Our Parent Teacher Conferences were successful, with many parents coming to meet with teachers. We had hard copies of our parent surveys to be filled out by parents as opposed to the computer. Your opinion is important to us. The annual Purple games played by all of our fall sports teams were a big success once again. All of the activities culminated in the Friday football game where the Bulldogs defeated the Gladiators of Fowlerville!! “Hats Off” to Mrs. Grummett and her committee who spent countless hours getting the activities and City of Ionia prepared and decorated for the Purple Games and the fight against cancer. Ionia Public Schools is always honored to be a big part of Purple Week in Ionia. Homecoming Spirit Week, October12th-16 th , was successful and much fun for all students! Each day had a different theme from Monster Day to Halloween Costume Day. Wednesday, October 14 th was the Powder Puff game. This year the Juniors pulled out the victory!! Following the Powder Puff game was the Homecoming Bonfire. This was organized by the Blue Crew under the direction of Mrs. Lindemer and Mrs. Green. As always, the City of Ionia Fire Department was on hand to put out the fire at the close of the activities. This year, we had cheerleaders on hand to lead our students through the fight song. The Spirit Week concluded on Friday with a Pep Assembly in the gym. The members of the Marching Band led our students through the halls and into the gym. As always, the Pep Assembly was filled with performances by the cheerleaders, lip sync battles between students and lots of excitement !! This year we have a new college ambassador. His name is Aaron Bagwell and he is a graduate of Michigan State University. Aaron is off to a great start and has many activities planned for College Application Week October 26 th -30 th . A Message from Mr. Manciu

Dear Parents,

The end of the first quarter is arriving on November 6th. Our Parent Teacher Conferences were successful, with many parents coming to meet with teachers. We had hard copies of our parent surveys to be filled out by parents as opposed to the computer. If you were unable to fill one out at conferences, you can still give us your input. Please visit

Ionia Public Schools is always honored to be a big part of Purple Week

in Ionia.

Homecoming Spirit Week, October12th-16th, was successful and much fun for all students! Each day had a different theme from Monster Day to Halloween Costume Day. Wednesday, October 14th was the Powder Puff game. This year the Juniors pulled out the victory!! Following the Powder Puff game was the Homecoming Bonfire. This year, we had cheerleaders on hand to lead our students through the fight song. The Spirit Week concluded on Friday with a Pep Assembly in the gym. The members of the Marching Band led our students through the halls and into the gym. As always, the Pep Assembly was filled with

performances by the cheerleaders, lip sync battles between students and lots of excitement !!

This year we have a new college ambassador. His name is Aaron Bagwell and he is a graduate of Michigan State University. Editors from GVSU's Lanthorn Visit IHS Journalism Classes

On Wednesday, October 7, the editors from Grand Valley State University's

Lanthorn student newspaper met with Ms. Ward's two journalism

classes. Editor in chief, Audra Gamble spoke with students not only about

how to conduct great interviews, but also shared strategies for building a

readership for an online student newspaper like our own Bulldog Beat. In

addition to sharing writing tips, Ms. Gamble met with a small group of

students to talk about the role social media plays in drawing in

readers. Sports editor Adam Knorr worked with groups of students

nterested in writing sport features and game recaps. Student Life editor

Maddie Forshee tackled the tough issues, meeting with students to talk

about how to write about controversial topics that affect students' daily

lives. News editors Stephanie Brzezinski and Hannah Lentz shared with a

small group of Bulldog Beat writers strategies for organizing a news article.

Senior I.H.S student Elijah Sinkler-Gray said of the opportunity, “It was great

getting to hear from people who are doing the same thing we are but at

the college level. They shared lots of great tips.”

A Big Brothers/Big Sister Program is being initiated between Ionia High School (sophomores & juniors) and Rather Elementary students. This pilot program will involve five pairs of “Bigs” and “Littles”, with the objective of mentoring and helping with assignments. The interview process for selecting the Big Brother/Big Sister is just beginning, so it is not too late to sign up! If you are a sophomore or junior; stop by Mrs. Shattuck’s room (211) for information and/or an application

before November 1st.

On October 8th, the Vocal Music Dept sponsored a trip to the Globe Theatre in Stratford, Ontario to view “Taming of the Shrew”. There were 50 participants who effectively learned more about our Shakespeare’s influences, inferences, costuming of the 1600’s, and dialogue, besides respectfully observing our US Border Patrol. A special thanks to Mrs. Scheller for arranging this

trip. It was a great fall day!
