Plenary sessions10:30 – 11:30 Shaking up Grammar: A goals and context-based

approach Compare these sentences: ‘If it rains, I’ll stay at home.’ ‘If you like sushi,

you’ll love this restaurant.’ The second is a natural, high frequency use of this structure. It’s truly context-based and meets the CEF goal ‘give recommendations’. The aim of this talk is to give you concrete ideas to use or adapt for your own classrooms. We’ll examine ways to make grammar more natural and meaningful and therefore easier for learners to understand, produce and retain. Drawing on examples from English Unlimited, we’ll look at how to use this motivating approach to help learners communicate and achieve real-life goals.

Speaker: Leslie Anne Hendra, Teacher trainer, Author, Cambridge University Press

11:30 – 12:30 The New Assessment Criteria for Writing (B1 – C2) The aim of the session is to present Cambridge English new assessment

criteria as well as other features of the unified mark scheme in relation to the Writing Paper of the Cambridge English B1 to C2 level examinations. Specific example of how the new Cambridge English: Proficiency examination is marked will be given during the session.

Speaker: Olga Leondaris, Client Relations Officer, Team Leader and Presenter, Cambridge English Language Assessment SEE

12:30 – 13:30 Coffee break

Concurent sessions13:30 – 14:45 Empower your learners with Speaking Strategies! Speaking strategies address the real-life, immediate needs of learners. They

help learners manage cooperative language tasks more effectively and handle unpredictable situations when their linguistic ability is insufficient. Usually neglected in coursebooks, strategies include checking understanding, gaining thinking time, paraphrasing, managing a discussion, etc. This hands-on workshop aims at helping participants create their own speaking strategies lessons (post-secondary/secondary) and looks at selecting useful goals, choosing natural, high-frequency language, and setting that language in realistic contexts.

Speaker: Leslie Anne Hendra, Teacher trainer, Author, Cambridge University Press

13:30 – 14:30 Chunky Pronunciation The session deals with aspects of pronunciation at sentence level, rather

than individual sounds. Aspects of the session include: using coursebook tapescripts to identify stressed and weak syllables at sentence level, ‘chunking’ utterances to enhance comprehensibility, and using punctuation to reflect prosodic features of spoken English in short informal writing tasks.

Speaker: Richard Cherry, Senior Teacher Young Learners, Child Protection Focal Point, Teaching Centre Sofia British Council Bulgaria

14:45 – 15:00 Break

15:00 – 16:00 Writing Workshop on the Cambridge English: First for Schools

A workshop that will show you how B2 scripts are marked and present you with tips that can assist you in the teaching of the FCE for Schools Writing paper.

Speaker: Olga Leondaris, Client Relations Officer, Team Leader and Presenter, Cambridge English Language Assessment SEE

15:00 – 16:00 Engaging Teenagers using everyday tools and technology

Are teenagers now the same as when we were at school? Do they learn in the same way? This seminar aims to show how teenagers view pedagogical methods using ‘modern technology’ and how we can (with the help of Cambridge English materials and Cyber Homework) engage the teenagers in our classes.

Speaker: Simon Hadley, AVO-Bell, Sofia, Academic Coordinator, Cambridge ESOL Oral Examiner
