The more South Africa moves from racial skirmishes to sustained racialstruggle, the more urgent the issue of U.S. commercial involvementbecomes. Supporters of U.S. investment assert that a U.S. corporatepresence can exert a moderating influence on the policies of the whiteminority government in South Africa. Opponents say that it has not infact done so and that the sooner the minority government is cut off fromits external supports, the better the chances that it will come to termswith the black majority, advance the cause of justice and avoid an out­and-out bloodbath.

The following list of U.S. firms with subsidiaries, branches, represent­atives, licensees, and affiliates in the Republic of South Africa isbased on a list compiled by the U.S. Department of Commerce and pub­lished in Resource Development in South Africa and U.S. Policy (U.S.House of Representatives, Committee on International Relations, hearings,1976), augmented by the names (obtained through the Freedom of Informa­tion Act) of a number of firms that listed South African subsidiariesin applying to the U.s. State Department for registration as munitionsmanufacturers and exporters.

The list shows the amazing extent to which American products -- fromOtis elevators and Owens-Corning fiberglass to Pfizer medicines,Champion spark plugs, Squibb toothpaste and Playtex bras -- are a partof everyday South African life.
