International Tango TG - Intro - 1 Introduction to International Tango General - International Tango is in the smooth ballroom category of dances along with Waltz, Quickstep, Slow Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. Staccato movement and quick head changes are some distinct characteristics. International Tango is danced without rise or fall and usually no sway. This should make it easier to dance than the other smooth dances. Musical Timing - Technically the musical timing of International Tango is 2/4. That means two beats to one bar or measure of music. It is counted, however, 1 & 2 &, 1 & 2 &, etc. This seems like four beats to a measure or bar. The step or dance timing is QQS. Each “quick” is on a half beat and each “slow” is on a whole beat. This makes the first quick on 1, the second quick on &, and the slow on 2 &. If we try to choreograph a routine using this timing, it will soon become confusing on the cue sheet. We have many figures in routines that use a quarter beat and we call this a “&“ step. This step would use half a 1 or 2 beat or half a & beat. To eliminate confusion, this section of the manual will consider that the musical timing is 4/4, though it is technically incorrect. Using 4/4 will allow us to use the “&“ step and can put it in a cue sheet as a half beat in a measure. Footwork - The footwork in International Tango is different from the other smooth rhythms. With no rise or fall, there usually are no references to steps taken on the toe. Steps on the toe are normally after rising or preceding a lowering action. Instead of steps on the toe, in Tango they are on the ball of the foot (usually, but not always, this is on a backing step). There also will be many references to inside edge. This means that the inside edge is the first part of the foot to contact the floor. It could be the inside edge of the ball of the foot or the whole foot. On a tap, the inside edge of the toe is in contact with the floor. A tap does not take weight, because it only has contact with the floor. A forward step, by the man or the lady, uses a heel lead, no matter whether it is a “quick” or “slow”, in Closed Dance Position (CP) or Promenade (PP or SCP). We also must be aware of the positions of the feet, one to the other, when we bring them together or close them. When closing the feet, the ball of the right foot is at the instep of the left foot. It is the same for the man and the lady. This puts the man’s right foot slightly back from his left and the lady’s right foot slightly forward from her left. Placing the feet properly will tuck the knees in so that the back knee feels tucked behind the forward knee. When dancing the International Tango, the use of Contra (Contrary) Body Movement (CBM), Contra (Contrary) Body Movement Position (CBMP) and shoulder leading is essential. CBM is a body action while taking a step. In taking a forward step using CBM, the opposite shoulder must come forward also. CBM normally starts a turning figure. This, however; is not always true. A step completed with the feet on the same line and the body in contra is in CBMP. The most obvious example of this position is the Contra Check. A step using CBM could end in CBMP but does not necessarily have to. A step into Closed Position, from “outside partner”, (BJO or SDCAR), requires CBM, however; partners could end square to each other. It might not require CBM to end in CBMP. The through step with the inside foot in Promenade (SCP) is in

Introduction to International Tango

General - International Tango is in the smooth ballroom category of dances along with Waltz, Quickstep, Slow Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. Staccato movement and quick head changes are some distinct characteristics. International Tango is danced without rise or fall and usually no sway. This should make it easier to dance than the other smooth dances.

It is counted, however, 1 & 2 &, 1 & 2 &, etc. This seems like four beats to a measure or bar. The step or dance timing is QQS. Each “quick” is on a half beat and each “slow” is on a whole beat. TG - Intro - 2

CBMP, however; the shoulder is already forward and the step requires no body turn to be in CBMP. Shoulder leads will require the same foot and shoulder to move in the same direction, forward or backward. If in CBMP, the shoulder remains in its same position as the forward or backward step occurs. If the right foot and right shoulder are moving forward, we have a right shoulder leading.

Dance Position - The dance position for International Tango is different from the other smooth rhythms. It is more compact and the lady moves more to the left in the man’s right arm. Do not think of the man reaching further around the lady, but the lady moving further to her left. There is a lowering of the body through the legs so that there is contact between the dancers from the waist to the knees. The lady moves her left arm and hand to the underside of the man’s right arm and there should be a solid connection with these arms. The man bends his left arm more, so that the hand moves toward the lady’s head slightly. This is so the lady’s right arm will not be straight when she moves further to the left. The feeling, when we get into the proper position, is that we are down in the legs and up in the body. It is important to maintain this position and feeling throughout, even while performing picture figures.

Terminology - The terms Promenade Position (PP) and Semi-Closed Position (SCP) are the same. Promenade is the term that we will see in all the reference manuals used in International Ballroom. When we use the term “Banjo” (BJO) the ballroom definition is “Outside Partner”. For “Sidecar” (SDCAR) the ballroom definition is “Outside Partner Left Side”. These terms are also interchangeable. Most of the figures used in our higher level routines come from these manuals. We use many other ballroom terms for figures. We, therefore, must become more familiar with the remainder. We can use our own terminology, but we must understand theirs if we are going to use the figures out of their manuals. Let’s think of it as the best of both worlds.

Alignment - Following this introduction, each Figure Description will have a beginning alignment. This alignment is not the only alignment from which the figure can begin or end. Some starting point is necessary to show the amount of turn while accomplishing the figure. The actual beginning alignment, in a routine, is the choreographer’s prerogative. The step timing for each figure will be the timing used in the most common reference books. Do not consider this timing the only one to use. Again this is choreographers’ prerogative. If we describe a figure as danced QQS, it may also be correct if danced QQQ or QQ&.

Amounts of Turn - There are two amounts of turn noted in the figure Descriptions. One is the amount of turn made by the foot. This turn will be noted in the “Step & Direction” column. The other is the amount of turn which the body makes on a given step. We will note this turn in the “Body Turn” column. While dancing some figures, the feet will make more turn than the body, on a particular step. The body usually catches up on the next step. We note this by the term “Body Turns Later” or “Body Turns Less”.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing DRW and moving DLC. [Step 1.] Step straight back using the inside edge of ball heel of the left foot and with the left shoulder leading. [Step 2.] Step back ball heel on the right foot turning left face 1/8 turn in CBMP, backing COH. [Step 3.] Step side and slightly forward with the inside edge of the left foot turning 1/8 left to face DLW. [Step 4.] Close the right foot to the left foot slightly back and whole foot. End facing DLW still in Closed Position.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing and moving DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward toward

DLC with the right foot, heel leading and right shoulder leading. [Step 2.] Turning left face 1/8 turn, step forward in CBMP with the left foot, heel leading. [Step 3.] Step to the side and slightly back with the inside edge of ball heel with the right foot turning left face 1/8 turn. [Step 4.] Close the left foot to the right foot, slightly forward.

GENERAL NOTES

The Back Corté essentially is a backward walk with the man’s left (woman’s right) foot followed by a Closed Finish. It obviously is used to change the line of dance 90 degrees to the left. If the Back Corté begins in Contra Banjo Position, as it would if it followed a figure that ended with an Open Finish, then the foot positions will be different on the first step. Instead of being back with the inside edge of ball heel and a shoulder lead, it will be back, ball heel, in CBMP with the lady outside. The lady will be in Closed Position by the end of step two.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step side and forward on the left foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed Position. [Step 2.] Step forward and slightly across on the right foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. [Step 3.] Swiveling 1/4 turn right face on the right foot, step side and slightly back on the left foot ball heel across the lady’s line of dance into closed position. Man is backing DLC. [Step 4.] Step back ball heel with the right foot well under the body, ending with a slight body turn to the left. Weight should be kept forward causing the lady not to take a heel lead on step 4.

