Introducing the new www.bchistory.ca BCHF Launches fresh new website
The British Columbia Historical Federation (BCHF) has relaunched its
website — bchistory.ca — with a brand new look and more readily‐
available information about the BCHF and its members.
Thanks go out to the Kootenay Internet Communications Society (KICS),
a volunteer service that hosted the website for many years. They have
discontinued their service. The new website is hosted by BC based
Unimaxx Networks. Thanks are also extended once again to Ron
Welwood and Alistair Fraser for their many years of work. At the
October 2015 BCHF Council Meeting Shannon Bettles agreed to be our
new web editor. She can be contacted through the website:
www.bchistory.ca/about‐the‐bchf/contact‐us/
The new website was designed in WordPress by Andrea Lister of
Absolutely Literate. The modern design allows the BCHF’s member
societies to be featured through an interactive map and a community
calendar. The design will allow, in time, for more collaboration between
the BCHF and its members. The website showcases BCHF events, awards,
advocacy and more.
Features on the new site include:
Optimization for all computer devices large and small
A dynamic front page
An interactive member society map
A news feeds to keep the website current
An in‐memoriam archive
An online store for subscriptions and back issue sales of British
Columbia History
Easily contact BCHF council members through Contact Us forms
Associate members can join and pay online
An events calendar
Nominate a website for recognition using online form
Updates to the website are ongoing. Future plans will be unveiled at the
2016 BCHF Annual Conference in Revelstoke, May 26–28, 2016.

The Arrow Lakes Historical
Society have produced two
DVDs. One is called Our
Coloured Past and contains
coloured slides, photos and
films covering from 1940s
through the 1970s. The other is
called ICHI100 and combines
Ichiro Shiinoʹs photos and 16
mm films. The DVDs sell for
$15. They are also in the
process of digitizing 500 hours
of taped interviews by Milton
Parent to be made available
through their website. These
valuable interviews are the
often the only recordings of
these early pioneers dating
back to 1971.

Council tours Chinatown The BCHF Council Fieldtrip and Meeting
Council enthusiastically embraced Judy Lam Maxwellʹs idea of going on
one of her Historical Chinatown Tours before the October 24th Council
meeting. Thanks to Judy, we had a great morning touring Chinatown,
then had lunch before convening in the Lim Sai Hor Kow Mock
Benevolent Association hall for our meeting. Many thanks to Orville D.
Lim, the president of this association, for his warm welcome. Orville
frankly shared his thoughts regarding the challenges that many of the
associations are facing in order to preserve their histories and historic
buildings. He said that as Vancouverʹs demographic has changed, so has
the struggle in caring for these heritage buildings.
Judy says that her ʺprimary goal is to make these tours mutually beneficial
to participants and the Chinatown community.ʺ She hopes to address
some of the current challenges in the area: ʺOur aim,ʺ she notes, ʺis to raise
money for restoration of heritage buildings, while educating participants
about a difficult past in a now‐revitalized neighbourhood. We also want to
take participants into various unique cultural and modern businesses to
bring attention to their value, products, and function in the community.ʺ
