Year 2000 Highlights

American Red Cross Disaster Relief Efforts

Launched in 1999, Morgan Stanley’s four-year, $1 million fundingcommitment provides support for the American Red Cross AnnualDisaster Giving Program. This program ensures the availability ofimmediate resources to allow the Red Cross to mitigate and respondto local, national and international disasters.

In addition to funding, Morgan Stanley ran two Red Crossrecruitment and training sessions in New York in 2000 to prepareemployees to serve as volunteers in the case of a local disaster.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)

In 2000, Discover Financial Services––a Morgan Stanley company––joined forces with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Discover raised over $500,000 as a National Partner of the Walkto Cure Diabetes. Other Morgan Stanley business units joined theeffort, resulting in an additional $180,000 donated to JDRF forits continuing work on diabetes.

Year 2000 Highlights

Discover® Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program

In 2000, over $1 million was awarded in scholarships to 433 students nationwide. This extraordinary program was established by Discover Card in cooperation with the American Associationof School Administrators. It recognizes exemplary accomplish-ments beyond just academics and enables continued post-highschool education for students at both the state and national levels.Since it’s inception in 1991, the Discover Card Tribute AwardProgram has awarded more than $8.6 million in scholarships toover 4,000 students nationwide.

Morgan Stanley IT Learning Center for Children in Hong Kong

In 2000, Morgan Stanley began funding the IT Learning Centerfor Children at the Hong Kong Society for Protection of Children’sPortland Street headquarters. At a cost of HKD $1 million, thisnew facility will be the most comprehensive of its kind in HongKong. The center, which opened in May of 2001, uses technologyto spark the learning of languages, arts and sciences for underprivi-leged children aged 5 to 12. In addition to our monetary contribu-tion, Morgan Stanley donated furniture and equipment for thecenter.

Les Arts Florissants in Europe

Through Morgan Stanley’s sponsorship of “Les Arts Florissants,”fans of baroque music enjoyed a series of concerts in London,Paris, Frankfurt, Rome and Madrid. Launched in 2000, the three-year, £330,000 sponsorship runs through 2002. Plans thisyear include concerts in Bruxelles and Paris and at the Proms atRoyal Albert Hall, Frankfurt Alte Oper and the Zurich, Lucerne and Edinburgh festivals.

A Close Look at China

In 2000, Morgan Stanley gifted $175,000 to the Asia Society,helping to create the Chinese cultural multimedia festival,

“A Close Look at China.” This historic festival organized by the Chinese Cultural Agency, took place in the United States and included photography and craft exhibits; music and dance performance tours; and a lecture series on arts, culture andtourism. Morgan Stanley also supported the New York performance of traditional Chinese music held at the LincolnCenter that was attended by Jiang Zemin, the president of China, and Vice Premiers Qian Qichen and Li Lanqing.

Year 2000 Highlights

Community Development in Delaware

Discover Bank and the Bank of New Castle––both MorganStanley companies––contributed over $1 million to communitiesin Delaware in 2000. The banks funded low- and moderate-incomehousing, supported educational programs for children, and promot-ed infrastructure improvements, projects for senior citizens andother initiatives to strengthen the community.

Tower Hamlets 2000

In London, Morgan Stanley celebrated the heritage of TowerHamlets as the principal sponsor of the Millennium Year of “Stitchesin Time––A Tapestry for the Millennium,” a signature project ofTower Hamlets 2000.

Exhibited around London as a series of different panels, the tapestrydepicts life in the East End of London from Roman times to thepresent, celebrating the rich mix of cultures and people that haveinfluenced and enhanced life in Tower Hamlets.

Morgan Stanley Has Educated and Trained

More Than 150 Minority StudentsThe Richard B. Fisher Scholars Program is a scholarship andinternship initiative designed to prepare minority undergraduatesfor careers in financial services. Since the inception of the program in 1993, we have awarded almost $1.4 million in scholarships, supporting the efforts of 125 students. Our focus is on minority students with drive, initiative and demonstratedacademic excellence.

In 1999, we initiated the Morgan Stanley Fellowship Program,adding new scholarship opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate minority students across the country. The programprovided scholarships to 28 students this year, 5 at the graduatelevel and 23 at the undergraduate level.

All totaled, Morgan Stanley provided approximately $500,000for 84 minority scholars in 2000.

