Invitation to Make a Positive ImpactEstablished in 1996, the Prostate Cancer Research Institute was founded to provide current, unbiased information to men who face the intimi-dating prospect of choosing their own treatment.

PCRI believes that patients empowered with understandable education-al and medical information will ultimately benefit with better cure rates and an improved quality of life.

We invite you to participate in this year’s Prostate Cancer Conference in Los Angeles, California on September 7-9, 2012.

This is the thirteenth year PCRI is hosting this prestigious event. An impressive lineup of world-renowned prostate cancer experts will be presenting current information and cutting-edge research related to treatment and lifestyle issues.

This three-day event is expected to attract more than 800 prostate can-cer survivors, physicians, patient advocates, researchers and health-care professionals from around the world. The conference proceedings will be videotaped and distributed glob-ally to approximately 700 support groups, reaching thousands of prostate cancer survivors. The PCRI conference is a unique opportunity to reach a diverse group of stakeholders in the prostate cancer community.

Please review the accompanying Sponsoring & Exhibiting Opportunities and determine your level of invovle-ment and participation. If you need additional information or have any questions, please call 310.743.2116 or e-mail [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you in Los Angeles this September!

About PCRI

MissionThe Prostate Cancer Research Institute is a 501 (c)(3) charitable not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of men’s lives by supporting research and disseminat-ing information that educates and empowers patients, families and the medical community.

PCRI’s main objective is to educate patients, their families and physicians about prostate cancer by providing the most current information on prostate cancer diagnosis, staging, treatments and available resources.

PCRI believes that a patient who understands his disease and treatment options will be em-powered to communicate more effectively with his physician(s), and will obtain a better out-come. PCRI uses all available communication tools and programs, including a helpline, a quarterly and a weekly newsletter, website and professional conferences to accomplish this important educational objective.

BackgroundPCRI was founded in 1996 by Mark C. Scholz, MD and Stephen B. Strum, MD; two interna-tionally recognized medical oncologists specializing in prostate cancer, with support from the Daniel Freeman Hospital Foundation in Southern California.

Dr. Scholz and Dr. Strum’s vision was that an organization providing insightful clinical re-search, in conjunction with educational activities directed at both the patient and physician, would greatly enhance outcomes for prostate cancer patients everywhere.

Working after hours to contribute their professional skills to cutting-edge work on prostate cancer, Scholz and Strum made the results of their own clinical research and the work of other researchers available to patients and physicians. As a result, PCRI has been involved in impor-tant developments in prostate cancer therapy, discoveries that have a direct effect on the quality of life for men with prostate cancer.

PCRI Support LinePrograms

Prostate cancer comes in many forms and complex variations. Newly diagnosed men and their families are al-most always in a state of shock following their diagnosis, which can often impair the ability to think clearly and formulate a course of action.

Our support line staff facilitators receive up to fifty inquiries a day about prostate cancer. Calls and e-mails come in from all over the world, and come from patients, family members, friends, and even physicians. Our knowledgeable staff facilitators, based out of Los Angeles, California and Sanibel, Florida, work to provide cus-tomized medical information relevant to each individual’s needs.

Our goal is to connect the caller with state-of-the-art resources that raise the effectiveness of dialogue between the patient and his physician, while refraining from giving actual medical advice. The valuable service the sup-port line provides is magnified because technology is advancing rapidly, and what constitutes the best treatment is constantly evolving. Only well-trained, fully-involved staff facilitators can stay abreast of all these new devel-opments. The PCRI is happy to provide this service free of charge via both phone and e-mail.

NewslettersPCRI Insights

PCRI publishes a quarterly newsletter called Insights, which has a circulation of over 20,000 all over the world.

Its goal is to educate, inform and empower the prostate cancer community with the latest advances in prostate cancer treatment and prevention. Our target audience covers the wide range of sophisticated patients, research-ers, primary care physicians, urologists, radiation therapists and medical oncologists.

PCRI provides cutting-edge information about the most advanced thinking on prostate cancer management and men’s health. Anyone is welcome to receive a free subscription to Insights via regular mail, e-mail or both; and all back issues are available for download in PDF format on the PCRI website.

In December 2011, PCRI launched a brand-new weekly e-newsletter, PCRI Weekly, to complement the quarterly Insights newsletter and provide our readers with more frequent updates. PCRI Weekly is posted to the PCRI website every Thursday, and contains up-to-date, detailed information about the latest developments in prostate cancer treatment.

Every week, PCRI selects an abstract from an important study relevant to prostate cancer research and sum-marizes the results, with an easy-to-understand “takeaway message” for men with prostate cancer. Although the focus of this newsletter is on medical news, PCRI will publish occasional feature and human interest stories as well. Back issues of PCRI Weekly are available on the PCRI website.

ProgramsAdvocacyWhile advocacy is not PCRI’s primary goal, the organization has attained a respected and credible voice in the medical, political and public arena. PCRI has judiciously come out in support of worthy prostate cancer-related causes to encourage increased research and to expedite FDA approval of new therapies.

