INTRODUCTIONThe PGA Professional Golf Management Level 1 Introduction to Teaching and Golf Club Performance course provides a framework to help aspiring golf professionals understand how to teach the game to beginning golfers, including juniors. This framework includes information about various teaching strategies, how students learn, how the body produces a golf swing, and how a student’s golf equipment can affect his or her performance, both positively and negatively.

The Introduction to Teaching and Golf Club Performance seminar is designed to provide a forum in which to apply knowledge of golf instruction and equipment in conjunction with PGA PGM faculty and PGA PGM participants. PGA PGM faculty will also review the requirements for completing the work experience activities and the knowledge test.

SKILL PRACTICE

The seminar presents opportunities to practice and reinforce the concepts presented in the pre-seminar. Led by PGM faculty, seminar activities will demonstrate how to apply knowledge of how people learn, teaching concepts and strategies, and understanding of the golf swing and golf equipment. You will participate with other PGA PGM apprentices and college students in group activities that require you to assess and react to common situations that occur in golf lessons. PGA PGM faculty will also review the requirements for completing the work experience activities and the knowledge test.

ACTIVITY 1: LEARNING A PHYSICAL SKILL

This activity is a demonstration of what a beginning student experiences in the cognitive phase of the learning process. You will try to learn a new movement skill, where you raise your fingers off of a flat surface in a prescribed pattern.

Begin the activity by laying your dominant hand (right for right-handed people, left for left-handed people) flat on your desk, with your fingers spread out.

Next, lift your index and ring fingers off of the desk while keeping your thumb and other fingers flat on the desk, and then lower your fingers back to the desk.

Following this, lift your middle and little fingers off of the desk while keeping your thumb and other fingers flat on the desk, and then lower your fingers back to the desk.

After you successfully perform each movement a few times, repeat the sequence as quickly and accurately as possible.

ACTIVITY 2: SHORT-TERM MEMORY TEST

This activity demonstrates the amount of information that the average person can store in short-term memory (STM). The teacher will show you a slide that contains 27 letters, arranged in a 9x3 grid. After a short period of time, the teacher will take the slide away. Try to remember as many of the letters you can, as well as the row and column where they appeared.

Five seconds after the teacher removed the slide, write down as many letters as you can remember, in the row and column where they appeared.

ACTIVITY 3: SKILL ASSESSMENTS

In this activity, you will discuss the use of various measurement tools used to assess the skill and proficiency level of golf students.

PART 1

After an overview of commonly used assessment tools, you will discuss these tools with your group members and answer the following questions.

1. Do you have any first-hand experience with any assessment tools, either as a teacher gauging a student’s skills or having your own skills assessed?

2. Do any positive or negative factors stand out from your experience?

Following the discussion, the teacher will discuss one assessment tool currently used by the PGA: the Performance Analysis Record (PAR) forms. A sample PAR scorecard and instructions for using the scorecard are presented on the following page.

PART 2

After completing the PowerPoint portion of the activity, you will move to the short game assessment area, where you will participate in a putting activity using a PAR scorecard, including an evaluation of your scorecard.

Read the following putting directions, and mark the putting section on the given portion of the PAR scorecard. The instructor will moderate a discussion of the results.

ACTIVITY 4: MAKING INITIAL PHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS

The understanding of bones, joints, muscles, and movement patterns should allow you to initially observe your students for the purpose of predicting what their swinging motions will look like. Your predictions will serve as the basis for your notions of any swing faults that the students may exhibit when they swing the golf club.

During the activity, two or three volunteers from the class will approach the front of the classroom. As the volunteers move, observe them, and mark the following table according to what you see.

CLUB PERFORMANCE ACTIVITY



ACTIVITY 7: EVALUATING GOLF CLUB PERFORMANCE

The purpose of this activity is to isolate golf club performance characteristics to determine objective results and gather subjective feedback following each shot.

For this activity, you will be divided into groups of three students. One of you will act as the “Player,” another as the “Golf Professional,” and the third as the “Recorder.”

You will be given a number of sets of golf clubs. Each club in each set is identical to the others in the set except for one performance specification. This will allow you to isolate one performance specification in order to observe the effect it has on a golf swing. For example, in order to isolate the lie angle performance specification, all club specifications would be identical except lie angle, and the lie angles would be 56, 60, and 64 degrees.

For this activity, you will be divided into groups of three students. One of you will act as the “Player,” another as the “Golf Professional,” and the third as the “Recorder.” The “Player” will strike golf balls with each club in the set. The “Golf Professional” is responsible for giving new clubs to the “Player” and asking appropriate questions in order to coax subjective feedback out of the “Player.” The “Recorder” will note the objective and subjective feedback stemming from the golf shot on the worksheet, which begins on the following page.

The objective feedback is what can be directly observed about the golfer and/or the flight of the ball (for example, the degree to which the “Player” looks comfortable or uncomfortable during the swing). The subjective feedback consists of the remarks or comments made by the “Player” about the most recent shot.

The “Golf Professional” must keep the activity moving at a quick pace, so the “Player” does not have enough time to get used to the club and change his or her swing in compensation for the different specifications.

Repeat this process for every club in every set of clubs until all performance variables have been tested.

Remember that each performance specification has an effect on other characteristics. For example, the club length affects the lie angle.

Note that this activity is simply an observance of the golf club’s performance characteristics and their effect on ball flight and player performance. Accurate test results are not necessarily evident until all of the characteristics have been recorded and studied.

After all of the data has been gathered, discuss the equipment changes that could be made (based on the data) to improve ball flight.

Congratulations on completing the seminar for this course. After you have finished all of the Level 1 seminars, you will engage in a series of work experience activities, which will allow you to apply knowledge and skills learned in each course to on-the-job situations at the facility where you work or intern. These activities must be recorded and detailed in your work experience portfolio, which can be downloaded from the PGA Knowledge Center at PGALinks.

PREPARING FOR THE KNOWLEDGE TEST

After you complete the work experience activities, you will be required to pass a knowledge test with questions based on the material covered in this pre-seminar course manual and the content covered in the seminar. The knowledge test will consist of true/false and multiple-choice questions similar to the ones in the self-checks in this course. The test will have a time limit, so having a firm understanding of the course material will be essential for finishing in the allotted time.

Test questions related to this course will be designed to test your knowledge of the various components of customer relations.