In the U.K., Morgan Stanley conducts its strategic philanthropicefforts through an International Foundation, overseen by Trusteesand administered by the Community Matters department.

Morgan Stanley’s European headquarters are located at Canary Wharf in London’s East End. The Foundation provides financialsupport to organizations that work to provide sustainable regeneration in all areas of the lives of those in Tower Hamlets and Newham, two of the neediest local communities. In 2000, the Foundation provided over £715,000 in grants to educational,health care and social welfare organizations, with the majority(74%) contributed to education and training projects.

In addition, as part of the Firm’s sponsorship of the summer 2000 exhibition “Encounters: New Art from Old” at the National Gallery in London, 360 young people participated in an educational project called “Wild at Art.” The exhibitionincluded week-long workshops that were based in two schools in Tower Hamlets and Newham, and a visit to the exhibition.

Employee Participation

At Morgan Stanley, our employees are our best public offering! We are dedicated to supporting our employees’ personal charitable efforts.

Volunteerism

From park cleanups to one-on-one mentoring sessions, MorganStanley employees gave time to a wide range of local communityprojects and organizations across the globe.

In the U.S., more than 7,400 employees are actively enrolled in the Firm’s “What a Difference a Day Makes” program, each donating time to children in their communities. Thousandsmore also participate in organized one-time team efforts andongoing mentoring programs.

In London, over 400 people joined in the inaugural year of theEmployee Volunteering Programme, working as Reading andNumber Partners to children in two local primary schools andmentors at a secondary school. The employees contributed almost1,300 volunteer hours to the project, making it one of the largestcorporate efforts in Tower Hamlets.

In Hong Kong, more than 80 employees participated in the first annual Asia Pacific Volunteer Day. The event, organized by the Hong Kong Charity Committee, promoted volunteerismand direct involvement in community activities in Hong Kong.

In 2000, our employees individually contributed over $60 millionto charity through company initiatives.

Morgan Stanley Annual Appeal

In the U.S., Morgan Stanley employees raised more than $6 million through the Firm’s Annual Appeal — a fund-raising campaign that supports the Morgan Stanley Foundation, UnitedWays and local agencies. Over 22,000 employees participated,supporting more than 3,200 organizations.

Charity of the Year

In London, employees raised more than £178,000 through the Charity of the Year campaign, an initiative that raises money for charities chosen by employees. Through an addedpound for pound match by the Morgan Stanley InternationalFoundation, the Firm donated a total of £328,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care home nursing service and Richard HouseTrust, a children’s hospice.

Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York

Due to the efforts of more than 300 employees, Morgan StanleyChildren’s Hospital broke ground in November 2000. Ouremployees added to the Firm’s $10 million gift by personally contributing $45 million to build what will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced children’s hospitals in the world. The $120 million facility, part of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital family, is scheduled for completion in March 2003.

Volunteer Incentive Program

Morgan Stanley encourages its employees throughout the U.S. to donate their time and talent generously to charities. To bolstertheir efforts and foster relationships with our local communities,the U.S. Foundation provides grants through the VolunteerIncentive Program (VIP). Our VIP grants, typically rangingbetween $500 and $5,000, are awarded to health and human service charities where our employees are active and ongoing volunteers. In 2000, the Firm donated over $2.3 million to morethan 400 organizations through the VIP.

Matching Gifts

Morgan Stanley currently offers programs in both the U.S. and theU.K. that match a portion of employees’ personal contributions.

In the U.S., these programs support accredited educationalinstitutions and provided nearly $1 million to over 1,000schools in 2000.

In London, the Foundation runs the Employee Matching Grant Programme and matches employees’ fund-raising efforts for charities of their choice. In 2000, employees raised just over £205,000 for 31 different charities, and the Foundation contributed a further £100,000 in matching funds.

Morgan Stanley was the first Wall Street securities firm to committo help General Colin Powell and America’s Promise in their campaign to help youth. The outstanding work of our employeescontinues to be recognized as one of the strongest volunteer effortsin our industry.

Morgan Stanley blends financial and human capital with marketingresources to support a comprehensive campaign designed to provide fundamental resources for children. Among our manyactivities, the Firm encourages, recognizes and rewards employeeswho give at least 24 hours a year for youth.
