4 IONA PREP NEWS

Summer 2008

Dear Friends,

Another year is over! This news magazine brings much good news about Iona, so I know you will enjoy reading it. I cannot leave this position without saying thank you to all of you who so generously support the mission of Iona Prep. We should all be very proud to be associated with such a great institution. I have worked with and met so many people who care very deeply about our school and its traditions, its teachers, and most importantly its students. Our world is one which does not always support our values. It is incumbent upon us to make sure that our students understand that they are the next genera-tion to make a difference in the Catholic church. Your support of that and of the other work we do is very much appreciated. The work of Blessed Edmund Rice will be continued by not only the Christian Brothers, but also by the lay faculty, our students, and our alums.

You have supported that work with your prayers and your gifts. We have sur-passed our goal of $300,000 in our annual fund and we hope to do even bet-ter next year. A new strategic plan is being developed so that our centennial in 2016 will be a wonderful celebration of our history and tradition. We look forward to you being a part of that. God bless you for all you do for Iona Prep.

Sincerely,

Maureen B. Kiers President

welcome...

from the president

The Trustees and Board of Directors of Iona Preparatory School are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. James Irzyk as President of Iona Prep as of July 1, 2008.

Mr. Irzyk is an educator with twenty-five years of experience in independent schools as an administrator, teacher, coach, and adviser. Jim began his career at Cushing Academy and then taught at the International School of Brussels. For twenty years, Jim has held various positions at Choate Rosemary Hall School, most notably the dean of summer programs for the past fif-teen years. In this position, Jim was responsible for all aspects of operating a day and boarding school for over 500 students from around the world who desire to advance and enrich their academic background in the summer. In 1995, his strategic plan led to the formation of eight new academic programs and a day sports camp which has resulted in the most robust enroll-ment in the school’s summer program history.

At Choate Rosemary Hall, Jim was the head varsity football coach for fourteen seasons. He captured the New England Class A Championship in 1990 (undefeated) repeating his success several more seasons. He has also been the head varsity softball coach for sixteen years winning the Western New England Class A Championship a number of times. He coached the junior varsity boys’ basketball team for five years.

Jim was selected as a NAIS/EE Ford Fellow for Aspiring School Heads. Through intensive programming, mentoring, and specialized projects, NAIS/EE Ford Fellows develop their leadership capacities and learn about major issues facing independent schools today.

His community involvement includes serving on the board of directors for the Wallingford YMCA, coaching for community baseball, basketball and soccer teams. Jim is a class agent for the Holy Cross alumni office/annual fund.

In addition to a breadth of successful leadership experience, Jim’s academic qualifications are strong. He is a graduate of College of the Holy Cross where he received a B.A. in economics (minor in sociology) and earned his M.A. in business administration at American International College. He recently completed coursework for a sixth-year certificate in educational leadership at Southern Connecticut State University.

Jim’s wife, Jody Abzug, is a graduate of Williams College and the University of Delaware. Jody is a certified fundraising executive. Jody has worked in various fundraising consultant positions. Her most recent position was as director of the annual fund at Cho-ate Rosemary Hall. The Irzyks have twins, Jordana and Jeremy, who will be entering the fourth grade.

The Trustees, Board of Directors, and the entire Iona Prep community look forward to working with Jim in continuing the mis-sion and vision of the Prep in the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice.io

SPRING/SUMMER 2008 5

Summer 2008

Dear Friends of Iona Prep,

Many introductions were made this past school year. We introduced Edline to help parents and students better monitor grades and academic progress. We introduced MealPay Plus to help us upgrade our level of cafeteria service. We introduced two new science labs to ensure that our students will learn and work in state-of-the-art classrooms. We introduced new courses, AP World History (for freshmen!) and Meteorology, to help further broaden our already comprehensive academic offerings. We are proud of these new initiatives and pleased with their results but ad-mit openly that they pale in comparison to some other, more significant accomplishments of 2007-08.

This year we introduced 200 young men in the Class of 2011 into the Iona Prep family and into the larger family of Edmund Rice Christian Brother Education worldwide. These friendships and connections will sustain them for life, wherever it leads them in the future. We introduced 203 graduates in the Class of 2008 to some of the finest colleges and universities in our country and those men were awarded more than sixteen million dollars in scholarships and grants. They leave well prepared for higher education and a life of principled, Christian behavior. They are the future of the Church and nation.

Our facilities are outstanding and our programs exciting, but our students are the reason we exist as an institution. Thank you for your continued support of our school, our mission, and our men.

Have a safe and happy summer.

Sincerely,

George F. Teasdale ‘86 PrincipalLive Jesus in our Hearts. Forever.

Eagle ScoutsFour young men from Iona Prep earned their Eagle

Scout badges, the highest rank in boy scouting.