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step side and forward on the right foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed Position. [Step 2.] Step forward and slightly across on the left foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. [Step 3.] Step side and slightly forward ball heel on the right foot between the man’s feet into Closed Position facing DLC. [Step 4.] Step forward left using the whole foot into Closed Position, ending with a slight body turn left face.

GENERAL NOTES

On steps one and two, the steps are both side and forward as they are taken in Semi-Closed Position. On step three when the man crosses the lady’s track, he must not hinder her movement. He must keep his body moving along the line of dance. His left foot really moves side and back but ends as a back step, landing ball heel, not with the inside edge of the foot and swiveling to the heel. A more advanced way of dancing the Back Open Promenade is on step 4 to turn the body more to the left using a strong contra body movement, placing step 4 in CBMP.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure is sometimes cued as FORWARD SIDE BRUSH TAP. The use of this figure, in Tango, is much like a small change of direction in the other smooth rhythms. Take care not to "pop up" on step two. In Tango, dancers must remember to remain at the same level nearly all of the time.

TG - Fig 4 - 10

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step side & forward on the left foot, heel leading, in Semi-Closed Position. [Step 2.] Step forward on the right foot In Semi-Closed Position with a heel lead in CBMP. Start turning the lady into Closed Dance Position after taking weight. [Step 3.] Step side and slightly forward on the left foot, ball heel and your body turns slightly to the right. This turn is a preparation to step outside your partner in Banjo Position. [Step 4.] Turn the body sharply to the right while stepping forward with the right foot, outside partner in Banjo, on the whole foot. After taking weight on the right foot, make a turn further to the right to end facing DRW. This step should not progress toward reverse line of dance. It moves toward line of dance and the wall while the body is still progressing down line of dance. [Step 5.] Turning slightly right face, step back on the left foot LOD, ball heel, in CBMP in the Banjo Position, end facing DRC. [Step 6.] Starting to turn to the right take a small step side on the ball of the right foot. Continue to turn right face to end in Semi-Closed Position facing DLC ready to move DLC. With the turn completed, allow the heel to contact the floor. All weight is now on the whole foot. The left foot is slightly to the side and in contact with the floor, on inside edge of ball with no weight.

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step side & forward on the right foot, heel leading, in Semi-Closed Position. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot, in Semi-Closed Position, heel leading in CBMP. Start turning into closed dance position after taking weight. [Step 3.] Step side and slightly back on the right foot, ball heel, and the body turns slightly to the right. The man is preparing to step outside partner in Banjo Position. [Step 4.] Turning your body to the right, step back with the left foot in Banjo, ball heel. It should feel as though the foot is placed under your body. After you take weight on the left foot, continue to turn further to the right to end facing DLC. This step should not progress toward RLOD. It moves toward DLW and the while the body is still progressing LOD. [Step 5.] Step forward on the right foot LOD, heel ball, in CBMP and Banjo, outside partner. [Step 6.] Start turning right face on the right and step side and back with the left on the ball of the foot. Taking weight, continue to turn to the right to end in semi-closed position facing DRC ready to move DLC. After completing the turn, allow the heel to contact the floor. All weight is now on the whole foot with the right slightly to the side touching the floor on the inside edge of ball with no weight.

GENERAL NOTES The Chase is a moving figure. It moves along the chosen line of dance on all steps. Steps three and four curve to the right; however, they do not move in a direction opposite the first two steps. The body of the man turns to end backing for step five; but, he is still moving along line of dance. Step four, for the lady, which started as a back step, should be well under her body with a crossing action ready to push off, forward, on step five. Many dances, to date, have been choreographed to omit the last step of the figure and cued simply as CHASE. Instead they have used some type of Chassé. Step six can also be adjusted to keep the lady in Closed Dance Position. From there you can dance steps four five and six again making it a Double Chase.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving along LOD. [Step 1.] Step side and forward on the left foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed Position. [Step 2.] Step forward on the right foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. A slight indication of a body turn to the left, after the step, will cause the lady to start turning to Closed Position on her next step. [Step 3.] Step side and slightly forward on the left foot, on the inside edge of the whole foot. The foot will point diagonal to line and wall. [Step 4.] The right foot closes to the left, slightly back, whole foot. You are now in Closed Dance Position facing DLW.

TG - Fig 12 - 26

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving along LOD. [Step 1.] Step side and forward on the right foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. After the step, the man should suggest a left turn with a slight left face turn of his body. This will cause you to turn into Closed Dance Position between this step and step three. [Step 3.] Place the right foot side & slightly back on the inside edge of ball then heel. A small turn to the left to face center of the hall will be necessary. The foot should be pointing diagonal to reverse and center. Until releasing the left foot, the feet should be pigeon toed. The head should turn to Closed Position naturally. [Step 4.] After turning to the left, to match the body to the right foot, the left foot closes to the right, slightly in front, whole foot. You are now in Closed Dance Position and facing DRC. Delay closing the feet until you feel the man close his feet.

GENERAL NOTES

The Closed Promenade turns 1/8 right face. Some key actions occur in the Closed Promenade. The "through" action on step two is a three-track movement, as are all Semi-Closed steps. The man's left foot is on one "track," the lady's right foot is on another "track" and their inside feet share a "track." Therefore, the man must precede the lady in steps in Semi-Closed because of the couples' basic positioning. The slight body turn by the man between steps two and three is just that - slight. The term "body shrug" would be a better description and should be no more than 1/32. The purpose of the "shrug" is to cause the lady to place her third step in closed position pointing DRC. The third step leaves the lady in a very "pigeon-toed" stance for a moment. This will be until she releases the left foot and picks it up and closes it on step four. This "pigeon-toed" foot placement is very common in tango since most steps are placed, not swiveled. Note also that the lady's body catches up to the turn of the foot in the following beat by turning to the same alignment as the feet. As in all Tango basics take care to maintain the same height throughout the figure. It should be noted that the first three steps of Closed Promenade and Open Promenade are identical. It is not until step four that the lady knows which figure is being danced.

[Step 4.] With slight RF turn of body, lead lady to turn to Semi-Closed Position while stepping forward and slightly across on the right foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. [Step 5.] With slight LF turn of body, lead lady to turn to Closed Position while stepping side and forward on the left foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed Position. [Step 6.] Close the right foot to the left slightly back in normal Tango closed-feet position.

[Step 3.] While turning 1/4 LF, step side and back ball heel toward LOD with the right foot to momentary Closed Position. [Step 4.] Turn sharply to Semi-Closed Position and step through with the left foot ball heel toward LOD. [Step 5.] While turning 1/4 LF, step side and back on the right foot, ball heel toward LOD to Closed Position. [Step 6.] Close the left foot to the right slightly forward in CP.

