Intro Greeting This is my story about how cars changed in order to help save the environment. Hope you like it. Intro 1 st automobile was invented in 1807 in Philadelphia. By a person named Oliver Evans. Called the Orukter Amphibolos. 1 st amphibious vehicle and automobile. Intro Powered by high-pressure steam. Generated a lot of power for that time. Drove both on land and it water. Used for cleaning the waterways of the city. In those days there was still trading by ships and the waterways needed to be kept clean and safe from floating junk and garbage. Intro Important because this was the beginning of the auto industry. We will see how automobiles have changed overtime. I will show you how cars have changed. They changed to help save the environment. 1 st Hybrid In the year 1900 Ferdinand Porsche created the first working hybrid Car. Hybrid meaning it used electricity and gasoline. 1 st Hybrid Its amazing that the car still runs today. Porsche used some pretty cool technology to make this happen. The car had a battery and an engine to keep the car moving. 1 st Hybrid He used electric motors and batteries to power the wheels that made the car move forward. When the batteries were low he would power up the engine that would move the car forward and recharge the batteries. Once the batteries were charged the car would go into electric mode. This was pretty amazing for that time. Through the Years Things changed. For 70 years gas stayed about the same then the price just went up. Even though we had the technology people still preferred gas engines. People still liked the fact that gas engines produced more power. Gas engine cars usually traveled faster. In those times 40mph was fast and cars only got bigger and yet faster. Also, gas was very cheap as you can see with this graph. Why Gas? Gas was cheap at the time. We had a lot of gas that we could buy and use. Gas cars became bigger. Gas cars became more powerful. Gas cars became faster. Bigger engines use up more gas. More gas more pollution. Remember, gas was not that expensive back then. Looking forward Let me show you how some of the cars have changed over the years. Even though we had the technology to help protect the environment already people wanted something else. People during the years changed as culture changed. The culture pretty much determined what cars we drove. The culture determined when we decided to try hybrid cars once again many years later. One of the most popular American cars was the Ford Model T. Used in the years Used a gasoline engine. Nice features, simple well built car. 1920s Cars got bigger, faster and got a bit fancy looking too. Here is an ultra fancy and powerful Rolls Royce. 1920s Here is popular model from Dodge. The choice was yours. If you could afford the car you pretty much bought it. Cars were to be considered status symbols almost like today. Usually people who had a lot of money could afford a Rolls Royce. If you could afford something like a Dodge you were still pretty cool back them. 1930s This car is just huge. Had a huge engine. Used a lot of gas. More gas used meant more pollution. 1930s Larger was definitely not boring. Cars were developing a sort of style and look now. Almost like people today who buy and shop for things to be stylish. 1930s These cars were very stylish and curvy as you can see. Imagine driving around in a car like this? People will still say wow when they see something like this on the road. 1930s People wanted colors. People wanted more stylish cars. Did not matter how much gas or pollution these cars actually made. But, they sure were pretty machines back then and for some people they are very valued and collected today. 1940s This one was a convertible with shiny white wall tires. White tires on car? Thats what people wanted and thats what people got from car makers. 1940s Another example of a huge car. A big car using up a lot of gas creating a lot of pollution. 1940s Big boxy and yet some were still curvy and fancy. This one had tiny windows. 1940s This car could have been a typical family car. Also, this was the average size automobile. There were a lot of big cars driving around back then. 1950s In this time there were a lot of thing happening culturally. Cars really changed their looks. However, still the cars still were big. Engines were getting bigger and more powerful. 1950s People did not mind this at all. Cars were getting a bit flatter too due to how engines became more advanced. Here we have a pink car with fins in the back to make it more stylish yet. 1950s Look at this car. Very big and bold. Very bright and yellow. This car had style. Big engines, they made a lot of vroom vroom. They also generated a lot of pollution. 1950s Big cars. The styles and colors were limitless. Gas was still cheap. Sadly the environment was not on peoples mind back then when it came to cars. 1960s During this time cars continued to be stylish. However the focus or trend was power. Even though this care looks a bit smaller it was a powerful and fast car. More power. More status. More pollution. 