International Foxtrot FT - Intro - 1 Introduction for International Foxtrot General Foxtrot is a beautiful and difficult Smooth Ballroom Rhythm. There are several types of Foxtrot. Two of these are the Social Foxtrot (also called American Foxtrot and Rhythm Dancing) and the Slow Foxtrot (International Foxtrot). Social Foxtrot closely resembles slow quickstep. This is the type taught most often to beginning students in many major dance studios. On a crowded dance floor, the Social Foxtrot is quite suitable. The character of Slow Foxtrot is long, smooth, gliding steps. The dancer needs much control to give the dance a lazy and unhurried appearance. It is easier to dance these long and gliding steps on a large, uncrowded floor. The smooth rise and fall should happen as a normal result of the movement of the dance. They call this natural movement body flight. Timing The timing for Slow Foxtrot is 4/4 (four beats to each measure or bar) and normally with three steps taken over the four beats of music. The tempo is usually 30 measures per minute. Generally the accent is on beat one and three, with beat one being the stronger. Rhythm The basic rhythm of foxtrot is SLOW, QUICK, QUICK. For definition, a SLOW (S) is equal to two beats of music and a QUICK (Q) is equal to one. Interpretation of the music is largely a matter of personal taste, but a good general hint is to be a little late with the second QUICK. Body Mechanics The use of correct body mechanics makes the Slow Foxtrot much easier to dance. We have listed a few key points. The dancer must keep the body weight well over the supporting leg. If the partners' feet are slightly apart this is easier to accomplish. A good top line (head to rib cage region) is a necessity, with the weight of the head maintained over the feet. Keep the knees relaxed - never locked. Hold the arms up with the muscles of the back of the upper arm (triceps) instead of the front muscles (biceps), while keeping the shoulders down. Movement Foxtrot movement generally involves long, gliding steps. The second step may be shorter due to the rising action and the third longer to give the dance a smooth, flowing appearance. Forward Movement Forward movement begins by lowering into the knee of the supporting foot. To describe this, let's assume that we are standing on the right foot. We swing the free foot (left) forward from the hip, after lowering to the heel on the previous step. The heel of the supporting foot (right) releases as the heel of the free foot (left) is about to strike the floor. There is a push off the right toe before the left heel contacts the floor. As weight transfers onto the new supporting foot (left), the other (right) gathers under the body. Step one generally ends with a slight rise. Most turning movements begin with CBM. Usually step one is a SLOW.

    Introduction for International Foxtrot

General Foxtrot is a beautiful and difficult Smooth Ballroom Rhythm.

Forward Movement

Forward movement begins by lowering into the knee of the supporting foot.

    Introduction (continued)

    FT - Intro - 2

The second and third steps, most often, are on the toe or ball of the foot. Step two generally remains up, lowering at the end of step three. Step three may be taken in Contrary Body Movement Position (CBMP). For example, every step taken outside partner, in banjo, is in CBMP. Occasionally CBM accompanies CBMP. Generally step two and three are QUICKS.

    Backward Movement

The knee of the supporting foot (left, for purposes of explanation) bends, lowering into the supporting leg. The free foot (right), leg and hip move back with the toe leading. As the weight transfers to the free foot, the heel of the supporting foot drags back until it collects under the body with no foot rise.

Rise and Fall "Rise" is the increased elevation created by the bracing of the muscles of the legs, the straightening of the knees and the stretching upwards of the body. The rising of the heel or heels from the floor usually accompanies this action. "Fall" is the lowering of the supporting foot from the toe to heel and the subsequent flexing of the knees while preparing for the next step. Instructions referring to no foot rise (NFR), mean that there is a body rise while the heel of the supporting foot does not leave the floor. No foot rise generally occurs on backing steps, for the lady, when the man has normal rise. The man's forward poise and swing, in all forward movements, (e.g., Feather, Three Step) will result in the lady having a body rise, with no foot rise. The man will have no foot rise on all heel pulls. The lady will have no foot rise during a heel turn until she begins her forward step. The rise and fall in Foxtrot is generally achieved by rising at the end of step one, maintaining the rise on step two and three, and lowering at the end of step three.

