programs as I take my Wiscon-sin roots to Iowa to attend school and take advantage of the “Fields of Opportunities” in the great state of Iowa. Thank you Iowa FFA - keep “living to serve”.

Laser shows, workshops, CDE’s, hairnets, performances from the band and choir... this is just a glimpse of the 85th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference that took place in Ames on April 21-23, 2013. 5,000 blue jackets, flooded the campus of Iowa State University to accomplish this year’s theme: GROW. Walking the halls of of Hilton Coliseum, I was amazed by the excitement, creativity and drive of every person in the blue jacket. I even had to turn my phone off because of all the #iaffa13 updates it was receiving from Facebook and Twitter posts!

GROWTH was evident as members: packaged 261,360 meals with Meals from the Heartland for those less fortunate, competed in Career Development Events and voted in new leadership from the speeches given by 17 state officer candi-dates. This year with 639 recipients, we had a record-breaking number of members receive the highest degree the state can bestow upon a member, the Iowa Degree.

The GROWTH of FFA is simply a reflection of the great in-dustry it represents. From field to city, videos of ‘Farmer Style’ to the ‘So God Made a Farmer’ commercial - the buzz of ag-riculture is incredible. This is even evident by the representa-tion of agribusinesses at this year’s career show, making it the largest one in the country.

What thousands of teenage students are accomplishing on a daily basis is simply inspiring. The future of agriculture has never looked so bright! The flood of the 85th Iowa FFA Lead-ership Conference has come to an end, but the GROWTH should continue in our everyday lives. Remember, we GROW because we can, we GROW because we must!

PASSING

GAVELOfThe

~Josh Earll

What an outstanding 85th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference! It seems like every year members keep growing in so many different ways, and I am so en-thused to see this. There are over 5,000 individuals in one building, all for the same thing: FFA!

My favorite part of convention was the energy. You could just feel the energy in the air. So much passion in one place! Every time I stepped in to Hilton, I felt overwhelmed with passion and energy. As outsiders walk in to Hilton, they look at the sea of blue jackets, and they are amazed. Iowa State students realize the importance of FFA when they see all of these amazing members taking over the city. It is truly an amazing site for all eyes to see.

Any time that I accomplish something, my father tells me one thing, “Focus on what you have in front of you, and you will be successful. Focus too much on the future, and you will not be able to complete the task at hand.” This quote has meant so much to me over the years. It has taught me that if you don’t give it your all at what you are doing, you will never see success. Mo-tivate yourself to become successful in the now, because you cannot control the future if you cannot control the present. Shape your life to what you want it to be.

I challenge you this next year to make your jour-ney in the FFA the best experience possible. Motivate yourself to reach new heights. If you focus on building yourself now, your future will be bright!

CONTINUOUS LEADERSHIP

A sapling that becomes a mas-sive shade tree, a chick that becomes a nurturing mother hen, a seed that becomes a majestic stalk of corn… a better way to solve a problem, working with someone you’ve never worked with before, considering an issue from a broader perspective… all of these are examples of growth. When the word “growth” comes to mind, most people associate the word with the first three descriptions—something that is physical and can be measured by size, shape or appearance. What many do not realize, however, is that growth is so much more than that, especially in FFA. Like a horticulture class car-ing for their spring annuals, the 2012-

young leaders ready to excite and en-gage a growing population of leaders in agriculture. To Josh, Abrah, Brad, Lauren, Trey, James, Dylan, Tony, and Logan the endless opportunities of the upcoming year await—good luck and congratulations on your achievement. FFA members, as many of you have discovered, there is no growth in a comfort zone and no comfort in a growth zone. Get excited about what the future holds for you in FFA and get engaged in opportunities that will expand your horizons! “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” –Unknown.

2013 Iowa FFA Officers fostered a year of historic growth for the Iowa FFA Association. The fun-loving and pas-sionate individuals that came together to make this charismatic team, poured their heart and soul into an organiza-tion that helped them grow in ways too numerous to count. As a result of their unrelenting desire to serve, the Iowa FFA Association has grown—not just in size or appearance—but in pas-sion, perspective, and partnerships. To the team whose commitment to growth in FFA never waivered—Ste-ven, Matt, Cassie, Marshall, Heidi, Theresa, Michael, Josh, and Nolan—thank you. Moving forward, we welcome a talented and enthusiastic group of

Dylan: WOW! I was beyond excited!

Lauren: The first thing that went through my head was that I was so grateful and happy to be given this opportunity.

Abrah: I can’t even explain my first thoughts! I thought it was so surreal to be chosen as one of the 9 people to serve the 13,000 members across Iowa!

Trey: Although I didn’t have an opponent, I was so excited to finally have the dream of becoming a state officer come true.

Brad: I first thought back to my first convention and how badly I wanted to be like the state officers and when my name was called I thought of how I needed to exceed those who came before me instead of imitate them.

If you could tell a freshman member one thing what would it be?

Tony: Take advantage of all the opportunities FFA has to offer.

Brad: FFA is an amazing organization, but every good thing comes to an end, so use the short and precious four years you have to get involved and make a differ-ence.

Lauren: Get involved and give it your best.

Trey: I would tell a freshman to make the most of any opportunity you’ve got. FFA is unique because you can choose how much to put into it and regardless, can still get a lot out of it.

Logan: Do well in school! It is so important! Abrah: Seize every opportunity and every person you come in contact with. You never know what doors they might open.
