Introduction of Southern Medical University

Southern Medical University, located in Guangzhou, formerly the First Military Medical University, was founded in 1951. It was designated as a national key university in 1979. In 2004 it was renamed Southern Medical University. The University has been authorized by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China to enroll international students that enjoy Chinese Government Scholarship and undergraduate international students majored in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, programs delivered in English).

The University has 17 schools with an enrollment of 19,261 degree candidates, including 4,898 postgraduate candidates, 13,150 undergraduates and 1,037 international students. The University has 11 affiliated hospitals with more than 10,000 hospital beds in total. It has also established long-term cooperation in clinical teaching with more than 100 excellent hospitals and institutes around the world.

The subjects offered by the University cover 7 fields including: medicine, natural science, engineering, law, management, economics and liberal arts. The University grants Master’s degree in 100 subjects and Doctor’s degree in 76 subjects (including 10 first-class subjects) with 6 academic stations for postdoctoral research. Among the 2,030 full-time teachers of the University, 1,168 have senior professional titles. At present, working on its campus are a large group of well-known experts and professors, among whom there are 3 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 national outstanding teachers and 3 international class teachers.

In 2005, the University began to enroll undergraduate international students majored in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, programs delivered in English), and in 2006, it started to enroll international students who enjoy Chinese Government Scholarship. So far more than 1,800 international students from 85 countries have studied in the University. The University has also been delegated by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Commerce to train more than 2,532 foreign officials and technicians from 116 countries and regions working on medical education and health-care management.

The University regularly conducts cooperation such as exchange of teachers and students, joint training, international scientific research cooperation and the cooperation on running schools and hospitals with 51 universities or institutes in 19 countries or regions in Europe, America and Asia-pacific region.

Admission Guide for 2018 Undergraduate International Students of Southern Medical University (English Medium)

I. Admission Requirements

Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens, over the age of 18 and under 30, senior high school graduates or above, in good health and qualified for university application.

International students immigrated from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan shall obtain foreign nationality for over 4 years and the record of over two-year foreign physical presence in the past 4 years.

Language proficiency (applicants from non-English-speaking countries): TOEFL 68 or above; IELTS 6.0 or above; or other comparable certificates.

II. Majors

1. MBBS

Southern Medical University is one of the first 30 universities qualified to admit clinical medical undergraduate international students (English medium). Since the enrollment in September 2005, students from over 30 countries including India, Pakistan, Mauritius, Thailand, the United Kingdom and Korea have been admitted in the past 11 years.

Clinical Medical College takes the cultivation of five-year clinical medical undergraduates as the basic requirement, referring to the Temporary Provisions of Quality Control Specification of Medical Undergraduate Education for International Students in China (English Medium) and international standards of medical education, gives due consideration to the medical needs of international students’ source countries and the international needs of returning to home country or serving in a third country, aims at training international medical talents with solid basic knowledge, standard clinical skills and good professional ethics, and devotes to providing medical, teaching and research personnel to medical and health services department.

The duration of studies is six years including one year of internship in the hospital. International students who successfully complete the requirements of teaching plan and pass all examinations will be reviewed and granted graduation. Students in accordance with the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in English.

2. Acupuncture and Massage Therapy

Southern medical university started to enroll students in Traditional Chinese Medicine in Acupuncture and Massage Therapy in 2008. It aims to cultivate talents with clinical skills such as acupuncture and moxibustion, massage, rehabilitation, physical therapy and health care. The main courses include Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Pathophysiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Preventive Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Diagnosis, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, etc.

The duration of studies is five years including one year of internship in the hospital. International students who successfully complete the requirements of teaching plan and pass all examinations will be reviewed and granted graduation. Students in accordance with the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Medicine in Acupuncture and Massage Therapy in English.

3. Nursing

Southern Medical University started to enroll students in Nursing in 2004, aiming to cultivate talents with clinical skills engaged in nursing and preventive health care at various types of medical and health care institutions. The main courses include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Basic Nursing, Health Assessment, Medical Nursing, Surgical Nursing, Nursing of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Nursing Ethics, Nursing Psychology, etc.

The duration of studies is four years including one year of internship in the hospital. International students who successfully complete the requirements of teaching plan and pass all examinations will be reviewed and granted graduation. Students in accordance with the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing in English.

4. Clinical Pharmacy

Southern Medical University started to enroll students in Clinical Pharmacy in 2002, aimed at training professionals with solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Medicine, pharmacy, clinical pharmacy and biology that can be engaged in a variety of clinical pharmacy service, hospital pharmacy management, clinical pharmacy research, drug pharmacy management and drug marketing, etc. The main courses include Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Cell Biology, Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Biological Preparation And Pharmacokinetics, Clinical Diagnosis, Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics And Gynecology, Infectious Diseases Science, Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Therapeutics, Pharmacy Administration, etc.