Heel Turn The term heel turn is almost a misnomer. The turn happens on the ball or whole foot of the supporting foot, keeping the moving or closing foot parallel to it. Trying to accomplish a heel turn on the heel of the foot will cause the toes to come off the floor. This will not allow for any body rise or natural forward progression at the end of the turning action. Transfer the weight to the closing foot at the end of the turn. The lady does a heel turn on the second step of natural and reverse turning figures. The Pull Step is a type of heel turn, used by the man, in some backward Natural Turns (e.g., fifth step of the Natural Turn for the man). The feet may be kept apart instead of closed, and the weight is more forward than in a heel turn. The second step of an Impetus Turn is a heel turn for the man that is almost like the lady's heel turn.

Brush A brush occurs when the moving foot (generally for the woman) moves from one open position to another. The word "Brush" means that the moving foot must first close to the foot supporting the weight of the body, but without the weight changing. During the Brush step it is advisable to keep the knees relaxed and brush with the moving foot's toe about level with the supporting foot's instep. It is not necessary for the toes of both feet to touch when brushing.

Shoulder Leading The Shoulder Lead occurs when the same foot and shoulder move forward or backward simultaneously, i.e., the right shoulder and the right foot move forward on the same step.

    Introduction (continued)

    FT - Intro - 3

Contra (Contrary) Body Movement Contra (contrary) Body Movement (CBM) is the action of turning the opposite hip and shoulder toward the direction of the moving leg. If the left leg moves forward the right side of the body would move forward. Most turning movements begin with CBM. When stepping forward using CBM, the leg must move on a straight line. If the foot and leg turn with the body, you will be moving into the space of the partner moving backward. While backing, using CBM, a slight turn of the foot and leg is allowed as you are vacating the partner's space.

Contra (Contrary) Body Movement Position Contra (contrary) Body Movement Position (CBMP) is the position attained by placing the moving foot in the same track as the supporting foot. Steps taken in Banjo (BJO) position or Sidecar (SDCAR) position should end in CBMP. Sometimes it will be necessary to use CBM to end a step in CBMP. If the previous step does not have a shoulder leading you will have to use CBM. If there was a shoulder leading, the body is in position for a step in CBMP.

Sway Using sway is not only for effect but to improve the balance and the execution of many figures. Initiate the action of the sway at the ankles and progresses upward through the hips, then through the diaphragm, but not the shoulders. In the slow foxtrot, it is best to keep sway to a minimum. There are three types of Sway: Normal Sway

Normal Sway is the natural (normal) inclination of the body from the ankles, upward AWAY FROM the moving leg. You use this Sway on nearly all figures that curve, wave or turn. The exception is spins, such as, Pivots, Double Reverse Spin, Outside Spin, and Lock Steps.

    Hover Sway

The Hover Sway is the natural inclination of the body from the ankles up toward the moving leg. Use this sway to hover to semi-closed position.

    Metromome Sway (Broken Sway)

Metronome Sway is a top of the body sway that is from the waist upwards. We use it in the Change of Direction, Hesitation Change, and the Tipsy for example.

Produce a Left Sway with a side step taken on the right foot and the body inclines upward from the ankle (stretch the right side). Left Sway is generally diagonal forward and level as in the Hover Cross for the man and the Feather for the woman. Achieve Right Sway by taking a side step on the left foot and allow the left side to inclined upward from the ankle. Right Sway is generally diagonally back as in the Natural Turn and the Feather for the man. It is important that when stretching one side of the body do not collapse the opposite side.

    NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in banjo backing diagonal to line of dance and the center of the hall. [Step 1.] Step back toward DLC and in banjo with the left foot, toe-heel. Begin a rise through the body with no foot rise. [Step 2.] Step back on the right foot on the toe continuing to rise. Turn right face to right shoulder leading. The feeling is that you are still in banjo. [Step 3.] Step back on the left toe in banjo, toward LOD. Lower to the heel as the right foot collects under the body ready to take the next step.

