Proxy systems may be multivariate, nonlinear, spectral climate filters.
Use of “intermediate-class” proxy system models permits:
Paleo-observational network design/hypothesis testing.
Subtle interpretation of the environmental response.
Robust intercomparison of paleodata and climate model output.
Scientifically-defensible weak constraints for paleoreconstructions.
