But it was established only in 1997 under Pokhara University Act, 1997 in the second tourist destination city, Pokhara. Right Honorable Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic Nepal is Chancellor, and Honorable Minister for Education is the Pro-Chancellor of the University. Vice Chancellor is appointed by Right Honorable Chancellor and he is the principle executive officer of the University. He is assisted by Registrar in financial management and general administration. Pokhara University, non-profit autonomous institution, is partially financed by the Government of Nepal and partly by the revenue raised from the students and affiliated colleges. LocationPokhara University is located in LekhnathMunicipality of Kaski district, thirteen kilometer eastto the heart of the Pokhara city. It has already built itsacademic complex in the serene and scenic locationof seven lake city, Lekhnath, in the lap of thebeautiful Himalayan range and peaks such as Mt.Machhapuchre and Mt. Annapurna. In addition,Begnas lake and Rupa lake are walking distance of itsacademic complex and central office. It is planning todevelop the infrastructure for School of EngineeringSciences on the bank of Khudi River and School ofMedical Sciences on the bank of Seti River, fiveminute walking distance from Prithivi High Way.Local community is generous to endow the land inthe scenic and beautiful location for other potentialschools and research center such as School ofEducation and Sports, School of Tourism and HotelManagement, and Herbal Research Center.

Decision Making BodyUniversity Senate: It is the supreme decision makingbody on policies, budget, and rules and regulations.Right Honorable Prime Minister is the ex-officiochairperson of the Senate. Honorable Minister ofEducation chairs the meeting of the Senate in theabsence of Right Honorable Prime Minister, and ViceChancellor chairs the meeting in the absence of bothRight Honorable Prime Minister and HonorableMinister of Education. Senate is composed of therepresentatives from District DevelopmentCommittee, Municipalities, industrialists, farmers,social workers, academicians, donors, Ministry ofEducation, University Grants Commission, HigherSecondary School, Nepal University TeacherAssociation, Pokhara University Teacher Association,Student Union and other universities. The ViceChancellor, Deans, four Campus Chiefs and three

university teachers nominated by Right HonorableChancellor are also the members of the Senate.Registrar is the member secretary of the Senate.Academic Council: It is the academic body of theuniversity and chaired by the Vice Chancellor. TheCouncil consists of the heads of the major academicbodies such as Registrar, Deans of different faculties,Chairmen of different subject committees,educationists, Chief of research center, Controller ofExaminations, Chief of Curriculum DevelopmentCenter; experts and teachers appointed by RightHonorable Chancellor on the recommendation ofVice Chancellor. The Council makes decision onpolicies and practices regarding curricula, teaching,examination, and academic programs of theuniversity.Executive Council: The Vice Chancellor chairs theExecutive Council. The Council executes the policydecisions taken by the University Senate. It iscomposed of seven members—Vice Chancellor, oneperson from amongst Deans, one person fromamongst the Campus Chiefs who are members of theSenate, three persons from amongst members of theSenate including one teacher, and Registrar. TheRegistrar is the ex-officio member secretary of theCouncilOthers: Faculty Boards, Subject Committees, andExamination Committee assist the university indesigning academic programs, conduct examinations,and monitor the academic decisions made by theuniversity. University Service Commissionrecommends manpower to be recruited as per therequirement of the university. Faculties run theprograms under the direct supervision of the Dean.Currently, the University Senate has given approvalto run academic programs under the Faculty ofManagement Studies, Faculty of Science andTechnology, Faculty of Humanities and SocialSciences.

Faculties and Academic ProgramsPokhara University has three faculties—Faculty ofScience and Technology, Faculty of ManagementStudies and Faculty of Humanities and SocialSciences, and is establishing the Faculty of HealthSciences in near future. The university has offeredBachelor and Master programs in various subjects inits 4 constituent schools and 46 affiliated colleges. Atpresent, it has run 18 Bachelor programs—Bachelorof Science in Bio-chemistry, Bachelor ofPharmaceutical Sciences, Bachelor of ComputerApplication, Bachelor of Civil Engineering orDiploma Holders, Bachelor of Science in MedicalLaboratory Technology, Bachelor of Science inMedical Bio-chemistry, Bachelor of Science inMedical Microbiology, Bachelor of Public Health,Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor ofComputer Engineering, Bachelor of Civil