5. Public Affairs Management (Hospital Management)

Southern Medical University started to enroll students in Public Affairs Management (Hospital Management) in 2004, aimed at training professionals with solid foundation, wide knowledge and strong professional skills, who master basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Medicine and modern management theory and methods that can be adapted to the needs of health reform and development. The main courses include Basis Of Management, Human Resources Management, Public Management, Leadership Science, Health Management, Health Economics, Health Statistics, Management, Economics, Hospital Management, Organizational Behavior, Health Law, Overview Of Introduction to Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Epidemiology, Hygiene, etc.

The duration of studies is four years including 14 weeks of internship. International students who successfully complete the requirements of teaching plan and pass all examinations will be reviewed and granted graduation. Students in accordance with the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Management in English.

IV. Application Instructions

First download and fill in Admission Application form, then pay registration fee after the confirmation of successful registration, and then submit application materials. Application materials could be submitted in person or other entrusted person, or mailed to Student Affair Office of School of International Education. All mail applications shall arrive by July 30, 2018; otherwise such applications shall be discarded.

V. Application Materials

2. Photocopy of valid passport;

3. Photocopy of Highest Academic Degree Certificate, Expected Graduation Certificate for fresh graduates (in English);

4. Photocopies of transcript of all courses during the highest academic degree education (in English);

5. 2 ID photos (same size as passport photo, paste one on the application form);

6. Photocopy of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (filled in English, http://studysmu.com.gh235.cnidcn.com/index.php?m=&c=index&a=lists&catid=27);

7. Certificate of Language proficiency: for applicants from non-English-speaking countries; If the highest degree was gained in English-speaking countries, and the courses were delivered in English, the certificate of English medium shall be provided;

8. Photocopies of the certificates of award, certificates of merit and the foreign Admission Notice on college level or above;

9. Payment receipt of registration fee;

10. Two original copies of Authorization to the Guardian (notarized) with signature (for applicants under the age of 18 by September 1, 2018. If not notarized in China, the endorsement of the Chinese Embassy is required. The form could be downloaded from the website of School of International Education: http://studysmu.com.gh235.cnidcn.com/index.php?m=&c=index&a=lists&catid=27).

★ Guardians shall be Chinese or foreign adults who reside in China with stable source of income.

★ Graduation Certificate and transcript should be Notarized.

★ The University will request for the submission of supplementary materials when necessary.

★Application materials mentioned above will not be returned to applicants whether they are admitted or not.

VI. Review and Admission

The transcripts and nonacademic behaviors of the applicants shall be reviewed, and those who are outstanding shall be admitted.

★ The result of admission will be published on the website of School of International Education in August of 2018, the Admission Notice and Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/JW202) will be sent afterwards.

★ After receiving the Admission Notice and Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/JW202), one shall apply for Study Visa in China to the Chinese Embassy (consulate-general) and other visa agencies abroad holding the materials above, the original copy and photocopy of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner, and the valid ordinary passport.

VII. Admission Date

September 2018. The specific time shall be subject to the date marked on the Admission Notice.

★Students admitted shall register at School of International Education with the original copies of the Admission Notice, Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/JW202), passport, certificate of physical examination and other relevant materials in accordance with the prescribed time on the Admission Notice. Students who could not register on time due to certain reasons shall obtain prior consent of the University. Those who fail to register in the validity time without approval will be regarded as waiver of registration.

VIII. Charging Standard

1. Registration fee: 800 RMB/person, registration fee will not be returned;

2. Tuition: 40000 RMB/year;

3. Accommodation: double room 6000 RMB/person/year;

4. Other fees: fees including teaching materials, board expenses, medical expenses, utility bills, drinking water charges, internet charges, medical insurance expenses, etc. shall be paid accordingly by the international students.

IX. Other Scholarships:

Self-funded international students can apply for Guangdong Government Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen or Southern Medical University Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen with the award standard as 30,000 RMB for each doctoral candidate, 20,000 RMB for each postgraduate student and 10,000 RMB for each undergraduate student. Students can also apply for other scholarships, such as Chinese Government Scholarship for the Distinguished International Students, Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship and Southern Medical University Scholarship for Outstanding International Students. Admission Guide for 2018 Postgraduate International Students(Visiting Scholars) of Southern Medical University


1. Master Degree Candidate: under the age of 35, a degree comparable to the Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese universities, non-Chinese citizen with a foreign passport.

2. Doctoral Candidate: under the age of 40, a degree comparable to the Master’s Degree in Chinese universities, non-Chinese citizen with a foreign passport.

3. General Visiting Student: under the age of 45, a degree comparable to the Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese universities, non-Chinese citizen with a foreign passport.

4. Senior Visiting Scholar: under the age of 50, a degree comparable to the Master’s Degree in Chinese universities, non-Chinese citizen with a foreign passport.