GENERAL NOTES

On steps one, two, and four, the steps are side and forward as they are taken In Semi-Closed Position. Steps two and four are across the center line of the body, that is, through steps. The figure starts in Semi-Closed Position, to Closed Position, to Semi-Closed Position, and ends in Closed Position. The figure is identical to Double Open Promenade through the first five steps. This is because on step three the bodies are momentarily in Closed Position, even though the feet are open. Both Double Open Promenade and Double Closed Promenade are identical to both Open Promenade and Closed Promenade through the first three steps.

heel, toe pointing between DLW and WALL. [Step 4.] Keeping lady in Closed Position, sharply change sway and look right over the lady’s left shoulder, flexing left knee and touching the inside edge of the toe of the right foot toward RLOD.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Step back with the right foot, ball heel, toward DLC in CBMP. [Step 2.] Turning 1/4 left face, close the left heel to the right heel with toe pointed DLW, weighting the whole foot (no heel turn). [Step 3.] Continuing the turn on the ball of the left foot, step forward and side on the right foot, ball heel. [Step 4.] Sharply change sway and look well to the left, flexing right knee and touching the inside edge of the left foot toward RLOD.

GENERAL NOTES

Drop Oversway is one of the few figures that is executed differently depending on the starting position. When starting from Closed Position, Drop Oversway uses the first two steps to facilitate the turn to Promenade for the Oversway. When starting from Promenade Position with lead foot free, a single step is used for Oversway. The essence of the Oversway Position is the upright poise and slight sway to left for the man (right for the lady), head slightly left (right) in Promenade Position, and straight leg over the flat, weighted foot. It is particularly important that the Oversway Position be kept quite still until the Drop, which must be done very sharply.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing DLW and moving DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward, heel leading, with the left foot in slight CBMP preparing to indicate a right face turn to semi-closed position to the lady. [Step 2.] With a slight right face turn of the upper body to indicate Semi-Closed Position to the lady, step side and slightly back, ball heel, with the right foot toward RLOD, right side leading. [Step 3.] Step back with the left foot well under the body toward RLOD, ball heel, in CBMP and Fallaway Position. [Step 4.] Close the right foot, ball heel, slightly back of the left foot, still in Semi-Closed Position. The left foot releases to the inside edge of ball of foot as weight is taken on the right foot, preparing to move to LOD.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRC and moving DLW. [Step 1.] Step back toward DLW on the right foot, ball heel, in a slight CBMP. [Step 2.] With a slight foot swivel and body turn 1/4 on the right foot, step side and slightly back, ball heel, on the left foot toward RLOD

in Fallaway Position. [Step 3.] Step back, ball heel, with the right foot well under the body in CBMP and Fallaway Position. [Step 4.] Close the left foot, ball heel, slightly back of the right foot, in Semi-Closed Position preparing to move to LOD. The right foot releases to the inside edge of ball of foot.

GENERAL NOTES

Because the man will be leading a right face turn for the lady on step two, there should be less CBMP in step one. The slight right face turn for the man on step two is just that - slight, no more than 1/16. As is the norm in Tango, the man’s slight turn is amplified by the lady as she turns 1/4 right face to create the Semi-Closed Position of the Fallaway. Take care on the closing step, step four, not to settle in. Since it is a quick step, you must be prepared to move immediately into the next figure. The Fallaway Four Step, like the Four Step, is a figure danced in four quick steps and usually without turn, as measured by the man’s facing position. The figure moves from Closed Position DLW to Semi-Closed Position LOD. At the risk of helping some people but maybe confusing others, one might say that the first two steps of a Fallaway Four Step are similar to a Progressive Link, except that it will continue to move backward, so the second step is ball heel instead of inside edge of whole foot.

[Step 3.] Swiveling slightly right face on the right foot, step side and forward on the left foot ball heel slightly across the lady’s line of dance, so that she will remain in position after the turn. [Step 4.] Step back ball heel with the inside edge and ball heel of the right foot well under the body toward COH with right shoulder lead in Fallaway Position. [Step 5.] Step back ball heel with the left foot in CBMP and Semi-Closed Position turning the foot LF to point DLW. [Step 6.] Close the right foot to the left slightly back ending with a slight body turn to the left, causing the lady to close whole foot.

[Step 3.] Step forward heel leading on the right foot between the man’s feet in CBMP and Semi-Closed Position and turning almost 1/4 turn right face with the right foot to stay in position on the man’s right side. [Step 4.] Step back toward COH completing the turn with the inside edge and ball heel of the left foot, left shoulder leading in Fallaway Position. [Step 5.] Step back ball heel toward COH with the right foot in CBMP and Fallaway Position. [Step 6.] Close the left foot to the right slightly back ending with a slight swivel turn to the left, closing whole foot.

GENERAL NOTES

On steps one and two, the steps are both side and forward as they are taken in semi-closed position. On step three when the man crosses the lady’s track, he must not hinder her movement. He must keep his body moving along the line of dance. During steps 2 and 3, the man completes a 1/4 right face turn with his body. Note that throughout the lady’s third step her body is turning right face as she steps forward toward LOD such that by the time the step is completed, she is in CBMP body facing almost DLW.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, heel leading, in CBMP making 1/8 left face turn with the body. [Step 2.] Step side and back, ball heel, with the right foot, right shoulder leading. [Step 3.] Step back ball heel with the left foot with a slight right face turn of the upper body in CBMP, taking the lady to Banjo Position. [Step 4.] Step back and slightly side a small step using the ball of the right foot toward DRW and with a slight left face turn of the upper body to bring the lady to an in-line position. [Step 5.] With a sharp right face turn of the upper body, cause the lady to quickly turn to Semi-Closed Position, and turn the left knee in so that the left foot is in tap position using the inside edge of the ball of

the foot and lower onto the right heel.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRC and backing DLW. [Step 1.] Step back ball heel on the right foot in CBMP, making 1/8 left face turn with the body. [Step 2.] Recover side and forward on the left foot with the whole foot, left shoulder leading. [Step 3.] Step forward and slightly across with the right foot, heel leading, outside the man in CBMP. [Step 4.] Step forward on the ball of the left foot toward DRW into an in-line position. [Step 5.] Sharply turn 1/4 right face to Semi-Closed Position, turn the right knee in so that the right foot is in tap position using the inside edge of the ball of the foot, and lower onto the left heel.

GENERAL NOTES

The Five Step figure moves from closed position, through banjo, to an in-line position, and ending in semi-closed position. On step five, the man’s sharp right face turn is slight, no more than 1/16. As is the norm in Tango, the man’s slight turn is amplified by the lady as she turns 1/4 to create the Semi-Closed Position. The man will turn his head slightly left at the end of the figure. Note also that in step five the man’s right (and lady’s left) heel does not lower until the lady has completed her turn to Semi-Closed Position. This position must be achieved quickly and then held motionless until the end of the slow count. The Line Of Dance for a standard Five Step changes from DLW (in CP) to DLC (in SCP), a 1/4 left face turn. However, if it starts facing DLC, it will usually be overturned to end facing either DRW (2 turn), or wall (5/8 turn), or DLW (3/4 turn). The amount of turn over the whole of this figure is, or should be, determined by the amount of turn over the first two steps. In particular, the direction the man’s body is facing after step two should be the same direction it is facing after step five. This is accomplished by overturning step one and pivoting on the ball of the left foot between step one and step two.