With the help of fellow scouts, family and friends

each scout completed projects that entailed hours

of hard work and dedication. Thomas R. Blandi ’08

member of Boy Scout Troop 15 created an English

garden at the Thomas Paine Cottage Property.

What was once an eyesore and a troubled water

flood area is now a flourishing garden, a histori-

cal heritage as it once was. Benjamin D. Brink ’08

member of Boy Scout Troop 15

repaired a trail in Nature Study

Woods in New Rochelle, part of

Westchester County’s Parks. A

local business donated wood

chips which completely cov-

ered the trail. This project has

allowed people once again to

walk through the woods to en-

joy nature. Michael R. Cunning-

ham ’08, member of Boy Scout

Troop 14 of Carmel converted

a neglected lot into a leveled, fenced, grassy field

with benches and picnic tables. This benefited

the children from his grammar school, St. James

the Apostle. J. Scott Sommavilla, Jr. ’10 member

of Boy Scout Troop 1 in Hawthorne refurbished

the outside of the American Legion Post No. 112.

When asked why he chose this project Scott said

“I wanted to honor our veterans to say ‘thank you’

to the men who have not only served our country

but were also members of the Hawthorne Chapter

Troop 1 since 1935.”

Italy TripDuring Holy Week, thirty-two students from Iona Prep engaged in an educational adventure to Italy. The trip was chaperoned by President, Maureen Kiers along with faculty members John Pettinella, Anthony Fava, Rosina Osso, and Kevin Kelton. The students began the trip by staying at the Lido in Venice. After Venice, the group traveled south to Padua then to Florence where they enjoyed the Cradle of the Renaissance for two days. From there the group made a lightening- quick trip to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The spiritual highlight of the trip was visiting the town of Assisi to see the Church of St Francis. They even managed a day trip to Pompeii to see the famous ruins. The beautiful journey ended in the Eternal City to see the Vatican, the center of Baroque art, and the monuments of the Roman Empire. Kevin Kelton, Iona Prep’s group leader, said of the trip “We all sang songs, told stories, and prayed in remembrance of the events of Holy Week. It was a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable educational and cultural experience for all.”

Leadership WeekendOn February 1, 2008, fourteen committee members led forty-nine freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors to a retreat weekend at the Don Bosco Marian Shrine in Haverstraw, New York. Participants chosen for the annual workshop demonstrate leadership qualities in academics, athletics, student government and extra curricular activities. Spiritually focused, the main objective was to create new friends, to recognize their leadership skills while attending workshops that enhance their communication and listening skills. The workshop provides a great opportunity for Iona’s young men to ex-change ideas in the areas of service, community building, prayer and lasting friendships. Iona Prep’s faculty member and leadership workshop modera-tor Maryellen Fealy was the coordinator for the weekend. She was assisted by Iona Prep staff and faculty members.

SPRING/SUMMER 2008 9

Malpighi VisitIona Prep and Liceo Malpighi, a Catholic high school

in Bologna, Italy participated in a student-exchange

program. The exchange program began in 2006

when Elizabeth Barili, English teacher at Liceo Mal-

pighi met with Principal George F. Teasdale ’86 and

Director of Guidance Joseph Klein to initiate the

program. In the fall semester, Iona Prep hosted two

students from Italy, Francesco Babbi and Giuseppe

Grandi. Both played soccer on our varsity team in ad-

dition to maintaining high grades in senior courses.

In January, Alex Valdovinos ’09 began his exchange

studies at Liceo Malpighi. Last spring George and his

family traveled to Italy to visit Alex and to meet the

Babbi and Grandi families. He also met with the ad-

ministrators and teachers. The host school is quite

unlike Iona Prep. Students attend classes from 8 am

until 1 pm, six days a week. Teachers change class-

rooms rather than students, exams are often oral

and grading is on a very strict 10 point scale. Alex’s

intrepid spirit and academic success has made Iona

Prep very proud. George and his family truly en-

joyed their visit he did say “The gracious and gener-

ous hospitality with which my family and I were met

in Bologna was humbling and at the level I earnestly

hope guests of Iona Prep feel when they visit us.” In

September Iona Prep will begin its second year of

the Malpighi-Iona exchange student program. The

Ursuline school has also joined the program and will

be hosting two students in the spring of 2009.

The Prep Rocks On April 28, 2008, the Iona Prep Rock Ensemble performed for the stu-dents and staff at all three lunch periods. That evening they performed for parents and guests in the Heffernan gymnasium. The Rock Ensemble plays a wide range of music from heavy metal, motown to progressive rock. This year’s membership is the largest it’s ever been with twenty per-formers/musicians including faculty members Christopher Menick ’95 on saxophone and Terence Houlihan ’88 on guitar. The rock ensemble gradu-ated its valuable seniors, Matthew LaPerche ’08, Michael Foster ’08, Jordan Cortese’ 08 and Brian Borque ’08. John Raimondo, the group’s moderator had this to say “The seniors will be missed; three of them were the original members. This group is a large part of why I love working at Iona Prep.”

