What is is VSC
IBM SmartCloud Virtual Storage Center is IBM’s entrance into the “storage hypervisor” market.

What’s a Storage hypervisor?
Server hypervisor has a well understood value connotation
– Pooled physical resources are consumed by virtual machines resulting in high asset utilization
– Virtual machines are mobile giving CIO’s their choice of physical server device
– A common set of value capabilities and centralized management are provided for virtual machines regardless of what physical server they are sitting on
– …cost savings and flexibility!
Storage hypervisor is a rapidly emerging way of describing the same value points in a storage context
On Intel systems server virtualization platform (VMware vSphere or Red Hat EV) andserver virtualization management (VMWare vCenter or Red Hat EV Manager)On Power systemsserver virtualization platform (IBM PowerVM) and server virtualization management (IBM Director VMControl)

Pooled Physical Resources
Value: Dramatically improve utilization of your physical storage assets
How? Pooled physical resources from virtually any disk array vendor or tier

Pooled Physical Resources
No more silos of disk.
Disk can be used freely
Can be used anywhere at any time regardless of vendor
Use your disk like they were meantt to be use
Avoid vendor lock in

Common Capabilities
Value: Deliver tier-1 service regardless of hardware choice
How? Common capabilities delivered by the storage hypervisor
– I/O caching, thin provisioning, automated tiering, application-integrated snapshot and mirroring, mobility-driven disruption avoidance
The desired service is delivered by the Storage hypervisor independent of the underlying hardware platform.
SLA (Service Level Agreement) is encapsulated with the data in a virtual volume.

Common Capabilities
EMC/HP and others: They CAN NOT Deliver tier-1 service regardless of hardware choice
They are limited to their own hardware
Common capabilities are NOT delivered like
– I/O caching NO
– thin provisioning NO
– automated tiering NO
– application-integrated snapshot and mirroring NO
– mobility-driven disruption avoidance NO
The desired service is delivered by the Storage hypervisor independent of the underlying hardware platform.
SLA (Service Level Agreement) is encapsulated with the data in a virtual volume.

Mobility
Value: Balance workload, manage lease termination, improve datacenter performance
How? Mobility of virtual volumes between any physical disk arrays– Move on the fly, snapshot or
mirror between arrays…
– …In a single physical datacenter or across two physical datacenters up to 300km apart

Mobility
We make HP and EMC hardware work better, faster and smarter
BECAUSE of virtual volumes between any physical disk arrays– Move on the fly, snapshot or
mirror between array and VENDORS
– Move from one vendor to another. NOT JUST IBM

Centralized Management
Optimize your people
NOT just someone for EMC/HP. One person with one skill set can do it all
Centralized management of all vendors hardware and storage services
– Visualization, health, capacity, performance
– Storage services catalog, automated provisioning, pay-per-use

Conclusion: what IBM believes…
The industry conversation around storage hypervisors is accelerating to a point that taking a strategic position on virtualizing the storage infrastructure is high on the CIO radar (just as virtualizing the server infrastructure was several years ago).
Storage hypervisors have the potential to shift the value conversation around storage from array hardware to hypervisor software, fundamentally changing the way CIO’s acquire and pay for storage resources.
It is probable that, in an accelerated storage hypervisor market conversation, IBM has the most complete / competitive offering by a good margin.
IBM’s software solution can run on a variety of widely scalable hardware platforms making it applicable to smalI businesses and large enterprises alike.
