17 About GTI and TARGETjobs

Methodology and marketingThe TARGETjobs Employer of choicegraduate survey 2008 consists of 16sector-based Benchmark Reports usingdata gathered through the TARGETjobsNational Graduate Recruitment Awards survey, whichcollected over 33,700 votes − a 16 per cent increase on2007. The survey was hosted on targetjobs.co.uk from earlyDecember 2007 to March 2008 – a critical period forundergraduates thinking about their choice of employer. Inaddition to providing the winners for the TARGETjobs NationalGraduate Recruitment Awards, the survey gathers a largeamount of valuable data on students and recent graduateswho want to work in 16 different industry sectors. This year, there were additional questions relating to their confidence inthe graduate recruitment market and the strength ofemployer brands on campus.

For the purposes of the TARGETjobs National GraduateRecruitment Awards, data from respondents interested inthis sector contributed to the banking and investment award.

The voting campaign was heavily promoted through nearlythree-quarters of a million copies of TARGETjobs titles andTARGETjobs magazine and through our own database of overa quarter of a million registered users of targetjobs.co.uk. Anextensive promotional campaign was carried out on campusby our established contacts in academic departments andcareers services, and by our network of over 100 campusrepresentatives. We would also like to thank professionalbodies who promoted the survey to their student members inspecific sectors. The sample was supplemented with surveyresponses from members of The Student Panel, provided byOpinionpanel Research, the independent market researchcompany that owns and operates The Student Panel and TheGraduate Panel.

The online questionnaire used to gather information for the TARGETjobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards includedquestions asking respondents which organisations they had heard of within certain sectors. Respondents who stated they hadheard of an organisation were then asked to what extent they would like to work for that organisation. They were able to gradetheir responses from ‘It would be one of my first choices’ to ‘I would not consider working for them’. A point scoring system wasthen used in order to rank the organisations – for example 8 points were awarded to an organisation if a respondent stated thatit would be one of their first choices and 2 points were deducted if a respondent stated that they would not consider working forthat organisation. Organisations were then ranked according to the number of points achieved.
