What is a Screwdriver?
A screwdriver is a tool used for loosening or tightening screws into wood or metal. It consists of a handle attached to a long, narrow shank, which is usually made of metal. Recently, the handle is usually made of a molded plastic and sometimes it is padded with a rubber coating.
Handles have been made of many things such as
wood, metal, and plastic.
The earliest written evidence of the use of screwdrivers was in Europe in the late 15th
century. The earliest screwdrivers had a pear shaped handle and were made for slotted screws. Over the next 300 years the only way we really know there were screwdrivers is because there were screws. In America, the first hand held screwdriver became available in the 1800’s.
There is no such thing as a left-handed screwdriver since it can be used with either hand in the same way.
A screwdriver is used by; grasping the handle and inserting the tip of the screwdriver into the end of the screw needing to be tightened or loosened. It is important to use the correct screwdriver for the type of screw you are using. There are several types of screw “heads.” Each type takes a specific screwdriver to tighten or
loosen it.
Some screwdrivers have multiple “bits” you can insert in the end to loosen or tighten many different types of screws.

THREE WAY SWITCH WIRING
Three-way switches are commonly used in
both residential and commercial electrical
installations. Three-way switches are used
when you want to control a light from two
different locations. Two examples of their
use would be either end of a long hallway or
the top and bottom of a stairway.
Three-way switches are wired by taking the
black (power) wire to one of the switches
hooking it to the “common” screw. This
screw is often identified by being colored
black. The white (neutral) wire is connected
to other white wires to maintain continuity.
The switches then need to be connected
together with a wire with three conductors.
The red conductor and the black conductor
need to be attached to the two remaining
screws on the switch. The white wire needs
to be attached to the other white wire with a
wirenut.
The black and red wires as well as the white
wire will need to be long enough to reach
the other switch. The black and red wires
will be connected to similar screws on the
iii
other switch. The white wire needs to be
connected to the white wire that is
connected to the light fixture. The black
wire from the light fixture needs to be
connected to the “common” screw on the
second switch. The way just described to
wire a three way switch is shown in the
diagram below.
However, there are other ways to wire a
three way switch as shown by the other
diagrams shown. It all depends on where
the power is coming from.
Introduction
GSL Electric is an electrical contracting company based in Sandy, Utah, specializing in
industrial and commercial work. The corporate offices are home to the project managers,
iv
estimators, accounting department, purchasing department, and corporate officers. This report
will focus on the corporate culture only, due to the differences in culture between the corporate
office and jobsite work areas at GSL Electric. The purpose of this report is to recommend GSL
Electric as a good place to work due to a positive corporate culture.
Company History
GSL Electric was founded in 1981 by Guy Moore, Don Taft Jr., and Craig Taft. The core values
that GSL was based are vision, commitment, and accountability. GSL changed to an employee
owned company in 1994 when Guy Moore retired and twelve employees bought his shares in the
company. GSL continues to be an employee-owned and operated company. “To date GSL
Electric has completed over 1000 industrial and commercial projects”. (Various Authors).
Methodology
The methodology used for collecting information encompassed electronic means, empirical
means, and print. I gathered much information from GSL Electric’s website. I interviewed
Lance Capell, the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of GSL Electric. I work
at GSL Electric in the corporate office as the purchasing manager, so I have interacted and
observed at the corporate office. Company newsletters were also used.
Results and Discussion
Mission Statement
The mission statement for GSL Electric is “Powering Forward Through Vision, Commitment,
and Accountability.” This is a very important concept to GSL Electric. It is important to be
moving forward, progressing. Powering is both an action word and a tie to the electrical
v
industry. GSL is progressing by using vision; with a clear understanding of where you want to
be and how you are going to get there, you can move forward. With commitment from each
employee to keep the vision at the forefront of everything that they do, GSL can continue
forward. Accountability as a company to each employee, and accountability from each
employee will also propel GSL forward.
Working Environment
The working environment at GSL Electric is a very open layout. There are some offices;
however, most of the work areas are cubicles. Employees in the corporate office frequently
visit the jobsites and employees from the jobsites frequently visit the corporate office. As a
result, the dress code in the office is mainly business casual, which in this case includes jeans.
When visiting jobsites, steel toe boots, hard hats, and safety glasses are required.
Political Climate
The political climate at GSL Electric is mainly conservative. Politics don’t appear to play a large
part in the office culture. The rivalry between Brigham Young University and the University of
Utah seems to have more of an influence in the office than political affiliation. “No matter the
political affiliation, a person needs a sense of right and wrong and a strong work ethic to fit in.”
(Capell). GSL is always looking to hire people with the correct values and attitudes.