In its efforts to speak and advocate on behalf of patients everywhere, PCRI and its staff have been cited in several news stories published by the following media organizations: •ABCWorldNewsTonight •NBC-TV •TheLosAngelesTimes •TheNewYorkTimes •TheWallStreetJournal •TheWashingtonPost •TVNZ:TheNewsofNewZealand

ResearchThe allocation of research dollars is managed by a distinguished board of physicians representing all the major disciplines involved in prostate cancer care. All serve as volunteers without any financial compensation from the PCRI.

In addition to their extensive research experience, all of these doctors participate in the day-to-day care of men with prostate cancer, which provides a practical clinical perspective for evaluating the value of research propos-als.

In 2011, PCRI supported new, potentially breakthrough work at the following institutions: •MayoClinic:Researchintonewmethodstoinduceapatient’simmunesystemtoattackcancer. •UniversityofNijmegen, theNetherlands:ResearchtoimproveMRIimagingtodetectearly cancer spread. •UniversityofToronto:ResearchintoActiveSurveillanceformenwithearlystagedisease. •JohnWayneCancerInstitute:Researchprogramstoidentifyeffective, lessinvasivewaysto screen, diagnose and treat brain tumors, melanoma, and breast cancer. •ProstateCancerFoundation:Researchintobettertreatmentsforprostatecancer.

ProgramsPCRI ConferencesEvery September (prostate cancer awareness month), PCRI conferences bring hundreds of patients, caregivers, physicians and institutional supporters together for a weekend of interactive sessions and lectures. The 2011 PCRI conference drew more than 700 attendees from 41 states and nine countries.

Delivered by leading physicians, academics and scientists, the presentations are recorded on video and distribut-ed to hundreds of support group meetings around the world. Made possible by generous individual and corpo-rate supporters and a legion of dedicated volunteers, this annual conference brings people together who have an interest in topics related to prostate cancer.

In addition to hearing from experts with a wealth of knowledge about prostate cancer, the conference also allows attendees the benefit of connecting with fellow patients and others in the prostate cancer community. Attendees have the opportunity to attend the following sessions throughout the weekend:•Roundtablediscussion:Apanelofconferencefacultydiscusstheirmedicalopinionsonrealclinical cases. •Q&AwiththeSpeakers:Conferenceattendeesmayaskfacultyspecificquestionsinamoreintimate setting. •AsktheExperts:90-minuteinteractivesessionsthatfocusontopicssuchasMedicalOncology,Urol- ogy, Radiation Oncology, Immunotherapy, nutrition and a prostate-friendly lifestyle. •SupportGroups:WiththehelpofPCRI’spartnersandprofessionalfacilitators,supportgroupmeet- ings are offered to patients and their significant others.

2012 CONFERENCE INVITATION - 6Prostate Cancer Research Institute

NEW! PCRI Mentoring Program (coming this spring)In our continued effort to provide men with unbiased, scientifically accurate information about prostate cancer treatment options, PCRI is in the process of creating an educational program - a comprehensive training and mentoring course - to equip support group leaders across the country with the knowledge needed in a variety of topics to be effective and supportive leaders.

The online course will consist of a series of webinars by well-known medical professionals who are highly re-garded in their respective fields of prostate cancer research. The course will cover a wide range of topics, includ-ing (but not limited to) active surveillance, screening and prevention, imaging, and a detailed overview of the five “shades” of prostate cancer. It will be set up in the format of a regular online class, with required reading, lectures, homework and 2-3 exams.

The curriculum for the PCRI mentoring program is currently in the works, and we plan to launch in the spring of 2012.

Page 7: Invitation to Make a Positive Impact

NEW! PCRI Blue CommunityIn September 2011, PCRI launched a new website called the Blue Community, for men with prostate cancer and their families to network and share their experiences with others in their same risk category, or “shade” of blue (the awareness color for prostate cancer).

The PCRI Blue Community introduces the concept of different shades of blue as a way to navigate the various types of prostate cancer, and provides online discussion forums as a way for men to connect with one another. The Blue Community is rapidly growing, with over 400 active users taking advantage of the site.

WebsiteIn 1998, PCRI adopted the internet as an educational tool. Our website, PCRI.org, contains more than 5,000 pages of information, and currently averages more than 75,000 visitors and 900,000 page views per month.

PCRI.org contains a wealth of content, including medical articles by leading prostate cancer specialists, risk evaluation tools, information about clinical trials, support groups, past issues of our newsletters, patient assis-tance programs, videos and more.

The website provides an introduction to assist a newly diagnosed patient in understanding the biology and extent of his prostate cancer. This understanding is the first step to empowerment that leads to determining his choice of if, when and how to treat his disease.

Programs

ManagementPCRI undergoes an annual financial audit, and consistently receives a “Best in America” seal of approval from the Independent Charities of America.

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded after rigorous indepen-dent review. Only charities meeting the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness are eligible. These standards include those required by the U.S. government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, possibly the most exclusive fund drive in the world.

Of the 1 million charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000 – or 5 percent – meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded the Seal.
