Introduction DBQ
Directions: The task below is based on documents 1 through 5. This task is designed to test your ability to work with historical documents. Look at each document and answer the question or questions after each document. Use your answers to the questions to help you write your essay.
Historical Background:Documents can tell you a lot about a person that you may never meet. Personal documents about a person-whether it is an official government or religious document, photographs, letters, or their own work-can describe a person’s personality traits, emotions, or beliefs to you. Examining primary source documents, which are someone else’s personal documents, is not only a central part of social studies, and the way your teacher teaches social studies; it is also an important skill for your life!
Task:For Part A, read each document carefully and answer the question or questions after each document. Then read the directions for Part B and write your essay.
For Part B, use the information from the documents, your answers to the questions in Part A, and your knowledge of social studies to write a well organized essay. In your essay you will have to answer the following question:
Who is Mr. Hendrick?(In other words:
How would you describe Mr. Hendrick to someone who did not know him?)
________________________________________________________________________Part A: Read each document carefully and answer the question or questions after each document. Pay attention to the main ideas and information from each document. These will be used to help you write your essay!

Dr. Alan Singer, Ph.D.
May 27, 2012
This is a letter of recommendation for William Hendrick for the PhD program at
the CUNY Graduate center. I have known Bill for over ten years. He is currently a social
studies teacher and coordinator at Halsey JHS 157 in Queens. I have known Bill since he
was an undergraduate when I supervised his student teaching. As a graduate student he
presented on a panel about his teaching experience at an international conference in
Grenada, Spain and wrote two articles published in Social Science Docket, one on the
impact of the Panama and Suez canals and a document-based essay question on Jewish
immigrants in New York. As a teacher, Bill has involved his JHS students as participants
and presenters at the annual Hofstra Middle School Museum. One year they created
displays on their own experiences as immigrants. He also has students participate in the
annual NY and Slavery Walking Tour. This passed year I have worked with Bill on a
Teaching American history grant developing unit packages on immigrants in New York
City that compared different waves of immigration. William Hendrick is a wonderful
teacher and school leader. He also has tremendous potential as a historian and educational
researcher. He has my highest recommendation.