[Step 4.] Slip forward with the left foot, ball heel, with a small step and a slight left face turn. The lady is now facing DRW and prepared to move DLC, still in Closed Position.

GENERAL NOTES

ALTERNATIVE Rhythm Quick, quick and, slow with timing 1, 2 , 2 , 2. Particularly when danced as QQ&S, step two should not be a long step. And particularly when danced as QQQQ, it is important after step four to be prepared to move immediately into the next figure. Because of the lady’s position in step two, her step is taken whole foot.

[Step 4.] With one continuous action, while swiveling 1/4 right face on the heel of the left foot draw the right foot to the left and take weight on the right foot after the turn; ending in SCAR facing DRW and moving RLOD. [Step 5.] Step forward in SCAR outside the lady with the left foot. [Step 6.] With a 1/4 turn LF of the upper body, step side and back toward RLOD with the right foot, ending in Banjo backing RLOD. [Step 7.] Step back with the left foot in Banjo toward RLOD. [Step 8.] Step back and slightly side a small step using the ball of the right foot toward DRW and with a slight left face turn of the upper body to bring the lady to an in-line position. [Step 9.] With a sharp right face turn of the upper body, cause the lady to quickly turn to Semi-Closed Position, and turn the left knee in so that the left foot is in tap position using the inside edge of the ball of the foot and lower onto the right heel.

[Step 4.] With one continuous action, while swiveling 1/4 right face on the ball of the right foot bring the left foot to the right and take weight on it. [Step 5.] Step back right in CBMP and SCAR position. [Step 6.] With a 1/4 left face turn of the upper body, step side and forward with the left foot and left shoulder lead to Banjo. [Step 7.] Step forward right in CBMP toward RLOD with a heel lead and staying in banjo. [Step 8.] Step forward on the ball of the left foot toward DRW into an in-line position. [Step 9.] Sharply turn 1/4 right face to Semi-Closed Position, turn the right knee in so that the right foot is in tap position using the inside edge of the ball of the foot, and lower onto the left heel.

GENERAL NOTES The Four-By-Five Step figure moves from Closed Position, through Banjo, to Sidecar, back to Banjo, to an in-line (closed) position, and ending in Semi-Closed Position. Although normally there is no swivel in Tango, step four is an exception. On step nine, the man’s sharp right face turn is slight, no more than 1/16. As is the norm in Tango, the man’s slight turn is amplified by the lady as she turns 1/4 to create the Semi-Closed Position. The man will turn his head slightly left at the end of the figure. Note also that in step nine the man’s right (and lady’s left) heel does not lower until the lady has completed her turn to Semi-Closed Position. This position must be achieved quickly and then held motionless until the end of the slow count. The Line Of Dance for a normal Four-By-Five Step changes from DLW (in CP) to LOD (in SCP), a 1/8 left face turn. However, if it starts facing DRW, it will usually be overturned to end facing either LOD (3/8 turn), or DLW (1/4 turn). The amount of turn over the whole of this figure is, or should be, determined by the amount of turn over the first two steps. In particular, the direction the man’s body is facing after step two should be the same direction it is facing after step nine. This is accomplished by overturning step one and, if necessary, step two.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, heel leading, in CBMP. [Step 2.] Step side and slightly back along RLOD with the right foot, ball heel. The right side is leading. [Step 3.] The left foot steps back along RLOD in banjo, ball heel, in CBMP. [Step 4.] Turning the body slightly right face, the right foot closes to the left, slightly back, in Semi-Closed Position preparing to move LOD. The Left foot releases to the inside edge of ball-of-foot.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRC and backing DLW. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, in CBMP, ball heel. [Step 2.] Step side and forward on the left foot, toward RLOD, on the whole foot. The left shoulder is leading. [Step 3.] Step forward on the right foot, in banjo and CBMP, along RLOD, heel ball flat. [Step 4.] With a sharp turn 1/4 right face,

close the left foot to the right, slightly back. The right foot will release to the inside edge of ball, ready to move LOD in SCP, when the left foot takes weight. The turn is completed before the closing of the feet.

GENERAL NOTES The Four Step is a figure danced in four quick steps and usually with 1/8 LF turn. However, up to 3/4 of a turn can be made across the entire figure. In such cases the cue term should be "Turning 4 Step." If a turn of 1/4 is made, the turn should be accomplished between steps one and two. The body positions on each step remains unchanged, whether using turn or not. The figure moves from Closed through Banjo to end in Semi-Closed. The slight right face turn for the man is just that - slight, no more than a 1/16. As is the norm in tango, the man's slight turn is amplified by the lady as she turns 1/4 to create the semi-closed position. The lady's turn causes the gaining of Semi-Closed Position. The man must turn his head slightly more to the left at the end of the figure or more commonly, as he steps into the next figure. Take care, on step four, not to "pop-up" (a common problem with closing steps in Tango, especially on a Quick step). The biggest problem with the fourth step, however, is not moving immediately into the next figure. Always pay close attention to prevent this "settling" into the last quick as if it were a slow.

Natural Twist Turn (continued)

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step side & fwd on the left foot, in Semi-Closed Position, heel leading. [Step 2.] Step forward on the right foot, In Semi-Closed Position, heel leading and in CBMP. There will be a slight turn to the right causing this step to slightly cross the lady's track. [Step 3.] Turning to the right, step side on the left foot, ball heel. This step is directly across the lady's track causing her to step between your feet. [Step 4.] The right leg crosses strongly behind the left at the thighs. Turn slightly to the right as you cross your legs to clear your right hip making a path for the lady. The ball of the right foot should be on the floor; however, most of the weight should still be on the left foot. [Step 5.] On the heel of the left foot and the ball of the right, begin twisting right face. The twisting should feel as if it is over the left leg. When the lady takes weight on this step, turn her to Semi-Closed Position. [Step 6.] Transfer all weight to the right foot. The left foot is now next to the right foot and in contact with the floor, inside edge of ball, in Semi-Closed Position ready to move DLC.

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step sd & fwd on the right foot, in Semi-Closed Position, heel leading. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot, In Semi-Closed Position, heel leading and in CBMP. The man will turn slightly to the right causing his step to cross, slightly, your track. [Step 3.] While turning slightly to the right, step forward on the right foot, heel leading. The man's step is directly across your track, so your foot goes between his feet. [Step 4.] The man will cross his right leg behind and turn to the right to clear his right hip. When feeling this action, turn to the right and step forward on the heel of the left foot with a strong left shoulder lead. This prepares for a step outside partner In Banjo Position. [Step 5.] As the man starts twisting to the right, step forward on the right foot in Banjo Position, heel leading. Move onto the toe of the right foot swiveling right face to Semi-Closed Position. [Step 6.] Step side and slightly back on the left foot, ball heel. The right foot is in contact with the floor, inside edge of ball, in Semi-Closed Position.

