INTRODUCTION: Assessing Spiritual Growth—Youth
Do you remember as a child tracking your physical development by standing next to a doorpost in your home and marking your height? You wanted to gauge your upward progress. Do you remember the thrill of making a new growth mark to record your increased stature?
Growth is not relegated simply to the physical realm. As Christians we have a spiritual dimension to consider. God designed the spiritual life of the believer for growth. He intends for every believer to be built up in Christ and in the faith. From the moment of salvation to the day of complete maturity when the believer meets Christ in Heaven, a process of spiritual development should take place.
As a church leader, you must ask yourself, “Are individuals in my church growing spiritually? Can I see defi nite progress in our church family s̓ spiritual formation?” The answers to these questions are important to designing effective ministry.
As you once measured physical growth, you can also track spiritual growth. The Bible affi rms the value of assessing spiritual development. The apostle Paul encouraged believers, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Prove yourselves. Do you not know yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualifi ed” (2 Cor. 13:5).
Tracking spiritual growthAssessing spiritual development enables the believer to identify roadblocks in the growth process and to take corrective action. The writer of Hebrews assessed the spiritual development of a group of Christians, noting that their growth rate was not what it should have been for the length of time they had been believers. He wanted the believers to more aggressively move toward spiritual maturity. “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the fi rst principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and notsolid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use
have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Heb. 5:12–14).
Spiritual birth and growth are the major focus of church ministry. You and your church are partners with God in the process of spiritual formation. Paul gave himself wholeheartedly to the challenging task of the spiritual development of believers. He passionately described his ministry objective in Colossians 1:28 and 29: “Him [Christ] we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.”
Setting the standardAny assessment requires a measurement standard. Paul assessed believers by the only trustworthy standard of spiritual development—by standing them next to Jesus Christ. He described this assessment process in Ephesians 4:11–13: “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”
Assessing progressBuildUP assessments are designed to assist you and your people in measuring church membersʼprogress toward spiritual maturity. By engaging in the assessment process, you will be able to chart a believer s̓ progress in attaining spiritual maturity and to obtain a group profi le for your congregation or class by combining individual assessments. Another BuildUP tool provides the opportunity for you to evaluate your church s̓ educational ministry. After determining specifi c areas in which growth is needed, you will be able to design a unique and intentional plan to effectively move people toward spiritual maturity. No greater force for God exists than a church growing toward spiritual maturity. Jesus said, “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18).

BuildUP Spiritual Maturity Assessments enable you to evaluate seven categories of spiritual development in the life of believers. The seven categories are
• Believing the Gospel• Understanding Biblical Ethics• Internalizing Godliness• Learning Doctrine• Developing Life Skills• Uplifting Others• Preparing to Serve
Together these seven categories comprise a profi le of spiritual maturity. By conducting an assessment review of an individual, you will be able to identify the strengths and challenges in a believerʼs spiritual formation. By combining the data from the assessments of individuals, youcan obtain a composite profi le of the group. This information enables a leader to more effectively design educational strategies for spiritual growth.
The assessments will also help you gauge how well you know the individuals you are teaching. The greater awareness you have of the spiritual progress of each person in your group, the more effective you will be as a builder of lives. Three spiritual maturity evaluations are available—BuildUP Spiritual Maturity Assessment for Children, for Youth, and for Adults.
Doing the assessmentSelect the appropriate assessment—children, youth, or adults—for the individual you are assessing. Each assessment has eleven descriptions for each of the seven categories of spiritual maturity. At the right of each page is a ranking scale of 1 to 5. Number 1 is the low end of the ranking, with number 5 as the high end. Number 1 characterizes a person who is just starting in the area of this description. Number 3 characterizes a person who is making defi nite progress but needs to develop to a greater extent. Number 5 represents an individual who consistently evidences development in this area. Numbers 2 and 4 represent midway progress between the specifi ed ranges.
SPIRITUAL MATURITY ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Remember that when assessing an individual, you base your evaluation on how that person measures up to the “stature of the fullness of Christ” for his/her age group. Christlikeness sets a high standard for assessment.
Individual scoringAfter completing the assessment, use the INDIVIDUAL Spiritual Maturity Scoring Inventoryto compile the results. For each assessment item, record the ranking from the 1 to 5 scale next to the corresponding item number on the INDIVIDUAL Spiritual Maturity Scoring Inventory. Add each column to obtain a subtotal for each spiritual maturity category. On the INDIVIDUALINDIVIDUALI Spiritual NDIVIDUAL Spiritual NDIVIDUALMaturity Progress Chart, plot each categoryʼs subtotal in the corresponding column. By doing so you will be able to get an overview of that personʼs strengths and challenges in his/her spiritual maturity development.
Group scoringOn the GROUP Spiritual Maturity Scoring Inventory, list the subtotals from individuals as recorded on the INDIVIDUALINDIVIDUALI Spiritual Maturity NDIVIDUAL Spiritual Maturity NDIVIDUALScoring Inventory under each corresponding category. Add the subtotals from the individuals and divide this sum by the number of individuals in the group. Repeat this procedure for each category to obtain a group average for each category. On the GROUP Spiritual Maturity Progress Chart,Maturity Progress Chart,Maturity plot the group averages in the corresponding columns. By doing so you will be able to get an overview of the groupʼs strengths and challenges in its spiritual maturity development.