    FT - Fig 6 - 16

LADY Start in banjo moving diagonal to line of dance and the center of the hall. [Step 1.] Step forward in banjo, outside partner, with the right foot, heel-toe. Rise as the weight moves from the heel to the toe. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left toe, turning slightly right face to a left shoulder leading. [Step 3.] Step forward on the right toe in banjo, outside partner. As the left foot collects under the body, preparing for the next step, lower to the heel.

    GENERAL NOTES

It is common for the back feather to follow a curved feather and then dance a feather finish. Omitting the curving action on step two is acceptable. In that case, take step three toward DLC.

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1] Step forward on the left foot, Heel-toe. Using CBM start a left face turn. There is no rise on this step. [Step 2] With a right shoulder leading, step forward on the right foot using the inside edge of the toe. The left face turn should continue to end facing DLC. A slight rise on the end of the step will cause the left foot to brush toward the right on the inside edge of the toe.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal to reverse line of dance and the center of the hall. [Step 1] Step back on the right foot, toe-heel. Using CBM start a left face turn. There is no rise on this step. [Step 2] With a left shoulder leading, step back on the left foot using the inside edge of the toe. The left face turn should continue to end facing DRW. A slight rise on the end of the step will cause the right foot to brush toward the right on the inside edge of the toe.

GENERAL NOTES It is important that both steps of this figure be taken on the same line. Do the turn and brush, that occur on the second step, during the latter part of the step. Up to one-half turn to the left is acceptable. One-quarter turn to the left is the normal amount of turn used in round dancing. The second step may also use two "slows". This would give the figure three "slows".

    NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Step back on the right toe, checking in CBMP. [Step 2.] Lowering slightly and using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward on the left foot, heel-toe. [Step 3.] Continue the left face turn to step side on the right toe, with a right shoulder leading. The step is toward COH and preparing for the next step to be in banjo. [Step 4.] Step back on the left toe in CBMP and banjo. [Step 5.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back on the right toe, into closed position. [Step 6.] Continuing the left face turn, step side and forward toward DLW on the left toe. The body does not turn as much as the foot. The left shoulder is leading and you are preparing to step outside partner in banjo. [Step 7.] Step forward on the right toe in CBMP and Banjo, outside partner. Collecting the left leg under the body, lower to the heel to prepare for the next step.

LADY Start in closed position DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM, if necessary, step forward on the left toe, checking in CBMP. [Step 2.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back on the right foot toe-heel. [Step 3.] With a left shoulder leading, step side on the left toe, preparing to step outside partner in banjo. [Step 4.] Step forward on the right toe, in CBMP and banjo, outside partner. [Step 5.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step forward on the left toe, into closed position. [Step 6.] Continuing the left face turn, start the right leg forward. The turning action will cause the right foot to end side on the toe, toward DLW. [Step 7.] Continue turning left face on the right foot to a right shoulder leading and step back on the left toe in CBMP and banjo. Collecting the right leg under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

    GENERAL NOTES

An acceptable entry to this figure is any back step on the left foot. A typical entry is the first three steps of a reverse wave. Following a quick open reverse is also an acceptable entry. The man must not allow himself to get "buried" on the check step. The checking action is up not down. If he checks to low or deep, his momentum will be going backward at the end of the check. He wants to feel that he is going forward at the end of the check as that is the direction of the next step.

    NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed position facing DLC. [Step 1.] Start left face turn forward on heel to ball of left to face COH using a light left sway. [Step 2.] Continue left face turn side and forward on ball of right foot outside partner turning a little over 1/8 left face allowing body to continue the turn to face nearly RLOD using body and foot rise with extension upward and outward. Although, due to the rise on the right foot, there has also been rise on the left, the left foot should otherwise remain in place. [Step 3.] Start lowering to left foot with 1/8 right face swivel, then continue swivel with ball/flat action to end facing DLW with right heel in contact with floor in strong CBMP, right foot between the lady’s feet.

  • Checked Reverse Turn and Slip Pivot (continued) International Foxtrot

    FT - Fig 37 - 78 S#5 2001

LADY Start in closed position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Press right toe well back preparing for a left face heel turn with no foot or body rise. [Step 2.] Pull left heel toward right foot. As the left foot nearly closes to right foot, pivot left face on the right heel, then change weight to left foot to end facing nearly LOD. Continue turn through the body with slight body rise, extend head upward and to the left. [Step 3.] Start strong rotation right face to start pivoting action forward between man’s feet on ball of right while holding left toe in strong CBMP back slightly to side with some floor contact.