GENERAL NOTES

There are many important hints to help with the completion of this figure. On step two, the man crosses the lady's track; however, he must be careful not to hinder her movement. On step three the man must continue to move, as he steps across the lady's track, without stopping her forward progress. He must, as he turns to the right to take his side step, keep his body moving along line of dance. The foot really moves side and back but ends as a side step. As the man crosses his right leg behind the left, on step four, he must keep turning to the right. The right hip must "open the door" for the lady to pass him. The lady must not try to go around the man, but should think of going through him. He must stay over his left leg while twisting to the right on step five. This will make him "smaller" so the lady will not have as far to go. He must turn the lady on step five so that step six, for the lady, will be a back step. The amount of turn in this figure can be varied; but, it is very difficult for all but very proficient dancers to make a complete turn. Most of the time, even the best dancers only make 3/4 of a turn. That would take them to DLC with the starting alignment given for this manual. Under turning the figure to finish RLOD or DRC is an option. Step five, for the lady, will be the same always. The man controls the amount of turn during the twist.

[Step 3.] With slight LF turn of body, lead lady to turn to momentary Closed Position while stepping side and forward left, heel leading. [Step 6.] Step through with the right foot to contra banjo position, left shoulder leading.

[Step 6.] Step back with the left foot in CBMP to Banjo Position.

GENERAL NOTES

On steps one, two, and four, the steps are side and forward as they are taken in semi-closed position. Steps two and four are across the center line of the body, that is, through steps. The figure starts in Semi-Closed Position, to Closed Position, to Semi-Closed Position, and ends in Banjo Position. The figure is identical to Double Closed Promenade through the first five steps. This is because on step three the bodies are momentarily in Closed Position, even though the feet are open. Both Double Open Promenade and Double Closed Promenade are identical to both Open Promenade and Closed Promenade through the first three steps.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step side on the left foot, in semi-closed position with a heel lead. [Step 2.] Step forward on the right foot, in semi-closed position with a heel lead and CBMP. This step is slightly across the lady's LOD, with a slight right turn suggested. [Step 3.] With a pivoting action on the right foot, step across the lady's line of dance on the left foot, ending side and back. [Step 4.] Still turning right face on the left foot, with a pivoting action, step forward on the right foot, in CBMP. [Step 5.] Continuing the turn to right face on the right foot, the left foot moves to the side. It has contact with the floor on the inside edge of the ball, no weight.

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step side on the right foot, in semi-closed position, with a heel lead. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot, in semi-closed position with a heel lead and CBMP. The man will step across the lady's LOD, slightly, suggesting a right turn. [Step 3.] With a pivoting action, step forward, between the man's feet, on the right foot, heel leading. [Step 4.] Still turning to the right on the right foot, with a pivoting action, the left foot steps side and back in CBMP, ball-heel. [Step 5.] Continuing the right face turn, the right foot moves to the side. It has contact with the floor on the inside edge of the ball, no weight.

GENERAL NOTES

Step number five is really a continuation of step four and danced as part of it. Step five is not a sharp movement at the end of the figure. It is important for the man to make himself "small" and to "clear" his right side on step three. This will allow the lady to go through him and not around him on the pivoting action. If a Natural Rock Turn is to follow this figure, step four becomes step one of the Natural Rock Turn. There would be no turn into the Semi-Closed Position and the step would end in Closed Dance Position DLW, with a lunging action.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving along LOD. [Step 1.] Step side & forward on the left foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed Position. [Step 2.] Step forward on the right foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. A slight indication of a body turn to the left, after taking the step, will cause the lady to start turning to closed position on her next step. [Step 3.] Step side and slightly forward on the left foot, on the inside edge of the whole foot. The foot will point diagonal to line and wall. [Step 4.] The right foot moves forward to pass the left foot, heel leading in CBMP. Turn slightly right face, to step outside partner in Banjo.

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving along LOD. [Step 1.] Step side & FORWARD on the right foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. After taking the step, the man should suggest a left turn. This will cause you to turn into Closed Dance Position between this step and the next. [Step 3.] After making a small turn to the left to face center of the hall, place the right foot side & slightly back on the inside edge of ball then heel. The foot should be pointing diagonal to reverse and center. Until releasing the left foot, the feet should be pigeon toed. The head should turn to closed position naturally. [Step 4.] With a slight right face turn, the left foot moves back, ball heel in CBMP. You are now in Banjo with the man outside partner.

GENERAL NOTES

Some key actions occur in the Open Promenade. The "through" action on step two is a three-track movement as are all Semi-Closed steps. It resolves as she releases the left foot and picks it up and closes it on step four. This "pigeon-toed" foot placement is very common in tango since most steps are placed, not swiveled. As in all tango basics, take care throughout to maintain the same height. It should be noted that the first three steps of Open Promenade and Closed Promenade are identical. It is not until step four that the lady knows which figure is being danced.

Start in Closed Position DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot in CBMP. There is a body turn to the left when using CBMP; however, the foot moves straight forward. [Step 2.] Start a forward step with the right foot, small step. Turning the body left face so that the foot ends stepping side and back. The body is facing diagonal to reverse line and center and the foot pointed almost to reverse line of dance. [Step 3.] Step back on the left foot, down line of dance with the left shoulder leading in Closed Position, facing diagonal reverse line and wall. [Step 4.] Step back toward line of dance on the right foot turning 1/8 left face. [Step 5.] Turning slightly left face, step side and slightly forward on the left foot, pointing to diagonal line of dance and wall. [Step 6.] Turning 1/4 left face, close the right foot to the left, slightly back, in Closed Dance Position facing DLW.

LADY

Start in Closed Position backing DLC. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot using CBMP. There is a body turn to the left and you should get the feeling that you are stepping on your little toe as you move back. [Step 2.] Place the heel of the left foot next to the heel of the right in a "V" shape. The left foot should be pointing almost to line of dance. The body is facing diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 3.] Turning to the left, with a right shoulder lead step forward on the right foot down line of dance in Closed Position. Your body should be facing diagonal to line of dance and center. [Step 4.] Step forward on the left foot turning slightly to the left facing LOD. [Step 5.] Step forward on the right foot while turning left face. This will cause the step to end side and back. You will be facing diagonal reverse line of dance and center. [Step 6.] The left foot closes to your right, slightly forward, in Closed Dance Position facing DRC.

GENERAL NOTES The figure turns 3/4 LF.

To differentiate between an Open Reverse Turn and a Reverse Turn it is necessary to recognize that an Open Reverse Turn, whether the lady is in-line (CP) or outside (BJO), involves progression between steps 2 and 3. Where as the Reverse Turn does not have progression between steps 2 and 3. Refer to the first three steps of the Basic Reverse Turn (IT- 15) [also known as 3 steps of a Viennese Turn].

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Closed or Banjo Position following a step back on the right foot with a right shoulder lead. [Step 1.] Take a back step on the left foot in CBMP and Banjo, ball heel. The lady steps outside partner. After taking weight on the left foot, turn your body slightly right face. This allows the right hip to open the door for the lady to swivel left face. The right foot will cross in front of the left as the lady swivels. [Step 2.] Step forward on the right foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed Position, heel leading. [Step 3.] Lead the lady to Closed Dance Position with a slight body turn to the left. The left foot will end slightly to the side with no weight and almost closed to the right foot. The inside edge of the ball of the foot will be in contact with the floor.