★International students immigrated from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan shall obtain foreign nationality for over 4 years and the record of over two-year foreign physical presence in the past 4 years.

5. Language Requirements:

Chinese Medium Program: photocopy of HSK certificate (within the validity time of 2 years) or other comparable certificates proving Chinese proficiency (a score of 180 or above of the new HSK Level 5). If the highest degree was gained in Chinese universities with Chinese medium, the certificate of Chinese medium shall be provided;

English Medium Program: applicants from non-English-speaking countries shall provide TOEFL or IELTS certificate (TOEFL 90 or above, IELTS 6.5 or above). If the highest degree was gained in English-speaking countries, the certificate of English medium shall be provided.

Study plan in China. 1000 words for master degree applicants (general visiting students) and 1500 words for doctoral degree applicants (senior visiting scholars) written in Chinese (Chinese medium applicants) or English (English medium applicants). The content includes personal studying and working experiences, academic research achievement, research and learning programs during master or doctoral study, personal developing goals after graduation, etc.;

6. Two original copies of recommendation letters written by professors or associate professors in Chinese or English (with signatures and contact information);

Southern Medical University

I. Introduction

This programme is sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China, in response to the “Belt and Road” strategy which aims to deepen the educational cooperation with the countries along the “Belt and Road”, and to promote the unity of the people, also to cultivate leading talents and skilled talents in these relevant countries.

As one of the first universities to join this programme, Southern Medical University is approved to recruit PhD candidates in the field of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Students from the “Belt and Road” countries are warmly welcome to apply and study in Southern Medical University.

II. Eligibility

1. Applicants must come from countries along the “Belt and Road” and be in good health.

2. Applicants must have a master’s degree and be under the age of 40.

3. Applicants should respect Chinese Culture and abide by all Laws and regulations as applicable to International Students studying in China. Applicants should be in a proper physical and mental health condition and should be honest. He/ She should not have any Criminal Record in any country.

4. Applicants should have excellent academic credentials and be fully commit themselves to the program and should be fully motivated to study in Guangdong. The GPA should be above 3.0 for the previous phase of study, without failure or retake in any courses.

5. Language proficiency:

Chinese Medium Program: photocopy of HSK certificate (within the validity time of 2 years) or other comparable certificates proving Chinese proficiency (a score of 180 or above of the new HSK Level 5). If the highest degree was gained in Chinese universities with Chinese medium, the certificate of Chinese medium shall be provided;

English Medium Program: applicants from non-English-speaking countries shall provide TOEFL or IELTS certificate (TOEFL 90 or above, IELTS 6.5 or above). If the highest degree was gained in English-speaking countries, the certificate of English medium shall be provided.

VIII. Selection and notification

Scholarship decisions will be made on the basis of the applicants’ application documents, academic performance, overall merits, research achievements and supervisors’ comments.

I. Introduction

This programme is sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China, in response to President Barack Obama’s proposal of sending 100,000 American students to study in China.

As one of the universities under Sino-US Cultural Scholarship, American students are warmly welcome to apply and study in Southern Medical University.

II. Eligibility

1. Applicants must be American citizens in good health.

2. Applicants should meet the following eligibility requirements:

Not be a registered student in Chinese universities at the time of application;

Or be a graduate from Chinese universities for more than one year.

3. Education background and age limit:

Applicants for bachelor’s degree studies must have a high school diploma and be under the age of 25;

Applicants for master's degree studies must have a bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35;

Applicants for doctoral degree studies must have a master’s degree and be under the age of 40.


5. Applicants should have excellent academic credentials and be fully commit themselves to the program and should be fully motivated to study in Guangdong. The GPA of Master’s degree or doctoral degree candidates should be above 3.0 for the previous phase of study, without failure or retake in any courses. Bachelor’s degree candidates should score over 75 for all courses with no failure.

To attract and encourage more students to study in Southern Medical University and to give awards to excellent international students, we set up the freshman scholarship for international students.

Ⅰ. Category of Awards

Admission Guide for 2018 Foundation ProgramOf Southern Medical University

In order to help students who apply Southern Medical University (SMU) to adapt to Chinese education system and teaching requirements, and also make some preparations for the bachelor degree study, we open foundation program in 2018 spring semester. Through one semester or one year’s foundation study, international students can meet the entry requirements of SMU not only in Chinese and cross-cultural communication, but also related professional knowledge.




Applicants from non-English-speaking countries shall provide TOEFL or IELTS certificate (TOEFL 68 or above, IELTS 6 or above). If the highest degree was gained in English-speaking countries, the certificate of English medium shall be provided.

II. Course Setting

To enhance students’ knowledge, the courses will focus on language teaching and take professional knowledge learning as an essential supplement. For language learning, it consists of Medical Chinese and common Chinese, which is going to be taught in accordance with the admission test results. While for the professional knowledge learning, mathematics, chemistry and biology are included.