Family PastaOn Friday, February 29, 2008, Iona Prep’s student-directed production of one-act plays, “Make ‘em Laugh, Make ‘em Cry, Make ‘em Scream”, was preceded by a pasta dinner. The delicious cuisine donated by local vendors was prepared by our very own Dean of Academics Susan Natale, Chief Financial Officer Brian Terhune, Principal George Teasdale ’86 and President Maureen Kiers. This special event, sponsored by Iona Prep’s Campus Ministry, was held to help raise awareness of the exceptional work done by Café Reconcile in New Orleans. Three Christian Brothers have joined the efforts to restore, rebuild and provide educational and employment opportunities for this post-Katrina ravaged area.

Ash Wednesday/LentTo start the Lenten season, Br. Robert Harris, CFC ‘62 led the entire Prep community in a spiritual Lenten remembrance of Ash Wednesday in the Tully Gym. During Holy Week the students par-ticipated in the “Living Stations”. Members of the campus ministry team and the prep players acted out the Stations of the Cross for the entire student body. Br. Harris commented “This was a fitting way to observe the end of Lent.”

Blood DriveThe semi-annual blood drive facilitated by the New York Blood Center under the supervision of Helen Fay, our school nurse, took place on April 4, 2008. Students, faculty and staff mem-bers generously gave the gift of life which will be distributed throughout the New York regions. Br. Carmine Pellegrino, CFC was quoted as saying “It didn’t hurt at all, it felt good to be giving to a good cause.”

extra curricularSpanish Club CelebratesMulti-Cultural DayOn Wednesday April 9, 2008, the Spanish Society of Iona Preparatory School performed an array of folkloric Spanish dances along with the Ursuline Spanish Club in celebration of multi-cultural day. After many weeks of practice the students’ per-formance, which included salsa, merengue and bachata, received a standing ovation.

Food FestivalIona Prep’s Spanish Society members hosted two food festivals. Spanish meals and delicacies were prepared by the students’ parents. The proceeds of this fundraiser were to aid a group of Ursuline students who traveled to New Orleans to rebuild the homes of families affected by Hurricane Ka-trina. The students succeeded in bringing hope and comfort to families in considerable need. Ac-cording to Spanish Society moderator Jose L. Ro-driguez “Iona Prep students are truly motivated to give and be active participants in the vision of Blessed Edmund Rice. The experience of having our students involved in such activities creates favorable results outside of the classroom and prepares students for a life of true benevolence.”

Olympic DayOn April 16, 2008, Iona Prep students enjoyed Olympic Day, an event that takes place every other year. Students participated in various activities including paintball, air hockey, foos-ball, tennis, volleyball, basketball, touch football, tug-of-war, golf chipping, weight lifting,

scrabble, monopoly and video games. A member of Student Faculty Council (SFC) kept score by awarding points to the top three positions. The goal of each game was for

students to earn points for their homeroom. The homeroom winners this year were: first place homeroom 301, second place homeroom 200 and third place homeroom

208. Gaetano Vitiello ‘02, director of student activities commented “Olympic day is not just about winning events, it is meant to be

a day of fun and interaction among students and with the faculty. It really can be called a community building day.”

Prep Players Clue The MusicalThe Iona Prep Players brought the classic board game to the stage in a musical. Ten very talented Ursuline students along with the amazing Prep Players presented an adventure of fun, murder and mystery into the spring show. The cast transformed themselves into the characters seen on the Clue playing cards. “Not an easy task at all” explained di-rector Jason Summers ’98. The stage crew worked tirelessly as they re-created six rooms similar to the Clue game board. By setting the stage in the cen-ter of the gymnasium floor, audience participation and a student/teacher orchestra, the mysterious mood and atmosphere was created. Many of the cast members graduated this year which made this performance a very special one. Nicholas Piacente ’08 president of the Prep Players conveyed on his last production “We have been together since freshman year so this was a very emotional show on and off the stage”. The cast and crew extend their gratitude to Jason Summers ’98 and modera-tor Lizabeth Cooke.

Junior TraditionPassing the BatonOn May 2, 2008 the Campus Ministry Team held a “Passing the Baton” ceremony for the juniors and seniors. The timing, just after Ascension Thursday, was perfect. The theme of the presentation was that Christ passed his work of building the King-dom of God to the disciples when he ascended into heaven. This was combined with the idea that the seniors pass the leadership of the school down to the juniors as they graduate. Along with scripture readings and meditation, the ceremony featured both recent and baby pictures of the seniors.

Ring DayOn May 14, 2008 the juniors received their class rings. The prayer service was organized by Br. Rob-ert Harris, CFC ’62 as he welcomed the juniors as the new leaders of the school.