LADY Closed or Banjo Position following a step forward on the left foot with a left shoulder lead. [Step 1.] Step forward on the right foot in CBMP and Banjo, heel leading. Roll onto the ball of the foot and the man will cause you to swivel left face into Semi-Closed Position. The left foot will close almost to the left as you swivel. Do not allow the left foot to pass the right foot until you take the next step. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed Position, heel leading. [Step 3.] Turn to Closed Dance Position when the man makes a slight turn to the left with his body. The right foot will end slightly to the side. The inside edge of the ball of the foot will be in contact with the floor.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure can be danced with turn to the left, right or with no turn. This description is without turn. If the figure is turned left or right the man will keep his right leg extended on step one. He can then point his right leg in the direction he wishes to go. With no turn he can allow the leg to cross in front of the other. It is very important that the man moves his right hip out of the lady's way so she can swivel to Semi-Closed Position. If the right hip blocks the lady she will be unable to swivel to the direction the man intends to move. The man must not dump the lady out of the swivel by raising his right shoulder or tilting the left side down. In International Tango the left side is always high. Both the man and the lady must stay down on step three avoiding a tendency to pop up. Note 1 The directions presented above are only for showing body turn during this figure. The

figure can be started from any direction if the last step the man took was a back step on the right foot with the right shoulder leading.

Note 2 The man can turn left, right or not at all during this figure. The amount of turn that

the lady makes will depend on which direction the man turns.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Banjo Position, with head and feet facing LOD, but body facing DLW. [Step 1.] Step back left under body into CBMP, turning body slightly right face which will get the right hip out of the lady’s way and will cause the right leg, which remains forward with toe in contact with the floor, to slightly cross in front of the left. Turn the lady to SCP.

LADY Start in Banjo Position, with head and feet facing RLOD, but body facing DRC. [Step 1.] Step forward on the heel of the right into CBMP. Roll onto the ball of the right, swiveling the right foot approximately 3/8 right face to SCP LOD. For better balance, keep the inside edge of the left toe in contact with the floor. The left foot will close almost to the right foot as you swivel. The feet will be turning more than the body.

GENERAL NOTES

It is very important for the man to turn his body right face moving his right hip out of the lady’s way to allow her to swivel to SCP. Also, the lady should not move her left foot through until the next step.

Oversway (from Closed Position) (continued)

GENERAL NOTES

Oversway is one of the few figures that is executed differently depending on the starting position. When starting from Closed Position, Oversway uses the first two steps to facilitate the turn to Promenade for the Oversway. When starting from Promenade Position with lead foot free, a single step is used for Oversway. The essence of the Oversway Position is the upright poise and slight sway to left for the man (right for the lady), head slightly left (right) in Promenade Position, and straight leg over the flat, weighted foot. If the Oversway is followed by a Drop, it is particularly important that the Oversway Position be kept quite still until the Drop.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position moving DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, with a heel lead, ending in CBMP. [Step 2.] Turn the body slightly to the right (like taking the right side away from the lady). Place the right foot to the side and back from the left. The right foot moves forward, the body turn causes it to end side and back. The weight should be on the inside edge of the whole right foot. The left foot should still be in contact with the floor and on the inside edge of the ball of the foot (no weight). The feet should be parallel to each other and pointing DLW in Semi-Closed Position ready to move LOD.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Step bk on the right foot, ball-heel (whole foot) in CBMP. [Step 2.] Swiveling right face on the right foot, as the man turns to the right, place the left foot to the side and back from the right. Your weight should be first on the inside edge of the ball of the left foot then go to the heel (whole foot). The right foot should still be in contact with the floor and on the inside edge of the ball of the foot (no weight). The feet should be parallel with each other and pointing DLC in Semi-Closed Position ready to move LOD.

Progressive Link (continued)

TG - Fig 3 - 8

GENERAL NOTES

A properly executed progressive link has such a dramatic look to it that most inexperienced dancers tend to overdo the figure. With this figure, as with most tango figures, less is best. A few of the common mistakes made by the man are:

1. He steps in a backward direction on step two. The lady cannot stay behind the man's right hip if he takes a backward step after turning to the right.

2. He tries to turn the lady with the arms and upper body instead of with his hips and legs.

3 He drops the left shoulder. The left shoulder is always high in International Tango.

A few of the common mistakes made by the lady are:

1. She rises or pops up on step two (a common mistake of the man, also). 2. She steps forward with left foot, on step two, then swivels on the left to SCP. 3. She comes off the man's hip during the turn, on step two, and ends up ahead of

the man in SCP. Consider dancing the figure aQQ instead of QQ. The lady would dance aQ- and the man would dance a-Q. This timing makes it look snappier and is easier to dance and would put the lady on her right foot slightly before the man is on his left. It also gives the man an opportunity to adjust to the lady's position. The change in direction of movement, in relation to LOD, for this figure is 1/8 to the left, i.e., DLW to LOD. Choreographers should be careful when using this figure in a routine. Do not ask the dancer to do more turn than is normal for this figure.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Closed Dance Position, facing and moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot with a heel lead, ending in CBMP. [Step 2.] The right foot starts to move forward. Without passing the left foot, place the right foot slightly side and back of the left. Take weight on the inside edge of the whole foot. [Step 3.] Step forward on the left foot, heel leading and in CBMP.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position, facing RLOD and moving LOD. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, ball-heel and in CBMP. [Step 2.] The left foot starts back toward the right foot but does not pass it. Place the left foot slightly to the side and forward of the right. Take weight on the inside edge of the ball then lower to the heel. [Step 3.] Step back on the right foot, ball-heel and in CBMP.

Progressive Side Step (continued) International Tango

TG- Fig 2 - 6

GENERAL NOTES

The progressive side step is normally used as a linking step between figures. When taking the first step from normal Closed Dance Position, CBM will be necessary to end in CBMP on step one. At the end of step one, the body facing direction would not be to LOD; however, it would not be to DLC either. The direction of movement would still be forward with no change in direction. CBM is not required if step one is taken from a right shoulder lead (such as a right foot walk). For the variation of a 3/8 turn to the left, take step one heel to ball for the man and ball for the lady with a swivel to the left before placing the foot on step two. Place the foot in the same relative position to the other as if there was no turn. That makes the turn occur between steps one and two. Dancers must maintain the same height throughout the figure. There is no rise between steps one and two. There is a natural tendency to "pop up" or have a "skipping" type of action between steps one and two, but this must be avoided. The dancers must remember to stay very flat. Turning the Progressive Side Step as much as 3/8 to the left between steps 1 & 2 is an acceptable variation.

GENERAL NOTES Both dancers must not raise or "pop up" on step three of this figure. Turning this figure 1/8 to the right is an acceptable variation. The man would turn slightly to the right, between steps two and three. The lady would have less turn to make in order to assume closed dance position.

right foot closes to the left, on the whole foot. You remain in Semi-Closed Dance Position facing DLW. [Step 5.] Quickly tap the left foot to the side. Remain in Semi-Closed Dance Position and have the inside edge of the toe of the left foot in contact with the floor without weight.