GENERAL NOTES On steps 1 and 2 some left shaping is used by the man while the lady has none. On step 2 some weight is retained on the man’s left and lady’s right foot to allow for the amount of torque to follow. Both continue the left face body turn with strong upward and outward extension. The man needs to draw his right heel back a little on step 3 in order to hold it in CBMP between the lady’s feet for the next figure. There should be a clockwise sweeping action to accompany step 3 with some CBM at the end to prepare for a right face turning figure. Some choreography calls for a timing of SQS on this figure. This is more often used when the ending position is DLW.

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position facing Reverse Line Of Dance. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face heel turn, step back on the left foot, toe-heel. There is no rise or sway on this step. [Step 2.] Pull the right foot, on the heel, to the left while turning right face on the left foot. Completing the turn, change weight to the right foot and rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Remaining in CP, step back and slightly to the side on the left toe, toward DRC. As the right foot collects under the body, lower to the heel of the left to begin the next figure.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing Line Of Dance. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward on the right foot, heel-toe. This is a down step with no rise. [Step 2.] Continuing the right face turn, start the left foot forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side on the toe. When transferring the weight, start to rise. This will cause the right foot to brush to the left as the turn continues. [Step 3.] Step forward and slightly side on the right toe. As the left foot collects under the body, lower to the heel of the right foot to begin the next figure.

    GENERAL NOTES

The lady's forward swing on step 2 will helps the man's rotation, allowing an easy completion of the turn. As with most turning figures, slight amount of sway is welcome.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal wall and reverse line of dance moving toward diagonal center and line of dance. [Step 1.] Lower into knee of standing leg and step backward with right foot toward diagonal center and line of dance. Rotate upper body slightly to yield left side lead. Transfer only partial weight to stepping foot. Turn head strongly to left. [Step 2.] Recover onto left foot rising at end of step and rotate upper body slightly into normal Closed Position. [Step 3.] Step forward right with slip pivoting action rotate right face to Closed Position facing diagonal center and reverse line of dance.

GENERAL NOTES The Contra Check can be used in a number of amalgamations. It may used as an extended picture figure, often at the end of a routine. Also, the third step may be changed which could be a side step, a Slip Pivot (this figure) or a Switch. The Contra Check itself can create a beautiful picture if only partial weight is transferred and if the arms are allowed to breathe so the woman can extend the line as far as she is capable. Take care to avoid rising while in the Contra Check.

[Step 3.] Finishing the left face turn, step back on the right foot with a toe to heel action and lower at the end of this step. End in Closed Position facing DLW.

  • Curving Three Step (continued) International Foxtrot

    FT - Fig - 33 - 70

    GENERAL NOTES

The Lady may turn her head to the right on step 3, instead of leaving it to the left throughout the figure. If the Lady does opt to turn her head to the right, she must be careful not to pull her right side away from the man's or move into his space. The last step of the Curving Three Step is almost always a checking step, thus the following figure begins with a step backward, toward DLW. This figure may start facing any direction but usually begins facing DW, LOD or DLC.

[Step 1.] Step backward with left foot toward diagonal wall and line of dance and commence right face turn.. Rise in the body at end of the step in the body (no foot rise). [Step 2.] Close right foot to left [without weight] and execute a heel turn on the left foot turning right face. Rise to balls of feet at the end of the step. [Step 3.] Continue turning right face and step forward and side on ball of left foot. [Step 4.] Step forward on ball of right foot in Contra Banjo Position facing nearly diagonal wall and reverse line of dance. Lower to heel at end of step.

    GENERAL NOTES

Lady should take care not to hop on the third step, and should have her weight well over her foot on the fourth step. The following figure is a forward step for the man (backward for the lady). This figure is essentially the mirror image of the Double Reverse Spin, and while often used in Waltz, it has clear Foxtrot roots due to the lady’s heel turn on step 2. As with the Double Reverse Spin, the amount of turn depends on the choreography, but normally ranges between 3/4 turn and a full turn.

