• Social Media plays key role in casual relationships turning into serious ones

• Social Media, less vulnerable than face-to-face communication

• Give people chance to introduce themselves to people they don’t know well

• Example • Male in Chicago stated that instead of making a phone call, he will “Facebook stalk”

to learn more

• Facebook relationship status now makes relationships official

Breaking Up

• Social Media good for starting relationship, not good for ending

• Teens interviewed acknowledged that breaking up over social media is disrespectful

• Facebook pages begin to slowly change when couples going through troubles (Ex: Michael p.134)

• Despite what teens say breakups take place online (Ex: old pictures deleted, angry status updates, removal of ex as a friend)

Over, but not really

• Even when relationship is over usually ex’s have mutual social media friends

• Ex’s can still see status updates and messages sent

• These communications can be caring, respectful, hurtful, or angry

• The book uses Bob from Northern California as an example

• You monitor your ex, check Facebook statuses, see who’s writing on their wall, and if the relationship status changes

Privacy from Others

• Teens agreed that communication privacy from parents is important

• Social Media can give them this

• The book uses Joan as an example

• Her and her boyfriend would talk on the phone and IM at the same time, so their parents could not hear everything

• Teens have ability to be in relationships that parents may not approve of

Boundaries

• Anything from • Researching potential love

interests

• Using a shared password to check one’s significant other

• Restrict significant others contact with their friends

• Check significant others wall to see who writes on it

• Example • Gabriela a 15 year old from

LA always logs into her boyfriends

Vulnerability

• New media increases teens vulnerability and control over emotional exposure

• This could lead to them being victimized by friends and others

• Media can also be a good thing

• Leaving a message on Facebook can be more comfortable than calling a girl and stumbling over words

• Easier to flirt digitally than in person

• Predators • What parents worry about

most • Be careful of groups you join

and individuals you talk with
