“What I did on my summer vacation”….Or better yet, “What I learned on my annual trip to Oktoberfest”. Because this is supposed to be a technical column we will get that out of the way first, what is new for the hobby technically? Well, I learned that most all of the tire companies in attendance have new things in store for the street and the track. For street tires most com-panies are going away from the ultimate grip maximum performance tires and into a softer, gentler all around touring / high performance tire. Those of you that have already found the old Yokohama AVSdb know of what I speak. Is there really a reason to endure the short wearing, hard riding, noise making of the current ultimate performance tires when what we really need is a very high performance tire that gives us 80% of the grip with so much more ride quality and tread life. Both Yokohama and Continental have re-cently introduced new tires and if you are in the market for such I can highly recommend the change. On the track side of tires, they are going completely in the other direction. The players in this arena are Yokohama, Michelin, Kuhmo, Pirelli, Hoosier and Toyo. They can offer you everything from near racing slicks in the (Hoosier) to tires that will put up with extended track abuse (Yokohama) and still get you home safely. Take your choice and pay your money, how fast do you want to go? I am continually amazed at the progress performance tires have made in the last few years. Now, if we can raise the minimum standards for OEM passenger car and truck tires in general, things will be good for everyone. I also visited with TC Kline and his gang at length about his latest BMW suspension prod-ucts. This guy, in my opinion, is the suspension guru for modern day BMW’s. If you find that you have exceeded the factory limitations of the wonderful BMW suspension (most of us never will) he will walk you right through his catalog from simple sway bars to a com-plete coil-over adjustable suspension system for any modern Bimmer. I had the pleasure of road testing the complete package on a 2000 BMW 323 coupe. To say it was a big im-provement is a huge understatement. Man, I would love to drive his system on the new M3. I was also pleasantly surprised at how well this car rode and yet it was lowered con-siderably ( like 2+ inches) and had the grip of a near race car. Great work TC. So what else did I learn at this years Oktoberfest? I learned that the Iowans come to play and come to play hard. As I was intending on relaxing a bit for the week I found that the rest of the considerable group of our chapter had big plans for the week. From Driving schools to TSD rallies from Concours car shows to safety schools it seemed like everyone from Iowa either was competing in something, learning something, or volunteering for some Oktoberfest activity. What a group! When do I get to relax? Okay, when I get home will work I suppose. And what were the results? Not that I was surprised all that much, as if anyone knows, I do, that the Iowa Chapter is always one to be reckoned with, On Friday at the awards banquet nearly everyone in the group won something or was honored in some way for there participation. Like a proud Father I watched as our 3 year old chapter made a considerable impression on not only the awards but as volunteers for the week or the past year. When Fred Bell and myself walked away from the stage after the drawing for the very popular 02 n 02 raffle car I looked at my co-founder Dave Brennan and real-ized what a great idea the Iowa Chapter of the BMW CCA had been, I haven’t asked him yet but he sure looked like he was thinking the exact same thing. So, what did you miss? A GREAT time was had by all and I even know of an Iowa couple who found time to enjoy themselves away from all the activity. As of this printing it looks like Oktoberfest 2003 will be in Austin Texas October of 2003. I might have to miss that one due to the time of year but I hope all of you will consider attending yourselves as we certainly seem to have fun at these things. To be honest, I think I might enjoy a year off, I need a break from all the fun. :-)

Did My First Driving School - How About You?

By: Mike Williams, Iowa Chapter Member, additional comments by your editor

I've always enjoyed driving around corners briskly. It's a bit of a thrill, and I don't usually get tickets for doing it. I bought my first BMW just a few years ago in part because of its reputation for handling and also it's speed, style, smoothness and technology. I was not disappointed. You probably had that long-lasting grin when you got yours too! One of the things that you read about in "Roundel" and certainly hear about at Iowa Chapter club events is the fun that you can have at Driving Schools. (If you haven't attended any chapter events, you are missing the opportunity to meet some of the nicest, helpful, enthusiastic and giving people around.) BMW's are very capable vehicles, they will tell you, and it is a lot of fun to explore these capabilities. I had never raced a vehicle, not even attended races, but the idea of learning about my car from an instructor in a controlled environment sounded interesting. I decided to take the plunge and sign up. As the fateful weekend drew near, I read what I could about driving, cleaned out unnecessary items from the car, and started packing. Friday night I arrived at the headquarters hotel in Council Bluffs and was greeted by many grinning faces. Here's what happened: Up early Saturday morning and drive to the track. Check in and have a drivers' meeting. Next a classroom session for group 1 and group 2 novices - that's me. Instructor is knowledgeable, interesting and remembers what his first school was like. He explains how to work the car. He tells us what the air pressure should be in our tires - first shock of the morning. There will be others. Didn't know you could do that to tires! This is getting serious! Time to take out the tools I brought, clean the windshield, torque the wheel bolts, tape the lights, and check the fluids. The time comes for our run group to go to the grid and get our final inspection; I start to get pumped. Meet my instructor at the grid, give him the keys to my pride and joy, and jump in. The signals start to be given to group 1. He pulls out onto the track and floors it. OK—must be some kind of accelerator check. We hit 100 M.P.H. which is OK. I notice, however, there is no more road ahead! Next, the hardest braking I've ever experienced, a hard right turn, and more tire squealing than I've ever heard in my life. I've just met this guy! Why does he want to kill me? With my own car! Turns 2 and 3 come up immediately. I find out it gets worse! Turn 4 isn't quite as tight, but that just means that the crazy guy (who shall presently remain nameless) just mashes the pedal to the floor again as we rocket from one edge of the track to the other. Turns 5 and 6. What's going on? Is the grim reaper following us and trying to catch us? Turns 7 and 8. Apparently not dead yet. Turns 9 and 10. Well, he is driving. Nothing I can do about that. I can, however, customize my side of the interior. Attempt to put a new convex curve in the footwell. Attempt to rip out the passenger side armrest. Turn 11 - no thoughts, no blood in brain, most of it in my jaw, which is out of my helmet and in my lap. Turns 12 and 13—did not know a car could do that (without rolling about 7 times). Turns 14 and 15 - did not know you could drive a car on a path like that and be under control. Back to the straightaway and lap number two. Here we go again! I decide that I am supposed to be learning something. This time I will open both eyes. After the second lap we pull into the pit. Come to the realization that I know NOTHING about this type of driving, and I've been a driver's education teacher!

