One of the key tenets of American transcendentalism is self-reliance. That is we only have ourselves to depend on, and we must prepare and test ourselves in order to achieve independence. This applies to both mental and physical abilities. We must do what we can to keep our bodies and minds physically fit and agile in order to survive and succeed in the varying situations life will put us in.

A perfect example is the situation of a class test or exam. Prior to such a test or exam, you study, read and work to understand the subject matter that you will be tested on because you know that during the test you will have to be self-reliant, you will not be able to depend on anyone but yourself.

While tests are announced, many situations we encounter on a daily basis are not. Therefore it is important to keep your mind in shape so that no matter what comes, you will be able to react with the utmost agility and success.

One way to keep your mind nimble and quick is of course reading, but another way is to constantly exercise and challenge your brain with puzzles, hypothetical challenges.

While this booklet (keeping in the theme of “Into the Wild”) was created as a task for EnglishCaddy's annual English Challenge But, it was also no less created in the hopes of introducing you to the necessity of regularly exercising your brain and encouraging your to nurture your self-reliance.