1960s Powerful cars that looked sometimes like rocket ships. It was popular to show off how much power or muscle you had by sometime racing people in regular streets. 1960s These cars were all about muscle and power. They say people has the need for speed. Faster, louder and stronger. These care really vroom vroomed down the street. 1960s So here we are 60 years later. Cars of all sizes with fast big powerful gas burning engines. Pollution was very high. People were happy and stylish with these what people called sometimes super machines. 1970s What happened? This car looks so different now. Times have changed during this time. 1970s Big problem. Gas in America was running out. Prices went up a lot From less than.50 cents to almost $1.40 in about 10 years time. Thats a lot. People had to sell their cars because they could not afford it no more. People were not buying big cars anymore. They needed something cheaper and more affordable now. In other countries most people drove small cars. In japan for example like this Honda. 1970s We needed these smaller cars from other countries right away. Some were still stylish still but now tiny. They used less gas and polluted less than the big cars people liked to drive. This was something that needed to happen in order to keep people driving and going to work so they can make a living. Smaller cars helped people save gas and money. 1970s Cars like this continued to be popular. Notice that some of them started to lose their curviness or muscle look to them. Fancy cars cost money that people were struggling with during those years. Now it was about getting to work with whatever you can afford and sometimes pretty cars or ugly cars did not matter. 1970s Looking at this picture you see the old car in the back. Small and it used less fuel. However, even though it made less pollution that the big cars of the past we still had a lot of pollution during those times. People however never forget the love they had for style. As you can see with the car up front. Its a whole different car with a different engine yet it has the look older people loved and younger people are starting to like. This is what young people are calling retro Retro seems to be very popular nowadays. 1980s-now A lot change happened during this period. Cars changed a lot and people changed a lot. Styles and trends and what you can afford still determined what you drove. However, pollution levels did not change much. We had a lot of people now driving a lot of cars creating a lot of pollution. Gas prices were going up every year. Things need to change to protect the future. 1980s-now During those years we did all we could to make things better even if it meant buying less expensive smaller cars from other countries. People started to care more about saving the environment. People and technology started to change to help with this cause especially with cars we finally saw change. The hybrids are comingonce again. 1997 This was when Toyota revealed the Prius. In the year 2001 the whole world was able to buy it. To most was not a very pretty or stylish car. But is was as stylish as possible. This car was about saving a lot of gas. This car was about driving far with a little bit of gas and once again utilizing the idea and invention that was created 100 years ago. 2001 Both Toyota and Honda like this one started the revolution of inventing and creating the future cars that will help lower pollution and help protect the planet we live in. As I mentioned the culture in general has changed with cars and we all want to drive nice cars that still save the planet. The future looks pretty good in terms of hybrid cars. How they work? Hybrid technology works by combining battery or electric power and gasoline power to move the car. When the car is driving slow and around town it used electric energy from the batteries to move the car. Creating no pollution. When driving on the highway the car used the gas engine. The battery charges itself when the car brakes and when the car is moving using the gas engine while the tires move and spin. The idea is most people are not on the highway all the time so you will using more battery than gas power. As a result, less gas less pollution. Check out this short video. How they work? Short video playback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2qvGJ wTuBo Now and the future Hybrid cars are here to stay. They do help the environment however even today there still people who still decide and prefer gas cars. As I mentioned people drive what they can afford. People who want to be stylish drive expensive cars that use a lot a gas too. You still have a choice an its a matter of culture too. Here are some of my favorite cars. Favorites Nice hybrid here Cadillac ELR Pricey but the future is here. Favorites Very stylish indeed BMW i8 Favorites We even have all electric cars now that use no gas what so ever. Here is my favorite all electric. An all electric car the called Tesla-S. Yesall electric. Fast and stylish. All time Favorite Very expensivea hybrid super car.
