Families from coast to coast enjoy thecharm and warmth of Western RedCedar. As a siding material, for decks, fences, arbors, and gazeboes, cedar isresistant to moisture, decay andinsects. Cedar provides unsurpasseddimensional stability and provides agreat substrate for many types oftoday’s stains and paints.

No “man-made,” product comesclose to cedar’s natural color andgrain, making cedar a great choiceto enhance both traditional andcontemporary home designs.

A hidden benefit of cedar is its uniquecell structure that traps pockets of airand boosts its insulation value and,in-turn, reduces the homeowner’sheating and cooling costs. Think ofit - a product that, with care, can lastforever, gains beauty over time, andreduces energy bills.

Lazy S Lumber and Columbia Cedaroffer a wide choice of siding designsand grades that will be just right forany home and budget. Each sidingstyle offers a variety of distinctivedecorative effects. Cedar makes ahome stand out, while increasing itsvalue and salability. Change thecolor, or leave it natural, cedarallows the choice.

Be sure to acclimate the siding beforeinstallation. The time required dependson your local humidity. Kiln-dried cedar needs seven to tendays to acclimate at the job site.

❶ Stack two boards of siding faceto face. ❷ Use scrap wood to getthe boards off the ground and sep-arate them allowing air to freelycirculate throughout the siding.

A professional siding installer cantell you about the many finishesavailable for cedar siding. WesternRed Cedar takes oil-based stainsbeautifully and may be applied witha light-tinted, transparent finish fora natural effect. A pigmented, semi-transparent finish produces a less-rustic look. Solid colors appliedover natural or “pre-primed” cedar, using a 100% acrylic latex paint, will create a smooth finish. Alkyd oilprimers with mildew and ultravioletshielding properties ensure the bestresults. Varnishes and other film-forming coatings may crack andpeel over time.

Pre-primed and factory-primed cedarwill reduce construction time by days, weeks, or even months. Look for a com-pany that seals all surfaces of the boardswith an alkyd oil-base prime coat, so thatthe siding is ready for installation andfinal finishing at the job site.

Factory-finished siding is machine-brushed, uniformly painted with a topcoat of acrylic latex, and applied to allexposed surfaces. This forms a seal thatkeeps out potential weather damage.Ask your building supply dealer about15-year warranty plans.

Factory finished or stained at thework site, cedar will give any homea look of distinction.

Tongue and groove siding can beinstalled horizontally or vertically. For horizontal applications, start at thebottom and work up with the groovededges facing downward. ❺ Siding up tosix inches wide should be toe-nailedthrough the base of each tongue toallow the groove of the next piece to slipover it. Do not drive nails straight in.For windy conditions, outdoor sidingshould be face-nailed using two nails.

Ceiling applications should benailed to joists at a maximum of 24”on center.

❹ Make sure nails penetrate 11/2” intosolid wood. For vertical applications, start at one corner with grooved edgetowards your left. Make sure that thefirst board is installed correctly byusing a vertical plumb line or a level. You may have to trim the grooved edgeof the first board to ensure a flush fit.Siding is nailed to horizontal blockinglines installed between studs or to fur-ring strips. Pieces up to six inches canbe blind-nailed while wider pieces, andwhere conditions are windy, should beface-nailed as described above .

Vertically applied channel siding,up to six inches wide, can be attachedwith one face-nail into furring strips orstuds. Wider siding or applications inwindy areas, should be face-nailed usingtwo nails. Make sure that the first boardis installed correctly by using a verticalplumb line or a level. ❹ You may haveto trim the edges of the first and lastboards to ensure a tight-flush fit andeven looking finish.

Start at one corner with the channeledge towards your right. ❺ Nail thesiding to horizontal blocking linesinstalled between studs or to furringstrips. See close-up detail. Make surenails penetrate 11/2” into solid woodand face-nail only. Fasteners shouldbe spread far enough apart betweeneach channel piece to allow them tocontract and expand independently;avoid nailing channels together.

For horizontal applications, use pattern105. Start at the bottom and work upwith the channel tongue facing upwardand nail as described above.

Proper wall construction and sidinginstallation are required to preventwater from seeping behind the sidinginto wall and roof spaces. Where theroof meets the siding and trim, alwaysuse flashing.

Flashing is meant to direct water awayfrom walls.

❷ Keep trim and siding a minimum of1” above the roof to avoid wicking.

❶ This photograph shows a metal roofmeeting the siding. Note that the metalroof is bent up to go behind the siding. For shingle roofing, the flashing goesbehind the siding to allow water todrain on top of the shingles.

Flash above doors and windows andwhere different building and finishingmaterials meet. Tilt flashing so waterdrains away from the wall. Do notcaulk where flashing and trim meet.Never use caulking in lieu of flashing.

For ground-floor skirtboards applica-tions, flash above the skirtboards andkeep the board off the ground at least6”. For second-floor applications, flash above and below windows andbandboards.

Flash fascia boards to prevent waterfrom getting underneath roofing shingles or behind soffits and fasciaboards.

NailsUse only hot-dipped galvanized, stainless steel, or aluminum nails, asrecommended by ASTM A 153. Thesenail types are resistant to corrosion andare compatible with Western Red Cedar.Other types of fasteners, like copper, cancause stains and streaks in the siding.Stainless steel nails are best. If the sidingis to be finished with a transparent orsemi-transparent stain, use No. 304stainless steel nails. For seacoast expo-sures, use No. 316 nails.

Nail Type, Size & SpacingSplitless siding nails have thin shanksand blunt points to reduce the risk ofsplitting the siding. For greater hold, nails with ring or spiral threaded shanksshould be used. Nails with texturedheads reduce any glossy appearancewhen finishing. ❶ Shows recom-mended nail types.

Nails should be driven with care. Heavynailing can distort the wood and maycause splitting. If a nail is counter sunk, fill hole with an outdoor putty that canbe stained or painted. To reduce split-ting, pre-drill holes at mitered corners, near edges, and at ends.

Appropriate nail size depends on the typeand thickness of the siding application.Use nails that are long enough to gothrough sheathing and insulation andpenetrate at least 11/2” into solid wood.❷ Indicates minimum nail lengths forfastening various thicknesses of cedarsiding over wood sheathing. Sidingmust always be nailed on studs.

Wall ConstructionWestern Red Cedar siding should only beinstalled properly on suitable framing.Housewrap or permeable building paperwill help insure that the siding has a long life.

Cedar siding must be nailed to framing, furring members, or to blocking betweenframing members. ❸ Shows lumbersizes and spacing for blocking andfurring strips.

Siding should be fastened to each studor furring strip with nails spaced at amaximum of 24” on center.

Nail placement depends on the sidingpattern and width. Fasten the sidingsecurely, allowing each piece to movein response to the moisture in the air. Avoid restricting the natural movementof each piece to prevent splitting.
