Introduction To Functional Neurology -‐ How the Nervous System Influences Muscle Tone and Posture
25th – 26th April 2015 Copenhagen, Denmark
Nicole Oliver, DC, MChiro, BSc(Hons), DACNB
Neurology has been at the heart of the Chiropractic profession since its very beginning. But it is only in recent years that advances in clinical neuroscience have allowed us to truly understand how our treatment affects the nervous system; and how this effect allows us to restore and preserve good structure and function within the musculoskeletal system. Although neuroanatomy and neurology form a substantial part of the chiropractic undergraduate curriculum, very few chiropractors use this knowledge in the day-‐to-‐day treatment of their patients; it tends to be used solely to rule out gross neurological pathology. This seminar will introduce you to the practical aspects of functional neurology focusing on how brainstem, spinal cord and peripheral nerve mechanisms influence muscle tone and posture. The emphasis will be on clinical applications and helping you to integrate your newly acquired skills and knowledge into everyday practice.
Course Content:
v How to treat rotator cuff impingement, tennis elbow, IT-‐band syndrome and plantar fasciitis more specifically and more effectively. How to treat the underlying cause and thus help prevent recurrence of these conditions.
v How to manage cervical and lumbar radiculopathies as well as peripheral entrapment neuropathies more successfully.
v How to deal with muscle imbalances, spinal instability, altered spinal curves and abnormal head posture caused by cerebellar or other functional brain imbalances.
v How to avoid undesirable side effects of treatment, such as excessive soreness, headaches, nausea or light-‐headedness. You will learn the basic principles of how neurons work, why it is important to respect their metabolic capacity, and why sometimes it might be better to adjust a finger rather than C1 in a neck pain patient.
v How to address brain imbalances using your existing techniques. v Novel treatment interventions, including coupled-‐motion adjusting, fast-‐stretching, vestibular stimulation,
as well as various physical and mental exercises that are designed to activate different regions of the brain.
"Puts neurology into clinically applicable learning. Good quality info – content rich, no B.S.! Best seminar I’ve attended – all chiros should do them” Nina Gurling
"The lecturing was clear and helpful and the demonstrations clear. They were not judgemental as to any lack
of knowledge." Jackie Beer
"Very clear and applicable concept to improve diagnosis & treatment. At last neurological tests are going to become more useful than just revealing big pathologies." Arnaud Geanty
"Excellent and easy to use course notes. Very helpful to have videos of technique."
Rachel McEwen
“The information presented has the potential to be life changing for the clinician and their patients. It offers detail that can focus the accuracy of your assessments
and treatments to a level that is otherwise unavailable. Within 5 years all of the best clinicians, trainers & practitioners will be following the functional neurological
approach. Get on board now or get left behind!” David Fleming
Seminar Instructor: Nicole Oliver, DC, MChiro, BSc(Hons), DACNB Nicole is one of only 13 practitioners in England who hold the Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (DACNB) qualification. Alongside private practice she lectures for Neuroseminars and teaches clinical applications of functional neurology at the majority of the UK Carrick Institute modules. In 2010 Nicole co-‐authored the book 'Depression Beater', and in 2011 she was invited to assist the American Chiropractic Neurology Board's exam panel. Nicole's other recent lecturing engagements have included the 2014 ECU convention in Dublin and the Scottish Chiropractic Association's 2013 Autumn meeting/seminar.