What Mr. Williams has just experienced is the standard procedure for driving schools. His instructor has taken the first few laps driving his car to show him or her what it feels like at speed as well as to verify that the car is safe mechanically. Al-

though it feels like it is being driven to the limit, actually the instructor has left much room for error or mechanical problems.

My Turn - even though my eyelids are stretched from my nostrils to my receding hairline. He is coming with me - so at least nothing will happen to me alone. Now that I think about it, nothing bad had happened. Maybe it wasn't so much scary as

it was amazing and unbelievable. Do about four laps. It's kind of fun. Road is smooth and wide, has no traffic coming at me, and has no trees or poles to run into. Even though I don't do much correctly, it is a blast! Another round of class

and car checking follows, then lunch. Driving, Round Two, comes up. My steering is relatively smooth, but the pedals are not. Lots of brake and gas adjustments be-

fore, during, and after curves. Occasionally I hit one right, but basi-cally I'm just looking from cone to cone. Don't know which turn on

the track I'm on! Driving, Round Three for the day isn't much better. Go a little faster, which means everything else has to be adjusted. Just don't have a feel for it yet. Hit some turns well, but then am so pleased that I think about them instead of lining up the next ones -

and they come up fast! The entrance to turns 5 and 6 look like 7 and 8, but the line is different. Where am I? Seeing someone in the mir-ror who needs the signal to pass, or passing myself, totally breaks my concentration. This is more fun than I have ever had driving on the street, but the lack of progress is frustrating. Time to pick up for the day and go back to the hotel. Better slow down—this isn't the racetrack! Take it easy on the ramps! Back in my room I drive the

track in my mind. To my surprise, I can visualize every turn -in order. I use the diagram in the packet to sketch the proper line.

UH HUH, Although Mr. Williams is frustrated he is indeed getting it, as this is exactly where we all were at one time. Everything a blur,

too much going on at one time. But as he calms down in the evening he finds he can visualize the track and each corner, he is making

progress rather quickly.

Sunday Morning - back to the track. Schedule and procedures are all now routine. Ask my instructor to drive my car again. The shock value is gone (I think). Want to appreciate what he does and also want to watch him with my better-developed perspective. He has

decades of racing experience, but it is still amazing to me. My turn again. Hey! I know these curves. Hey! I know what to do. Hey!

Sometimes I'm able to do it. Progress! We are both happy. Round Two - more of the same. Less coaching from him, more consistency

from me. Will this grin fit into my helmet? Round Three - the last one already? My instructor is not as late to the grid as usual. This

time he was not fixing someone else's car or lending out tools from his huge trailer - a shop on wheels. Yes, my instructor was the very generous Jim Simpson of Simpson Motorsports, Iowa City, a very

patient and pleasant man. The session is over much too quickly. No wonder people get addicted and find as many ways as they can to get on a track. Time to pick up, let the air out of the tires, say good

byes, and drive home. Well, everybody was right; it was great!

I tried it. How about you?

We very much appreciate Mike’s article and hope you all take his advice and give us all a chance to show you just how much fun this high performance driving sport can be. It takes no natural talent to get started as even the best drivers in the world had to learn there craft, yes even Michael. Actually, that is the very best part of this

activity, you can always learn. As an example, I picture myself a bet-ter than average driver having been around this sort of thing for

many years. I have ridden with some of the best in the world at one time or another as well as some of the best in the BMW CCA. Re-

cently I had a chance to be humbled when at this years Oktoberfest there was a chance to take laps with Bill Auberlin for a charity dona-tion. Now we all know Bill is a great driver but I assumed I would be ready for anything he could throw at me. Bill’s skill and car control

reflexes were amazing. Upon exiting the car all I could think to say is “Man, do we have a lot to learn”.

I think I will take my own advice and do this driving school thing as much as possible, how about you?