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving along LOD. [Step 1.] Step side and forward on the right foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot, in CBMP and Semi-Closed along LOD, heel leading. [Step 3.] Step side and forward on the right foot, heel leading in Semi-Closed Position. The foot should still be pointing DLC. [Step 4.] The left foot closes to the right foot, on the whole foot. You are still in Semi-Closed Dance Position. [Step 5.] Quickly tap the right foot to the side in Semi-Closed Position. You will have the inside edge of the toe in contact with the floor with no weight.

GENERAL NOTES

Some key actions occur in the Promenade (1/4 beat). The "through" action on step two is a three-track movement as all Semi-Closed steps are. The man's left foot is on one "track," the lady's right foot is on another "track" and their inside feet share a "track." Therefore, the man must precede the lady in steps in Semi-Closed because of the couples' basic positioning. The man must take special care to not indicate the body turn used in the other promenades (closed and open). Notice also that we show a five action figure instead of the usual four. This is to create the closed tap action on the final step. Care should always be used on taps to keep the knee veered in and the heel off the floor. Think of keeping the upper legs parallel. The heel is off the floor, but only slightly. If you lift it so that you have the heel high off the floor you will lose the position of the left leg. As in all Tango basics take care to maintain the same height throughout, especially on the close/tap. The figure also can be danced without the tap and syncopation, in which case the figure is called PROMENADE. Step four would be the end of the figure. The left foot for the man and right foot for the lady would be released, after the closing step, without the tap. The tap gives more of a tango look to the figure and helps keep the left side up. There is also another International Tango figure which starts in Promenade position with only has 2 steps, called PROMENADE TAP. it’s timing is SQQ and is like steps one and two of PROMENADE followed by a tap.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in closed position DLW. [Step 1.] Step sharply forward and side on ball of

right foot slightly between lady’s feet with right shoulder lead, place foot flat and relax

right knee, keeping left foot in place with straight leg and looking at partner. As soon

as weight is transferred to right foot, start right face body roll. [Step 2.] Continue

rolling body up to 3/8 RF and change to LF roll recovering to the left foot, pulling the

right foot toward the left foot. [Step 3.] Continue to turn the body LF slipping the

right foot past the left and stepping back on the right foot to end facing DLC.

LADY

Start in closed position DRC. [Step 1.] Step sharply backward and side on ball of

left foot with left shoulder lead, place foot flat and relax left knee, keeping right foot in

place with straight leg and looking well left. As soon as weight is transferred to left

foot, start right face body roll. [Step 2.] Continue rolling body up to 3/8 RF and

change to LF roll recovering to the right foot, pulling the left foot toward the right

foot. [Step 3.] Continue to turn the body LF slipping the left foot past the right and

stepping forward on the left foot to end facing DRW.

GENERAL NOTES

The body roll is a rotation of the bodies around an imaginary line that extends from a

point on the floor between the man’s left and the lady’s right foot and extends

between their heads upward and outward.

The right face body roll, started at the end of step 1, is continued through the first

half of step 2, then reversed during the last half to a left face body roll which then

merges into a left face turn of the figure at the end of step 2, with the turn completed

at the end of step 3.

The amount of turn of the figure on step 3 may be as little as 1/8 or as much as 3/8,

with 1/4 being typical.

Rock Turn (continued) International Tango

TG - Fig 36 -74

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing and moving DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the right foot heel leading, suggesting a right turn, right shoulder leading. [Step 2.] Turning 1/8 right face, step side and back on the inside edge of ball heel of the left foot toward COH. [Step 3.] Transfer weight back to the inside edge of ball heel of the right foot, turning right face almost 1/8 turn, right shoulder leading. [Step 4.] Step straight back with a small step using the inside edge of ball heel of the left foot and with the left shoulder leading. [Step 5.] Step back ball heel on the right foot turning left face 1/8 turn in CBMP, backing COH. [Step 6.] Step side and slightly forward with the inside edge of the left foot turning 1/8 left to face DLW. [Step 7.] Close the right foot to the left foot slightly back and whole foot. End facing DLW still in closed position.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRC and moving DLW. [Step 1.] Step back with the inside edge of ball heel of the left foot, left shoulder leading. [Step 2.] Turning right face 1/8 turn, step forward and to the right between the man’s feet with the right foot, heel leading. [Step 3.] Moving the left foot slightly leftwards, rock back on the inside edge of ball heel of the left foot, left shoulder leading. [Step 4.] Step forward a small step toward DLC with the right foot, heel leading and right shoulder leading. [Step 5.] Turning left face 1/8 turn, step forward in CBMP with the left foot, heel leading. [Step 6.] Step to the side and slightly back with the inside edge of ball heel with the right foot turning left face 1/8 turn. [Step 7.] Close the left foot to the right foot, slightly forward.

GENERAL NOTES

The man’s second step is side and slightly back and checking for the forward rock of the third step. This implies that the ball of the man’s right foot does not leave the floor. This is why the man’s third step, though forward, is using the inside edge of ball heel, rather than heel leading. The fourth step is in fact a step, not just a transfer of the weight back onto the foot, like a recover step. Note also that with the exception of the beginning position (step 4), the last four steps of the Rock Turn are the same as a Back Corté. The Rock Turn is sometimes called a Natural Rock Turn since it initially turns to the right.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing DLW. [Step 1.] Keep the legs flexed and step forward DLW with right foot, heel leading, rotating the body RF 1/8. [Step 2.] Keep the right leg flexed and the left side forward as the lady completes the Rondé. Allow the left foot to draw forward, toward the right foot, and then transfer weight back to the ball of the left, ending in SCP. [Step 3.] Pull the right foot back past the left, turning 3/8 LF to CP DLC.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRC. [Step 1.] Keeping the legs flexed, step back DLW with the left foot, taking a small step, ball/heel. Taking weight on the left foot, begin a clockwise Rondé with the right foot. Turn the head to the right and keep the right toe pointed down.

TG - Fig 49 - 2

S#8 2004

Execute the Rondé from the hip while keeping the right hip forward, toward the man, ending in SCP. [Step 2.] Completing the Rondé, place the right foot behind the left foot. Transfer weight to the right foot. [Step 3.] Turn left face and slip the left foot forward into Closed Position. Continue left face rotation to end facing DRW.

GENERAL NOTES The Rudolph Rondé requires good balance to execute. It is critical that the man soften his right knee during the first step and maintain an upright position. Rotating the body through the man’s right leg and hips allows the partners to stay as square to each other as possible. This will help the man to avoid leading with his right hip. Since Tango is a “down” dance, a floor Rondé is usually more appropriate than an Aerial Rondé. The Rondé is normally given more than one beat of music, with the recovery and slip pivot danced more quickly in comparison.

Same Foot Lunge is a member of the class of picture figures. The same foot lunge

starts in an unusual position with the man almost in closed and the lady more in a

semi-closed position with the outside of her left thigh against the inside of the man’s

right thigh. The figure can have various facing directions and timings.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION MAN Start in right lunge position with body and trailing foot (L) facing WL and supporting foot (R) pointing DRW. [Step 1.] On & count further compress right knee. [Step 2.] Staying low, step side onto left foot turning body about 1/8 to right and head well to left. [Step 3.] Take two full slows to drag right foot slowly toward left foot. As you do so, rise and develop left side stretch, turn head to right and body to left. End in closed position facing WL except weight is on left foot and you are looking at woman. [Step 4.] Close R to L and lose left side stretch. [Step 5.] Lower, turn feet 1/8 to left, look to left and point left foot forward and side in SCP.

