Welcome from your chairmanIoD Yorkshire (Humber) is delighted to learn that Lord Haskins is to lead the new Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Former chairman of Northern Foods, Lord Haskins was an advisor to the last government a role he now performs with the coalition Government since they came together in June 2010. Lord Haskins was appointed by a selection panel and will now work with that panel to appoint the remainder of the LEP board. This is a very important appointment in driving forward our sub-regional economy and we are pleased that such a significant figure, with a tremendous track record in both the public and private sectors, has been appointed to take things forward. It is almost a year since heavy snow brought our area, along with other parts of the country, to a near standstill. With deadly snowstorms wreaking havoc on the east coast of the US, early signs are that we might be in for a tough time again this year. In view of this, it might just be worth assessing your own workplace and personnel emergency plans to ready yourselves for what may come our way. The cost to the UK and regional economies with transport and building closures was significant last year so it might just be worth you being as prepared as you possibly can. If we can help in advance, do please let me know.

\This edition of IoD Connect is packed with news and events. As ever, we’d love you to be involved and would urge you to advocate the IoD to colleagues, customers and your own value chains. The more people who get involved, the more successful we will become. Thanks to you, as ever, for your support.

There is plenty going on within our branch at the moment so please keep getting involved and let me know if there is anything you would like me to include

Thank you for your continued support. I hope to see you at our next event.

Richard TuplinChairman, IoD East Yorkshire (Humber)

Future Event: An insight into Tax InvestigationsThe IoD have teamed up with Baker Tilly to present a breakfast seminar which will consider HMRC’s “dash for cash” programme of business records checks. Their recent announcement of task forces to tackle tax evasion will undoubtedly lead to more investigation cases as HMRC attempt to bridge the tax gap.

Unfortunately, nobody is safe as HMRC reserve the right to open an enquiry. Enquiries can refer to either an aspect of the business or the business as a whole. They can undoubtedly have a detrimental effect on a business not least involving unbudgeted costs and diverting management time from the core business activity. Enquiries are always time

consuming and frustrating.Areas to be covered during the seminar will include:

• HMRC training, motives and expectations

• HMRC’s various amnesties• HMRC’s current penalty regime

and how to mitigate them • Business record checks

The speaker is highly renowned tax expert Mike Down, who is a Tax Investigations Partner at Baker Tilly. Mike is a Chartered Tax Advisor and is currently Chairman of Baker Tilly’s Tax Risk & Investigations Management (“TRIM”) group. He joined the firm in 1985, having spent 10 years with HMRC, latterly as an Inspector of Taxes with a broad range of technical and

compliance work. At Baker Tilly, Mike has built substantially on tax investigations experience gained in HMRC. His activities include the provision of advice to smaller firms of accountants on their more “difficult” cases, these ranging from local tax enquiries up to complex fraud investigations. Mike is a regular contributor to “Taxation” and has appeared both in the national press and on the BBC Radio 4 “Today” programme. He is an experienced presenter and looks forward to sharing with you his tales and tips from his time both within HMRC and without.

Behind the Scenes of HMS Iron Duke at Hull’s King George Dock

On Monday 7th November there will be a rare opportunity to visit an operational warship in Hull. The Commanding Officer, Nick Cooke-Priest and his officers and crew will give a unique insight into the management and leadership processes that take place onboard one of Her Majesty’s warships; processes that are renowned world-wide and give the Royal Navy its well-earned reputation of a formidable fighting force.

Nick Cooke-Priest Royal Navy in 1990 and since then has specialised as a helicopter observer, seeing service in Bosnia, Montserrat, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, South Atlantic, United States and North Arabian Gulf. His work within Flag Officer Sea Training involved him working with the development, planning and assessment of RN and NATO warships.

This event will not only be an interesting and unusual opportunity to see how a warship works but will also enable members and non-members alike to gain a view point of how the Royal Navy’s leadership and management enable their officers and crew to remain a flexible and dynamic force.

Removing the statutory duty to deliver work related learning at Key Stage 4

Work related learning became a statutory requirement for schools in September 2004. It introduced a framework through which schools could deliver a programme ‘for’ ‘about’ and ‘through’ work.