    Turn to SCP

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION MAN Start in closed position facing DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward toward DLC on the left heel in CBM, rising to the toe to lead the lady to dance a heel turn. [Step 2.] Swaying slightly to the left, step side, toward DLC on the right toe. [Step 3.] Continuing the left face turn, step side and slightly forward across LOD turning the lady to SCP and lowering to the left heel. [Step 4.] Step forward in CBMP toward LOD on the right heel. Rise to the toe and turn the lady to closed position. [Step 5.] Step forward using CBM toward LOD on the ball of the left foot. [Step 6.] Accelerating the rate of turn, step side LOD on ball of right foot. [Step 7.] Continuing the acceleration, turn the lady to SCP and step side and forward toward DLW on the left toe lowering to the heel.

LADY Start in closed position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Step back on the right toe toward DLC in CBM and lower to the heel. [Step 2.] Continuing the left face turn, draw the left foot to the right, dancing a heel turn. Transferring your weight to the left foot, begin to rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Rising on the left toe and turning the head right in SCP step side and forward toward LOD on the right toe lowering to the heel. [Step 4.] Step forward toward LOD on the left heel in SCP. Rising to the toe, turn left face to CP with the head left. [Step 5.] Turning left face, step back toward LOD on the ball of the right foot. [Step 6.] Close the left foot to the right, dancing a left face toe spin. [Step 7.] Turning the head right step side and forward in SCP toward DLW lowering to the heel.

GENERAL NOTES Timing for the Double Open Telemark may vary, for example: SQQ &QQS, SQQ SQ&Q. Notice that the lady will generally dance a toe spin in place of a heel turn in the second Telemark. The first Telemark should be slightly overturned to ease entry into the second. This can be accomplished by the man dancing slightly toward center on step 3 instead of straight down line and by turning his body a little toward line on step 4. This figure is easier and more exciting to dance if the man delays taking step 4 until the woman has started the step. He can then accelerate to catch up.

    NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing diagonally center and line of dance. If started from feathered position, the starting position would be in Banjo. [Step 1.] Turning slightly left on the right step forward, on the left heel rising to the toe while continuing the left face turn. [Step 2.] Continuing the left face turn, step side diagonally toward DLC, on the right toe continuing the spin without sway. [Step 3.] Continuing the spin on the right toe draw the left toe on the floor closing it to the right without weight. Completing the spin, you end in Closed Position facing diagonally toward the wall and line of dance. When the lady has

  • Double Reverse Spin (continued) International Foxtrot

completed her crossing, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing diagonally toward the wall and reverse line of dance. If starting from feathered position, the starting position would be in Banjo. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back right toe to heel DLC. Rise through the body and allow the left foot to start pulling to the right on the heel. [Step 2.] Continue the turn as the left draws back closing to the right. When the turn is complete, change weight to the left, rising to the toe. [Step 3.] Continuing the left face turn, step side on the right toe toward the line of dance. The leg starts forward and the turn causes the foot to end side on the toe. [Step 4.] Continuing the turn by swiveling left face on the right foot. Cross the left foot in front of the right on the toe, lowering to the heel.

    GENERAL NOTES

The starting position of the figure will vary as will the amount of turn, depending upon the sequence of figures preceding and following the Double Reverse. The timing also may vary as the lady may spend more time on the heel turn, causing the syncopation to occur on the last two steps. It is important that the lady create and maintain her own rotation consistently throughout the figure.

[Step 2.] Step back on right foot well under the body moving to reverse line of dance and rising at the end of the step. [Step 3.] Turn left face and step forward toward reverse line of dance into Closed Dance Position. Continue left face rotation to end facing diagonal reverse line of dance and wall. Lower at end the step.

    GENERAL NOTES

It is important to maintain an upright position during the Ronde part of this figure. A common entry is Oversway, but nearly any figure leading to Fallaway position can work. Keep hips toward partner during the Ronde. The Ronde feet are usually on or near the floor. The characteristics of this figure are similar to the Rudolph Ronde Slip.