LADY Start in right lunge position with body and trailing foot (R) facing COH and supporting foot (L) pointing DRC. [Step 1.] On & count further compress left knee. [Step 2.] Staying low, step side onto right foot turning body about 1/8 to right and head well to left. [Step 3.] Take two full slows to drag left foot slowly toward right foot. As you do so, rise and develop right side stretch, turn head to right and body to left. End in closed position facing COH except weight is on right foot and you are looking at man. [Step 4.] Close L to R and lose right side stretch. [Step 5.] Lower, turn feet 1/8 to right, look to right and point right foot forward and side in SCP.

GENERAL NOTES

The knee compression and change of weight of steps 1 and 2 are staccato with a hold (in standard tango style) of the position achieved by step 2 but step 3 lasts for 2 slows and the development or rise, stretch, and turn during this step are slow and continuous using the entire 4 beats. The partners separate and look apart rapidly on step 2 but pull back together and develop eye contact slowly on step 3. The closing of feet and entry to promenade position of steps 4 and 5 are again staccato in standard tango style. The head styling recommended here is optional. Some professionals prefer to look at each other during the entire separation and drag and others prefer still other options.

MAN On step 2 allow the arms to “breathe” so that the upper bodies can stretch well apart.

LADY On step 2 hang back in the man’s right arm to allow the bodies to stretch well apart.

[Step 4.] Slowly extend R forward toward LOD and sway left, like a lunge line.

GENERAL NOTES

Stalking Walks can be modified in many ways by the choreographer. There may be only one walk or any number of walks. They can begin with either foot. Steps/actions listed above can have alternative timing, such as combining the first two slows (and subsequent pairs of slows) into a single slow, normally written as S& in order to designate the two actions (the step and the point thru). The figure can also be done in Shadow Position, both dancers on the same foot.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Using CBM step forward on the left foot, heel leading on (not across) the line of the right foot. The direction of movement does not change, therefore the feet will end in CBMP. [Step 2.] Step forward with the right foot, heel leading, with the toe on (not across) the line of the left foot. The body position will remain unchanged from the ending position of the first step, so the right shoulder will be leading.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing RLOD, backing LOD. [Step 1.] Using CBM step back on the right foot, toe heel. The direction of movement does not change so the feet will end in CBMP. [Step 2.] Step back with the left foot, toe heel. The body position will remain unchanged from the ending position of the first step, so the left shoulder will be leading.

International Tango

Tango Walks (continued)

TG - Fig 16 - 34

GENERAL NOTES

The tango walk always gives the impression that it curves to the left. Normally the step with the right foot moves forward with the right shoulder leading but with no turn. Because of CBM the body has changed facing directions and it appears that a turn was made. If a line were drawn on the floor, both steps would be on the same line. If two additional walking steps were taken the line on the floor would change direction to the left. Tango walks can curve to the left by turning further to the left while stepping forward with the right foot. This action might be appropriate if the next figure to be danced was a reverse or left turning figure. A typical amount of turn might be 1/8 LF turn for two steps (forward or backward). While dancing the Tango Walks (for that matter, any backing step) the lady must remember to "evacuate" the free leg when she moves onto her heel. This makes for better partner movement as the lady's leg would already be out of the way of the man's moving leg. While the lady moves into the next step early, the man should delay moving his free leg forward. The delay should only be what the music or tempo will allow. Do not, however; lose the musical timing.

S#9 2005

GENERAL NOTES

Throwaway Oversway is a member of the class of picture figures. Keep hips to

partner during this figure. Keep hip of the extended leg well toward the partner.

Maintain upright body poise with weight over the standing leg. May be performed

facing any direction.

This figure may also be entered from Closed Position facing reverse line of dance (see

Waltz description of this figure).

The Throwaway Oversway may also overlap with other figures. For example, step 1

may also be step 3 of an Open Telemark. Such combinations lead to a wide range of

timings in the execution of the figure.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Closed Dance Position DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot using CBM to start the left turning action and ending with the feet in CBMP. [Step 2.] Start the right foot moving forward. The body will still be turning to the left so that the step will end side and back. Do not step forward then swivel the foot. The foot should be placed in position. [Step 3.] While the body is still turning to the left place the left foot so that it is crossed in front of the right foot. The toes should be closer together than the heels of the feet. [Step 4.] Step back on the right foot with CBM to continue the left turn. [Step 5.] The left foot starts back then the toe will be turned out to point to DLW. The foot has ended with a side and forward step and completed it's amount of turn but the body has not. The body will turn less than the feet. [Step 6.] Close the right foot to the left foot. The body will complete it's turn to be almost to DLW.

LADY

Start in Closed Dance Position ready to step back DLC. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot using CBM and ending in CBMP. [Step 2.] The left foot starts back then the toe will be turned out to point to LOD. The foot has ended side and forward and completed it's amount of turn but the body has not. The body will turn less than the feet. [Step 3.] Close the right foot to the left foot. The body will complete it's turn to be almost to LOD. [Step 4.] Step forward on the left foot using CBM. [Step 5.] Start the right foot moving forward. The body will still be turning to the left so that the step will end side and back. Do not step forward then swivel the foot. The foot should be placed in position. [Step 6.] Close the left foot to the right foot.

GENERAL NOTES

The Viennese Turn with Closed Finish (also known as the Basic Reverse Turn in ballroom) typifies most Tango turns in that the turning action is sharp (usually on a single beat or half beat) and there is little or no swiveling of the foot. On steps one, two, four and five there is very little turn (one eighth across those steps). On step two for the man and step five for the lady, the foot is toed in strongly creating a momentary "pigeon toed" effect which disappears as the next weight change is taken and the toed-in foot is released. There is a strong, sharp body turn on steps three and six. The feel of the turn should be "quick, quick, turn, hold" instead of making the turn across the two beats of the slow. The strong turn also creates the crossing action of the man's feet on step three. Remember there is no rise or fall in Tango and care must be taken on step three not to drop into the foot cross.

should be placed in position. [Step 6.] While the body is still turning to the left

place the left foot so that it is crossed in front of the right foot. The toes should be

closer together than the heels of the feet.

GENERAL NOTES

Although standard timing for the Viennese Turns is QQS QQS using two measures,

however, they are frequently danced in a single measure using QQ& QQ& timing.

As with the Viennese Turn with Closed Finish, the turning action is sharp (usually on

a single beat or half beat) and there is little or no swiveling of the foot. On steps one,

two, four and five, there is very little turn (one eighth across those steps). On step

two for the man and step five for the lady, the foot is toed in strongly creating a

momentary "pigeon toed" effect which disappears as the next weight change is taken

and the toed-in foot is released. There is a strong, sharp body turn on steps three

and six. The feel of the turn should be "quick, quick, turn, hold" instead of making

the turn across the two beats of the slow. The strong turn also creates the crossing

action of the man's feet on step three and the lady’s feet on step 6. Remember there

is no rise or fall in Tango and care must be taken not to drop into the foot cross.
