Introduction

The concept behind HKU’s four-year undergraduate curriculum is the totality of the student learning experience. As you enter university, you are likely to be bewildered by new demands and challenges that you seldom faced during secondary school education. You need to decide for yourselves where you want to go and what you want to achieve when you graduate. It is important that you have appropriate and realistic expectations of a university education and know how far you can go towards achieving your personal and academic goals, so that you will have a sense of achievement at the end of your first year as well as when you graduate.

This brochure aims to be a quick one-stop information hub to help you understand more about learning at HKU, adapt to university life and make better use of HKU’s support services, meet your learning buddies and develop academic and personal goals.

CEDARS Peer Connect and High Table

CEDARS has designed a Non-academic Induction Programme with a series of activities to prepare students for the psychological, intellectual and social challenges in university education. The CEDARS Peer Connect and High Table forms the core part of the Programme. It puts first-year undergraduates from different faculties and countries of origin into small groups. Each team of first year students is led by one current student who serves as a Student Induction Instructor (SII).

Under the guidance of CEDARS, SIIs will engage new students in a goal setting exercise, a community visit and a mingling session with teachers and alumni. The concluding event is a High Table at which participants make new friends while further developing a sense of pride and identity with the University.

First Year StudyUndergraduate Curriculum

HKU’s 4-year undergraduate curriculum adopts an enabling structure which assures flexibility for you to design your own combination of disciplinary majors, minors and electives. You will be able to optimise or change your subject choices within and outside your home Faculties with proper academic advice. The enabling curriculum structure creates opportunities for you to engage in diverse learning experiences such as academic exchanges, internships, work placements or community service.

08

* 6 credits = 120 – 180 student workload hours** Students are allowed to take additional credits of up to 6 credits per semester and graduate with a total of

288 credits (4-year)

For more information on the curriculum structure, regulations and selection of major(s) and minor(s), please refer to the website of Academic Advising Office: aao.hku.hk.

Towards the end or after your first year at the University, you may consider going abroad for exchange studies and/or engage in experiential learning required by your course(s). You are therefore encouraged to visit the website of the Office of International Student Exchange (OISE) (www.als.hku.hk/admission/exchange) to learn more about its support services to HKU’s incoming and outgoing exchange students, the exchange opportunities, partner institutions, eligibility and application procedures etc. so that you can plan ahead for your studies. You can also find useful information on non-academic support such as visa and financial assistance on the website of CEDARS-Campus Life (cedars.hku.hk/cl).

Academic Advising

At HKU, academic advising helps you understand the aims of university education, the available educational options and the paths that can be taken so that you can draw your own roadmaps to achieve your goals and monitor your own progress. Academic advising enables you to have greater satisfaction with your academic experience, better self-understanding and a sense of success in the achievement of personal and academic goals.

All first-year undergraduates will be assigned to a Faculty Academic Adviser upon registration. You are required to meet with your Faculty Academic Adviser once every semester in your first year of study to discuss different academic issues.

You can find out more from the Academic Advising Office's website: aao.hku.hk.

Common Core Curriculum

Students are normally required to take six 6-credit courses, one from each Area of Inquiry (AoI) and not more than two from any AoI. However, the number of courses required and the year and semester in which they are taken varies from programme to programme. Please refer to the Common Core Curriculum's website (commoncore.hku.hk) to find out the requirements for your programme.

The Common Core Curriculum has proved to be effective in creating cross-faculty and cross-disciplinary learning communities. Tutorials engage students from different disciplines in stimulating and in-depth discussions and have received high ratings from students.

Common Core Curriculum's website: tl.hku.hk/common-core-curriculum

Language Requirement and Pre-requisites

You are advised to pay attention to completing the language and pre-requisite course(s) required by your Faculty in your first year of study.

Some Faculties require students to complete certain introductory course(s) in their first year to facilitate smooth progression to senior years and better understanding of the subject in question. At the programme level, majors and minors may also require students to complete certain pre-requisite(s) in the first year, the failing of which may affect their taking of senior courses and declaration of the relevant major or minor. Please check with your Faculty for the details of the courses.

Accommodation and Student Residences

Presently, there are thirteen residential halls and three non-residential halls. There are also four Residential Colleges on Lung Wah Street, Kennedy Town offering new residential experience to 1,800 students.

The Residential Colleges have three distinctive features. First, students have a close engagement with the community. They can use their knowledge and skills to help build a better community.