Similarly, the university has offered 6 Bachelorprograms—Bachelor of Business Administration,Bachelor of Hotel Management, Bachelor ofComputer Information System, Bachelor ofComputer Application, Bachelor of Health CareManagement, Bachelor of Business Administration inBanking and Insurance, four Master programs—Master of Business Administration, Master of HealthCare Management, Master of BusinessAdministration (Executive), Master of ComputerInformation System, and one post graduate diplomaprograms—Postgraduate Diploma in Health CareManagement, under the Faculty of ManagementStudies and three Master programs—Master of Artsin English and Master in Population, Gender andDevelopment, and Master of Philosophy in English(M. Constituent SchoolsPokhara University has four schools: School ofHealth and Allied Sciences, School of Engineering,School of Development and Social Engineering andSchool of Business in its academic complex.School of Health and Allied Sciences has runBachelor in Pharmacy, Medical LaboratoryTechnology, Public Health and Nursing. It isplanning to launch new programs such as Master ofPharmacy, Master of Public Health, and Master ofMedical Laboratory Technology.

Niketan, Apex College,Universal Science College, National Open College,Institute of Advance, Communication, Education andResearch Center (IACER), Nobel College, NepalCollege of Information Technology, Cosmos Collegeof Management and Technology, EverestEngineering and Management College, ExcelInternational College, Atlantic International College,Liberty College, Camad College, Standard CharteredCollege, Citizen College, SIAM College, QuestInternational College, Platinum Management College,Ritz Hospitality Management College, CentralInstitute of Science and Technology(CIST) and SahidRamnath Dahal Smriti College are located inKathmandu Valley. Nepal Engineering College runs

the programs related only to engineering; UniversalCollege focuses only on science program; and AceInstitute of Management, Apex college and newlyaffiliated colleges concentrate their program onmanagement education. SchEMS has concentrated itsprograms in science of environment management andmanagement. It has offered three programs- Bachelorof Science in Environment Management, Master ofScience in Environment Management and Bachelorin Business Administration. IACER runs Master ofArts in English and Master of Philosophy in English(M. Phil) programs and other colleges run differentBachelor, Master and Post Graduate Diplomaprograms.

Academic ScheduleThe academic year of the University consists of twosemesters—Fall semester and Spring semester, of 16weeks each. Normally, Fall semester starts in Augustand Spring in February. New admission in Bachelorprograms is taken only in Fall semester and in Masterprogram admission is taken in both Fall semester andSpring semester.

Evaluation and Credit Transfer SystemPokhara University has two components ofperformance evaluation system: internal and external.The concerned teachers and colleges evaluate theperformance of their students continuously. Theweight of internal evaluation in Bachelor program is50 percent and in Master program it is 60 percent.

Office of the Controller of Examinations conducts thesemester end examination for external evaluation.University has downsizing system to check up theundeserving internal evaluation of the students. It hasfollowed the relative grading system on 4 point ratingscale. Pokhara University has established a system ofcredit transfer. Students of other universities cantransfer the credit to Pokhara University up to 25percent of the total credit hours and students ofPokhara University also can transfer the credit hoursto other universities.

FinancingPokhara University finances its recurrentexpenditures mainly from three sources: NepalGovernment's grants, revenue from students andaffiliation fee. Dependency on government coffer isdecreasing year by year and increasing its financialindependency in its operation and is in the path ofnational policy on higher education: cost sharing withprivate sector. But it fully depends on governmentgrants for financing the capital expenditure especiallyfor infrastructure development. Local community hasendowed land to the university and is committed toprovide the land for School of Engineering, School ofEducation and Sports, and Herbal Research Center.University has policy to mobilize the private sectorand donors to develop the university infrastructuresuch as hostel, school building and residentialfacilities, and credit the infrastructure by the name ofthe concerned donor.Scholarship ProgramPokhara University provides scholarship to 5 percentof approved quota of students in affiliated Collegesand 20 percent in constituent schools to make the

higher education imparted by it accessible to theunderprivileged section of the society. The applicantfor scholarship program should pass S.L.C. from thegovernment school and pass the ScholarshipSelection Examination conducted by the university.

Student Assistantship ProgramStudent assistantship programs such as part timeemployment in clerical works, library works,gardening, transportation, laboratory works andteaching in junior classes will be launched to providethe financial support to the financially weak students.The first priority will be given to the scholarshipstudents for student assistantship program.
