AGENDA

¢ What is B-RAS? ¢ Why we use it? ¢ Its functions/tasks¢ Brief view of network topology which consist of B-RAS

Page 4: Introduction to BRAS

¢ Broadband Remote Access Server is a specialized server based at an ISP network that facilitates the convergence of multiple Internet traffic sources. (These sources include cable, DSL, Ethernet or

broadband wireless) It routes traffic to and from broadband remote access

devices, including DSL access multiplexers and theISP's network.

WHAT IS B-RAS?

Page 5: Introduction to BRAS

¢ The BRAS sits at the core of an ISP's network, and aggregates user sessions from the access network.

[So far as I am aware of and lazy to research RedbackNetworks is a company which provide powerful BRAS/BNG(SmartEdge service gateway). This company was acquired byEricsson in December,2006]

WHAT IS B-RAS? (CONT.)

Page 6: Introduction to BRAS

¢ The key benefits of using it are: They provide a single point for change control B-RAS is a common, access-agnostic operational

model It is multiservice access node (MSAN) independent

<If network changes are required, it’s better to make changes at a single B-RAS server than at dozens of devices.

☻Sometimes we do not need to have WHY to everything. It is just something has to be used!

WHY WE USE IT?

Page 7: Introduction to BRAS

¢ Aggregates the circuits from one or more link access devices

¢ Provides layer 2 connectivity through either transparent bridging or PPP sessions over Ethernet or ATM sessions

¢ Enforces quality of service (QoS) policies¢ Provides layer 3 connectivity and routes IP traffic

through an ISP’s backbone network to the Internet…
