What is ADSL?

ADSL provides high speed video and data communications to residences andbusinesses over standard telephone lines. ADSL service is provided by connecting apair of very high speed modems to each end of the phone line; one in the central office(ATU-C), and the other at the customer's premises (ATU-R).

Because ADSL is asymmetric, there is a measurable difference in the bit rate betweenthe upstream (how fast you can send data) and downstream (how fast you can receivedata) transmissions.

The 3Com ADSL Modem PCI utilizes full rate G.dmt. The speed and type of DSLyour modem uses, will be determined by the type of service you have ordered fromyour DSL provider.

A typical ADSL installation will require either a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service)Splitter or Micro filters to be used for your analog voice service. The use of thesedevices enables simultaneous usage of normal telephone service and the modem, withno interruption to the normal telephone service. Your DSL provider will normallysupply you with a Splitter or Micro filters and explain their usage.

Ordering ADSL Service

The 3Com ADSL Modem PCI has a 2-wire twisted pair standard telephone interfacewhich can be used with an ADSL connection from your telephone company or otherservice provider. The service to order depends upon the services that will beconfigured and enabled for the modem.

Using Quick View to verify yourConnectionThe 3Com ADSL Modem PCI automatically connects to your ADSL provider whenthe computer is started. This is a physical connection between your Modem and theService Provider. To connect to your Internet provider or to your Corporate Networkyou will need to make a connection using either an application supplied by them orMicrosoft Dial-up Networking. In order to make that connection you need to be surethat your modem is talking to the ADSL network. To verify this you can use the QuickView.

Quick View will be launched automatically when you start the computer and will placean icon in the tray on the bottom toolbar of your computers screen. If Quick View hasnot been added to the Startup group, you will need to manually start the applicationfrom the 3Com ADSL Modem PCI group by going to Start->Program Files->3ComADSL Modem PCI.

You will be able to see whether your ADSL connection is up by observing the trayicon. The following two graphics show examples of an established ADSL connectionand a disconnected ADSL connection.

Quick View tray icon showing connection is up

Quick View tray icon showing connection is down

The following graphic shows the large Quick View screen, which will display whenyou double-click the tray icon and give you more information about your connection.

If the connection is down, refer to the troubleshooting section of the on-line help.

Driver Problems

If the computer recognizes the PCI board correctly, but the 3Com ADSL Modem PCIis still not functioning, you might have a driver problem. First, you should make sureyou are installing the correct driver.

On the 3Com ADSL Modem PCI CD, there are different driver files for each possibleoperating system, distinguished by a 95, 98,98SE,ME, or 2K at the end of the .sysdriver filename. For example, the driver file for Windows 98 would be 3cwtw98.sys.Make sure you are installing the correct driver.

If you have installed the correct drivers and are still having a problem, you might wantto try reinstalling the drivers.

I didn't read the manual and I put in thecard first, and now I need to install thedriversIf you installed the modem before running the CD, then Windows Plug & Play willdetect the adapter and ask for the installation file for the modem. You will need tolocate the drivers on the CD, depending on the type of installation you are doing anduse this path for the Windows Plug & Play prompt.

If you have already started the Plug & Play installation, it is important that you do notcancel out of the installation once it has started. If this happens, then Windows may notrecognize the adapter in the Plug & Play mode of operation.

Use the table below to figure out where on the CD the appropriate drivers are located:

Connection Method to YourISP Windows Version Location on CD