• Its aim was to help young people gain skills ‘for’ work that would enable them to function more effectively in the workplace

• To gain knowledge ‘about’ the workplace and functions within it

• To have experience of the workplace ‘through’ work experience and visits.

Work related learning brings together the world of education and business and helps young people to better understand the purpose of their learning and make progress into employment. The Humber EBP supports the delivery of work related learning through:

• Work experience for all KS4 young people• Enterprise and work based activities both

happening within the classroom and within the workplace

• The provision of Labour Market Information (LMI) which helps teaching staff and young people better understand the local, regional and national economy, the opportunities this offers and the progression routes to achieve personal success.

• Employer involvement in the curriculum to help bring learning to life and provided a work based context to raise motivation and achievement

• Continuing Professional Development for teaching staff to ensure they are updated on workplace activity.

• Local networking to develop effective strategies for collaboration between education and business.

A report was released in March 2011 known as the ‘Wolf Report’ in which Professor Alison Wolf sought, amongst other measures, to remove the statutory guidance for work related learning and in relation to that, work experience pre 16.

We believe that the statutory requirement should remain, otherwise some schools, due to lack of resources / commitment, may opt not to send KS4 students out into the workplace, and thereby rob them of probably the only opportunity they will have to experience the world of work first hand whilst still in full time education. If the recommendations are supported, the statute will be removed by September 2012. On October 6th a consultation was launched to seek views from the public about the Government’s intention to remove the statutory duty to deliver work related learning at Key Stage 4. The consultation lasts until January 4th 2012. We would therefore urge members to take part in the consultation to support the continuation of the statutory requirement. Consultation responses can be completed online at: www.education.gov.uk/consultations

Big Thinking

Hull University Business School has invited Brendan Dineen, IBM’s Director of Demand Programmes UK and Ireland to deliver a guest lecture on 9 November 2011. During his lecture, Brendan will be speaking about how IBM has transformed its business model, how it is securing return on investment for sales and marketing spend and also touching on how IBM manage their internal communications to ensure everyone is ‘on message’.

The event is free to attend and all are welcome. From the creation of Deep Blue, a machine that defeated the world’s reigning chess champion back in the 90s, IBM has always been known for its thinking skills.

Its move away from the production of computer hardware and software which made its name – International Business Machines, has led to highly-specialised business services and cutting edge thought leadership.

Brendan Dineen, Director of Demand Programmes for UK and Ireland, will provide an insight into IBM’s appetite for organisational change; its success in transforming its business model to include ROI; its approach to remaining true to its strategic vision and measuring its success; and its aim to build a smarter planet.

Brendan is responsible for developing and executing marketing campaigns that will deliver sales pipeline for the IBM Business across all products, services and sectors. He has held a variety of leadership positions in Europe and beyond, including Director of Marketing and Communications for the Chairman of IBM in EMEA, and Director of 2012 Games for Think London - the Foreign Direct Investment Agency for London.

The presentation will be introduced by Dr Jim Grieves, lecturer in organisational analysis, change, learning and behaviour, and will feature a Q&A session.

Kili Trekkers Update

At the end of September, IoD East Yorkshire (Humber) Branch Committee member Andrew Mould of Baker Tilly undertook a sponsored climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the Dove House Hospice Love you 2 Appeal.

Andrew says “We started the climb on the morning of Tuesday 20 Sept and reached the summit at 7.00 am on Sunday 25th Sept. My climb partner was Karen Bright MD of Signature Associates Limited. We are Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Appeal’s Business Committee. We climbed up the Machame route which is about 100kms, takes 6 days and culminates at the Uhuru Peak at a height of 5,895m. And when we got back down we spent three days doing some volunteer work at a local Tanzanian orphanage before flying back to the UK.”

Dove House is the only adult hospice available to offer invaluable end of life services and support to the whole Hull and East Riding area. It cannot cope and is having to turn away individuals and families with real need. It recently launched its Love you 2 Appeal to fund a £2.5M extension and refurbishment of the facility. Further details can be found on its website www.loveyou2appeal.co.uk.

If you are able to help Andrew reach is fundraising target by giving as donation please visit his Virgin Giving website through the following link; http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AndrewMould
