Inverted Motors for DrillingBasic Configuration Differences
– Conventional Motor Configuration Housing connected to drillstring and does not rotate
(connected to motor stator) Shaft internal to housing and rotates (connected to motor
rotor). Drilling tool attached to shaft. Fluid flow goes through motor and crosses over into shaft
channel before existing Electrical wires cannot go through motor
– Basic Inverted Motor Configuration Shaft connected to drillstring and does not rotating (connected
to motor stator) Housing rotates (connected to motor rotor) with tool attached Shaft has channels for flow and wires Fluid and wires can enter motor at any point- or not at all
IMBasic Inverted Motor Configuration
Inverted Motors for DrillingBenefits of IM Configuration
Allows use of advanced drilling techniques
Ultra high pressure / Abrasives / Acids/ bases
MWD (key drilling and directional measurements) and LWD (formation logging measurements) tools in/ at bit
Multiple motors (different sizes and rotation direction) on BHA/ drillstring
Short lengths of each motor allows ultra-short radius turns
